Now, Marvel Comics Presents, the bad guys are back, in force, in this follow-up to the Deadly Foes of Spider-Man limited series. It begins with the imprisoned Otto Octavius forced to sit helplessly by as government agents destroy the mechanical arms that had once made him Doctor Octopus. Octavius still shares a bond with the arms, however, and he feels their destruction even though he is physically some 2,000 miles away from them when they are destroyed. Then, someone, or something, contacts Octavius over the same psychic link that had once connected him to his arms. It turns out that the criminal once known as the Answer has regained an incorporeal awareness after his apparent disintegration in Spectacular Spider-Man #96. Now he seeks Octavius’ help in recovering his physical form. Meanwhile, the Vulture, the Rhino, Boomerang, and Hardshell have rejoined forces…all in order to gain revenge on the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Deadly Reunion”, Return of the Sinister Syndicate! The band is getting back together! The Rhino, Vulture, Boomerang, and Hardshell (aka Leila Davis) join forces again to steal the nuclear blaster from the U.S. Atomic Research Company in Yonkers! Ironically, the Daily Bugle’s ace photographer happens to be at the same research company taking pictures for a photo essay about Otto Octavius! When the quartet of villains breaks into the laboratory, the wondrous wall-crawler leaps into action! Four against one! Tough odds for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Meanwhile in Colorado, Doctor Octopus conspires with the Answer to escape from the Vault!
Next in issue #2, “Hate is a Many Splendored Thing”, Thanks to a stray blast from the stolen nuclear blaster…Stegron the Dinosaur Man walks the Earth again! And the long-lost creature makes a beeline for the Museum of Natural History to visit his fossilized relatives! But that’s where the web-slinger knew he would go! Spider-Man and Stegron throw down Jurassic-style…until the Beetle intervenes! While elsewhere Hardshell tries to find a buyer for the nuclear blaster! And at the Vault, Doc Ock and the Answer break out!
Next in issue #3, “Power Struggle”, The bad guys are crawling out of the woodwork to get their hands on the nuclear blaster! Inside a Queens warehouse, a captive web-slinger looks on as the Beetle and Stegron battle Hardshell, Boomerang, the Rhino, and the Vulture for possession of the blaster! When the fight spills into the streets, Dr. Octopus and the Answer join the fray! And then two more lethal foes arrive on the scene! A new one called Strikeback…and an old one known as Swarm! Maybe Spidey should just sit this one out!
Finally in issue #4, “Re-Disunited”, On the grounds of Empire State University, no less than ten super-villains and one web-slinger clash for ownership of the nuclear blaster! Spider-Man vs. Swarm! Hardshell vs. the Beetle! The Rhino vs. the Vulture! Doc Ock vs. the Answer! Strikeback vs. Stegron and Boomerang! Oh my, these battles could go on for a long time! But a breakthrough finally occurs when Hardshell realizes that Strikeback is her long-lost husband! When the two start working together, the lethal foes start falling one by one…until only the Amazing Spider-Man is left! Can the wondrous wall-crawler slip past Hardshell, recover the blaster, and bring this crazy adventure to a close?
