When the super-undead stumble into the MU from the Man-Thing’s Nexus of All Realities, all of Florida is quarantined against the zombie plague. Time is quickly running out for a cure, so the Initiative sends a most unlikely group of heroes into the Zombieverse on a desperate mission to find the one item they need before the whole MU is consumed! The scream team of Fred Van Lente (Incredible Hercules) and Kev Walker (Annihilation: Nova) unite for a Marvel Zombies story like you’ve never seen before!
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, Zombies invade Earth-616, the original Marvel Universe, by entering through the Nexus of Realities in Florida. Siege, Jennifer Kale, Wundarr and the Conquistador, local members of the Fifty-State Initiative, investigate but are attacked by Zombie Deadpool and a few zombified civilians. The zombies kill the Conquistador, and infect Siege and Wundarr. A horrified Kale destroys Deadpool’s body with a fan boat. Siege’s robotics detect the biological corruption and he self-terminates. Wundarr goes into hibernation to purge himself. A traumatized Jennifer Kale awaits in an observation room back at headquarters.
A.R.M.O.R. quarantines the area and examines the results, bringing in Machine Man to help. They employ Dr. Michael Morbius, a blood specialist, to find a cure for the zombie plague, but it becomes apparent that they need live human blood from the virus’ home dimension to create the vaccine. So they resolve to send androids from 616 to 2149 to collect the sample, because they are not composed of organic flesh. Jocasta joins Machine Man, and they use a teleporter to generate a portal to the alternate reality.
Meanwhile, it turns out that Morbius is actually the version from the Zombie reality, who has captured the 616 version and is holding him captive while his plans progress.
Next in part #2, Machine Man, Jocasta, and Director Little Sky arrive in Earth-2149, after which Little Sky departs. They go searching for the blood sample Morbius needs to create the vaccine. Machine Man reveals that he no longer cares for mankind, which he discusses with Jocasta. Suddenly, zombie Vulture, Falcon, Angel, and Beak attack Machine man and Jocasta from the sky. Beak grabs Machine Man only to have his head blasted off, then Falcon rips off Jocasta’s leg which promptly explodes, leaving him a shredded mess. Machine Man then throws a big buzz saw right through Angel while Jocasta disembowels him, but he manages to escape her clutches and attempt to flee. Machine Man shoots a rocket at him, killing him for good.
Meanwhile, zombie Diablo and Scorpion bring cans of food to Leader, who in turn gives them to zombie Kingpin and his still-human wife Vanessa Fisk.
Machine Man and Jocasta then infiltrate King Pin’s heavily guarded compound. They see a group of Zombies led by zombie Black Bolt exit a portal and begin talking to Kingpin and Jackal. As the two heroes eavesdrop, they hear someone mention a zombie agent in Earth-616 and something about “spreading the gospel”. They also discover that Jackal has made human clones for the zombies to feast on. The two are then spotted by Vanessa who mistakenly assumes they work for her husband. When they explain that they are travelers she remarks “Oh, like the man on the flying surfboard.”
Vanessa explains that years ago the zombified heroes ate The Silver Surfer and realized they somehow gained some of his powers. They then left Earth to find more living beings to consume. It was at this time that Kingpin was infected by the first wave of the zombie attack, but he managed to control his hunger over his wife, protect her from harm and establish his empire in ruined New York City. After, Vanessa agrees to give the two androids some of her blood.
They are about to leave the dimension until they witness some human clones being eaten. Machine Man then realizes that they are being treated like the robots from the government facility he was created in. He decides to stay and save the clones while Jocasta goes back with the blood sample.
Next in part #3, Zombie Morbius explains to his 616 counterpart that he is still affected by the zombie virus, and goes to present his innoculation plan to the rest of A.R.M.O.R.
With 22 minutes left until extraction, Jocasta is beginning to have self-doubts.
In the Kingpin’s stronghold, Machine Man blasts his way out, killing (for the final time probably), a lot of the zombies along the way. He learns how Doctor Strange of the Zombiverse was the one who originally was able to open a viewing portal to see Earth-616, and the Kingpin created the entire plan from there. Aaron steals Ghost Rider’s motorcycle to get away, and Kingpin sends his three speedsters, Quicksilver, Whizzer, and Speed Demon to stop him. Whizzer trips and gets his arm caught in the spokes of the bike, causing all four of them to explode.
In the hollow, Zombie Morbius can wait no longer and begins to spread the zombie virus. It spreads quickly throughout the base.
Director Little Sky returns for Machine Man and Jocasta, only to find that Aaron didn’t make it back. They reluctantly leave him in the Zombiverse as he calls out for Jocasta.
Finally in part #4, Jocasta and Little Sky return to the Hollow, unaware that Zombie Morbius has infected everyone there (This is made more apparent when Little Sky tells the guys behind the glass that they have the sample, not realizing they’re dead dead). Jocasta asks if Little Sky can make a memorial for Machine Man (who is still alive but stranded in the Zombieverse) and he says yes, but only after “Morbius” makes the vaccine. When Jocasta heads off to give “Morbius” the blood sample, she sees “Morbius” is a zombie and tells Little Sky, who has already found out what happened since he is seen repelling zombies. Little Sky tells Jocasta to get to teleporter bay before the zombies or Earth-616 faces Earth-2149’s fate (he really says if one of the zombies escape they could infect the whole planet) and there is a shortcut through the alternate realities containment area. Joocasta makes it to the teleporter but sees someone beat her to it (later revealed to be Simon Garth). Meanwhile, the zombies in the Zombieverse prepare to finish off a devastated Machine Man only to fall into a trap. Turns out Machine Man survived the crash and projected a damaged version of himself as a decoy. He then kills all the zombies in the vicinity except Lockjaw, who he uses to get back to Earth-616. Meanwhile, Jocasta finally gets over her self doubt and rescues two uninfected agents from the zombies. Machine Man returns and finds a lot of Hollow zombies and kills them. He then kills Lockjaw by using the hunger against him. However, Zombie Morbius refuses to accept defeat and begins attacking Machine Man only to get killed by the real Morbius (and also revealing that “cheap monster movie tricks” aren’t mere tricks). The two are then attacked by Captain Mexica, but Machine Man embraces his own identity and kills Captain Mexica, ending Kingpin’s plan. Jocasta is happy to see Machine Man alive and the two share a kiss, which Dr. Strange and Black Bolt watch while being tormented by the hunger which can no longer be satisfied. Dr. Strange conjures manna for Black Bolt, ironic since it can’t be eaten. Black Bolt asks Kingpin what he thinks only to see Kingpin is eating his wife. Meanwhile, Little Sky says things are far from over. He dismisses Machine Man and Jocasta, saying A.R.M.O.R has to clean up its own messes. Morbius requests to lead the team to hunt the escaped zombies, which Little Sky reluctantly allows. Morbius is asked who he had in mind, to which Morbius responses that the Midnight Sons must return.
