Logan’s Run Comics Lot
Marvel Comics 1977 Complete Series
An Official Comic Adaptation of the 1976 MGM Production
Logan’s Run is a 1976 American science fiction film, directed by Michael Anderson and starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Farrah Fawcett, and Peter Ustinov. The screenplay by David Zelag Goodman is based on the book Logan’s Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. It depicts a utopian future society on the surface, revealed as a dystopia where the population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by killing everyone who reaches the age of 30. The story follows the actions of Logan 5, a “Sandman” who has terminated others who have attempted to escape death, and is now faced with termination himself. Everyone must die at a set age and that Logan runs off with a female companion named Jessica, while being chased by another Sandman named Francis.
Logan’s Run is notable for both its dynamic adaptation of the stunning science-fiction movie and for a little-noticed backup story in issue #6, the first solo story for the now-infamous galactic powerhouse Thanos.
In the world of Logan’s Run, mankind has decided that in order to support the growing population, it was necessary to limit the time that people are allowed to live. A crystal life-clock is now placed in the palms of all newborns. It glows yellow for the first ten years of life, then blue for a decade, then red. At the age of 31, you are required to die. Of course, some people do not submit so easily—they run. That’s where the Sandmen come in: they track down the “runners” and terminate them. But some runners have spoken of a place called “Sanctuary” where you can live and grow old. Logan-6 is assigned to become a runner and find Sanctuary—and then destroy it.
Writer: Gerry Conway
Artists: George Perez w/ Klaus Janson & Marie Severin
Cover by: Gil Kane & Al Milgrom
In “Logan’s Run”, Welcome to the 23rd century, where life is perfect. There’s just one catch. At birth everyone is implanted with a life jewel in their palm. When they reach the age of thirty, the jewel informs them they must report for termination. Not everyone accepts this however. Some choose to run. That’s where Logan comes in. Logan is a Sandman, charged with terminating those who do not submit willingly. Everything changes when Logan meets Jessica and learns the secret of the Ankh she wears. This leads him to be assigned to find Sanctuary, the destination of all runners. To accomplish this task, he must become a runner himself.
