Written by Dark Horse President and Publisher Mike Richardson, Living with the Dead is a zombie story with elements of “I am Legend” (1954) thrown in for good measure. Like the protagonist in “I am Legend”, the guy (make that guys) in this comic book live in a post-apocalyptic world populated largely by gruesome creatures. To blend in with the zombie crowd and keep from being eaten, the 20-something duo wear zombie masks, and readers get a mask of their own via a zombie survival kits centerfold. The kit also contains a straightforward chicken á la king recipe. Visually, Ben Stenbeck’s interior work nicely complements Richard Corben’s cover, most notably Stenbeck’s creature designs and distinctive facial expression renderings.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Two survivors of a global catastrophe disguise themselves as corpses to survive in a land of the walking dead. Straw and Whip are these survivors; two slackers who have lived through a plague that’s left the world with seven billion brain-hungry zombies. Life is tough as they try to keep up the appearance of being like the rest of the decomposing masses, and things heat up when a damsel in distress needs their help. Will they blow their cover for a beautiful young girl, or sacrifice her?

Next in issue #2, A global virus has turned the seven billion inhabitants of Earth into mindless brain-and-flesh-hungry zombies. Best friends Straw and Whip have been able to survive in this savage land by disguising themselves as zombies, but now they feel the flames of jealousy over what – in all likelihood – is the last living woman on Earth. Will Betty’s feminine charm divide Straw and Whip? Will her penchant for playing zombie target practice prove a fatal fetish?

Finally in issue #3, Straw and Whip have done just fine on their own, but now their new friend Betty is posed to be their Yoko Ono. In the final act, Straw narrowly escapes a zombie attack to find Whip making his famous ‘boeuf bourguignonne’ for Betty. But when zombies break into their home, will their disguises hold, or will one of these hard rockers fall victim to the flesh-hungry masses?
