Frank Frazetta was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers, the animated film “Fire and Ice”, and other media. He is often referred to as the “Godfather of fantasy art”, and one of the most renowned illustrators of the 20th century. He was also the subject of a 2003 documentary Painting with Fire. Frank Frazetta was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was awarded a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention. Frank Frazetta’s work in comics and animation has won him world-wide recognition and a “cult” fan following. Of which I am one.

Legacy: Selected Painting & Drawings by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art – Frank Frazetta published by Underwood Books in 1999 is the amazing sequel to the best-selling “Icon: A Retrospective by Frank Frazetta”. Legacy: Selected Paintings and Drawings reproduces works of Frazetta’s book covers, magazines, and comic books, also included are works from his movie posters and comedy album covers. Characters such as Conan, King Kong, Dracula, Tarzan, and others from pop culture are presented in all of thier glory. Frazetta’s art captivates and intrigues the viewer’s mind with works that are haunting, even melancholy, while others are dynamic and action-packed. A sorcerer summoning a demon, a scuba diver facing a sea monster, and of course, voluptuous maidens are just a few examples of the great works to be found in this book. Additionally, alternate versions of the same commission are presented. Art is accompanied by the artist’s own observations and commentary by a number of his contemporaries. “Legacy” continues the comprehensive look at Frank Frazetta’s artwork that begun in “Icon” in 1998. Lavish full-color presentation on deluxe art paper showcases reproductions of more than a 100 of his most famous works, as well as uncollected and previously unpublished paintings and drawings. Numerous drawings, photographs & roughs, plus a special comics section w/ many Frazetta rare covers plus an 8 page romance story published in full for the first time in 46 years. Towards the end of the book, the paintings are given larger print space, to exemplify their awesomeness, each with the story behind the creation. Also features a foreword by Danton Burroughs, an introduction by Nick Meglin, an illustrated biography by Arnie Fenner, a special “Appreciation” by Michael Friedlander and illustrated {Fire & Ice} endpapers.
