The Shadow Kingdom was written sometime by Howard in the 1920’s but saw publication in Weird Tales in 1929. Finding himself king of Valusia, Kull negotiates his barbaric legitimacy on the throne. One of the Atlantean blood enemies are the Picts and despite the Pictish ambassador challenging Kull to combat and disrespecting the throne, they detail Kull with a hunky bodyguard named Brule. Brule, identified by his bare chest and gold armlet, discover a plot by the Snakemen, an ancient race of shapeshifting monsters, to assassinate Kull and assume power. How will King Kull handle this threat in the comic adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s epic?

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Iron Fortress”, More comfortable with a sword than a scepter, Kull has recently crowned himself king and seeks to unite the once-proud and powerful land of Valusia. Only Count Areyas stands between Kull and a reunified kingdom-and the obstinate Count waits patiently in his Iron Fortress, the land’s oldest and most formidable castle. Horrors lurk in the shadows of Kull’s newly won throne, and slithering foes stalk his every move.

Features variant of issue #1B featuring “King Kull” cover art by comics’ legend Joe Kubert.

Next in issue #2, “The Shadow Kingdom”, Before the blood from his last battle has a chance to soak into Valusian soil, Kull faces new threats to his throne. As representatives from all corners of his kingdom seek his counsel, the new warrior-king accepts a strange invitation from a hotheaded Pict emissary. Kull will need to discard ancient prejudices and find allies in former foes if he’s to save the newly united Valusian empire from a clandestine enemy that once threatened to enslave and exterminate mankind!

Next in issue #3, “The Shadow Kingdom, Part 2″, With Pict leader Ka-Nu’s ominous warning still ringing in his ears, Kull must confront a more immediate crisis-the wrath of his first wife, the Lady Igraine, whose venomous tongue threatens the validity of his claim to the throne. If that weren’t enough, Kull must still meet with Brule, the formidable-yet-contentious Pict warrior whose insights will lead to a horrific revelation.

Next in issue #4, “The Shadow Kingdom, Part Three”, Kull and Brule uncover further layers of deception and treachery in the ancient halls of Valusia’s Tower of Splendor. Over the centuries, the human race has become confident of its complete dominance over the natural and supernatural realms. Using humanity’s own arrogance and indolence against itself, a shadowy race of snake creatures has returned to nearly full strength-and is poised to take over Valusia as a first step in toppling man’s soft civilization! Kull, the newly crowned warrior-king, and Brule, a Pict emissary, are all that stand between the snake-men and the decimation of the Seven Empires. Ancient rivalries are put aside as Kull and Brule fight for their lives, their people, and their very souls!

Next in issue #5, “The Eye of Terror, Part One”, Still recovering from last issue’s surprise battle, King Kull is on edge and eager to find the snake-men who may still be hidden in his court and throughout Valusia’s City of Wonders. The Great Serpent cult is far from defeated, and their reach is long. With one treaty falling apart, a powerful ally in danger, and his trusted friend, Brule, doubting his latest commands, Kull must plan his next move carefully-and now constantly watch his back for traitors!

Finally in issue #6, “The Eye of Terror, Part Two”, At odds with a dangerous Valusian cult, Kull attempts to use guile and diplomacy-instead of brute force-in an attempt to save Pict leader Ka-nu’s life and crush the devious Serpent Cult’s schemes. Another Pict ally, the headstrong, stealthy Brule, infiltrates the Tower of the Great Serpent against Kull’s wishes. Brule is on an assassination mission of his own making, and stealing a powerful, sought-after gem from the stronghold would be an added bonus-and would bring the wrath of the vicious, shape-changing snake-men to Kull’s front door!
