Kolchak: The Night Stalker is an American television series that aired on ABC during the 1974 – 1975 season. Kolchak: The Night Stalker was created by Jeff Rice. It featured a fictional Chicago newspaper reporter – Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin – who investigated mysterious crimes with unlikely causes, particularly those that law enforcement authorities would not follow up. These often involved the supernatural or science fiction, including fantastic creatures. The series was preceded by two television movies, The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973). Although the series lasted only a single season, it garnered a world-wide fan following and is considered a cult classic in horror television. Subsequent novels and comic books later followed. And it later influenced the creation of the X-Files, which is in the same vein as Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
In 2002, Moonstone began publishing Prestige Format one-shots that pick up where the television show left off in 1975. Moonstone continues the creepy horror anthology that is: “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” in various comic book related projects. Cue the “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” intro theme music and be prepared to get totally spooked out…
And Now, Moonstone Presents, “Kolchak: The Night Stalker and Dr. Moreau”. The title says it all as Kolchak finds himself surrounded by creepy parts and pieces of science gone wrong! Is this what it seems like? Could it be reality, when it really started as fantasy from the past? LA reporter Carl Kolchak is back on home turf, wrapping up work on another story. But before he can get back on a plane to LA, there are some gruesome murders with a strange twist. They seem to be the work of some kind of powerful and mysterious beasts. HG Wells’ Doctor Moreau seems to have modern counterparts busy in the animal research labs of greater Chicagoland. And their creatures have run the proverbial “amok.”
Presented in Glorious Black & White.
Stories/Contents:
In Kolchak the Night Stalker – “Dr. Moreau”, After missing his flight connection back to L.A., Kolchak is forced to return by road; en route he learns of a gruesome attack in Winnetka, Illinois, at the home of Doctor Eloise Lochley, and decides to investigate. At the crime scene Carl meets an old colleague, Chief Detective Irene Lamont, who allows him to join her team as they search the house full of animal tracks and human bones picked clean. When Doctor Lochley arrives to find her home in turmoil, Kolchak questions her and learns that her son, Eli, recently disappeared; Eli was a member of ‘Animals are People Too’, an activist group that has been causing trouble in the area. As Kolchak continues to work the case, the military receive a tip off and mount a raid on the headquarters of APT; however, as they approach the group’s farmhouse, they are cut down one by one by a pack of vicious animal-human hybrids. Lamont, Kolchak and a squad of police pay Doctor Lochley a visit and find her sharing her home with another pack of hybrid creatures, descendants of a human-animal experiment by a real-life Doctor Moreau from over a century ago. Lochley reveals that the hybrids were dying out until she introduced prehistoric cells into their DNA – cells taken from ice samples that Kolchak remembers only too well, from a previous case involving killer ape-men. The doctor also tells Kolchak and Lamont that she injected Eli with the DNA too, to prevent her son dying from Alzheimer’s… Meanwhile, the other pack goes on the offensive: using weapons taken from the soldiers, they begin attacking random humans, and then devouring their prey…
