Description

Lycanthrope Leo                                   Comics Lot
Viz Comics 1994 Complete Series
English Adaptation by: Fred Burke & Toshifumi Yoshida
Writer: Kengo Kaji
Artist: Kenji Okamura
All Covers by: Kenji Okamura

On Leo Takizawa’s 17th birthday, his father said he would take Leo to visit his mother’s final resting place. But the pair did not go to the Takizawa family grave. Instead Leo’s father took him to an abandoned house where he learned the truth about who his parents were and the source of the powers awakening within him. It was revealed that Leo’s father was not in fact his true father at all. Indeed, he was a lycanthrope (werewolf) hunter who took pity on him after he had killed Leo’s mother. He had hoped to raise Leo ignorant of his heritage and power. In the end, tragedy struck. Leo ended up killing the hunter in an attempt to defend himself. Now Leo is afraid, unsure of who is friend and who is foe. How long can he stay alive carrying the burden of his heritage?

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Awakening”, Lycanthrope Leo is a dark fantasy set in modern day Japan which tells the tale of a secret race of lycanthropes who live among us. A group knows as the Hunters persecutes the lycanthropes out of fear, while interior divisions between carnivorous and herbivorous lycanthropes split their unity even further.

Next in issue #2, “The Game Begins”, Leo struggles with the reality and paranoia of being a werewolf while at school. Unbeknownst to Leo, a werewolf hunter has discovered his whereabouts and makes his plans. Throughout his school day, Leo continues to wrestles with feeling of guilt over his father’s death and experiences anxiety attacks even coming to a point of triggering his werewolf transformation. But he gets in control of himself. The werewolf hunter soon shows up at the school and Leo is quickly put on the defensive as the werewolf hunter hunts Leo down throughout the school. Thus “The Game Begins”, a game of cat and mouse, of predator and prey… of werewolf hunter and werewolf!

Next in issue #3, “Savannah”, Leo’s confrontation with Okure, the biology teacher/hunter, comes to its inevitable conclusion as the leonine lycanthrope is aided by a mysterious voice in his head — Kyoko pulls Leo back from the brink of a killing frenzy! Also: A beautiful new teacher comes to Leo’s school, and begins to show a little too much interest in her students.

Next in issue #4, “The Protectorate”, The secret of Leo’s new teacher, Mayuko Asuka, is finally revealed! Is she really an ally (as she claims), or is this just another attempt by the Hunters to kill Leo?

Next in issue #5, “The Will of the Beast”, Leo and Kyoko are attacked by Iwamoto and his gang while on the way home from school! Does he dare reveal his hidden powers?

Next in issue #6, “The Mountain Dwellers”, After his meeting with Tagami, Leo begins attending his school’s martial arts club more and more in an attempt to learn more not only about the mysterious ‘Blood Tribe of the Beast,’ but about his own powers, as well. And what is the real reason behind Mayumi Asuka’s invitation to Leo to come visit her?

Finally in issue #7, “Collision Course”, Called out in the middle of the night, Leo is drugged by Miss Asuka. When attacked by her beast-form, Leo transforms as well…but because of the drug, Leo loses control and only the stalwart Takizawa can save him from himself. Can a water buffalo stop an angry lion? Find out in the final issue!
