At long last! The Best-Selling Marvel Zombies franchise returns! A.R.M.O.R. is called upon to rescue a reality where the Nazis won WWII… with Zombies! Howard the Duck brings in Nazi-fighter extraordinaire Dum Dum Dugan and a squadron of fighters known as Ducky’s Dozen!
Now, Marvel Comics presents, Marvel Zombies: Destroy! A horror from another world! In an alternate dimension in which the Third Reich won World War II by becoming the unstoppable undead, the Nazi regime plans to invade and conquer – and consume – the Marvel Universe! When government agency A.R.M.O.R. (Alternate Reality Monitoring and Operational Response) calls on the misanthropic mallard Howard the Duck to assemble a team to stop the undead Nazis, he musters a brigade of Marvel’s misfits and enlists WWII veteran Dum Dum Dugan to lead them into interdimensional battle! They’ll take on zombified versions of the Invaders, Thor and the Asgardians and even one of their own as they attempt to stem the tide of invincible flesh-eating monsters dead set on devouring their world!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Zombie Invaders!”, At A.R.M.O.R. headquarters, Howard shows him slides of a universe where the Nazis won World War II by becoming zombies. Now that they have taken over the entire planet they want their reign to reach into other dimensions and are near completion on a cross-dimensional battleship. Howard wants Dugan to join him on a mission to stop them, but Dugan is unsure. Regardless, shortly after reuniting with his friend Battlestar, he agrees to help. Howard takes him to meet the rest of the Ducky Dozen, a team consisting of Red Raven, Blazing Skull, Dynaman, Eternal Brain, a lion-person named Gur, Dragoon, the robot Flexo, Breeze Barton, and a female Taxi Taylor. As they prep for battle, Red Raven mocks the idea of woman in combat, which irritates Taxi Taylor and evokes a strong reaction from Breeze Barton and Gur. However, Taxi puts him in his place by hitting him over the head with a gun. The team enters their trans-dimensional ship, flown by Taxi. They soon arrive at Earth-12591, where they are immediately shot at by cannons that fire zombies, one of which bites Gur, and though the zombies are quickly defeated, Howard is forced to push the zombified Gur out of the ship. Then, Howard orders Dynaman and Breeze Barton to leave the ship and kill the zombies that are being fired at them. Meanwhile, Dugan inadvertantly destroys the ship while firing heavy artillary inside of it, bringing the ship down. As they regroup on the ground, Breeze Barton joins them, but he is soon ripped in half by zombie Namor, who is also with Bucky Barnes and the rest of the zombified Invaders.
Next in issue #2, “Dead Dead Dugan”, In the midst of a fierce battle with the zombie Invaders, Dugan complains to Howard that he was not told about them and wants to know what else he has kept from him and why the President wanted him specifically. At the same time, Whizzer is running at them, but is torn in half by Dynaman before any harm can come to either of them. Dynaman’s next target is Union Jack, who is killed just as easily, followed by Aarkus, but Namor proves to be more of a challenge as the two of them take their fight to the sky. Meanwhile, the explosion caused by Taxi Taylor as she blows up Spitfire with a grenade makes it hard for her to see Golden Girl coming at her. But Red Raven comes to her rescue at the cost of his own life and becomes a zombie, much to Taxi’s sorrow. As the rest of the team climbs to the top of the cliff, Namor throws Dynaman into the mouth of a zombie squid. To make matters worse, what remains of the Invaders comes after them. Luckily, an all-female team called the Suffragists, led by Miss America wielding Captain America’s shield, comes to their rescue and finishes off the rest of the Invaders, aside from Bucky, who seems to have escaped. With the enemy defeated, Miss America introduces Howard and the team to the Suffragists. Libertas is a black woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty, Columbia is a sword-wielding gladiator, and Riveter is based on Rosie the Riveter and wears a welding mask and a toolbelt. The two teams journey up the cliff, during which Dugan asks Miss America how she got Cap’s shield. Miss America tells him that Cap died in battle and she took it afterwards, feeling that what he stood for was worth fighting for. They arrive at the Suffragist’s headquarters, an abandoned lab that was once used by the Nazis. There, Miss America introduces them to a Nazi scientist named Zephyr Zog, the Ducky Dozen’s inside source, who tells them the story of how the Nazis became zombies. As they were about to lose the war, the Nazis attempted to reach Asgard to strike a deal with the Norse gods. Baron von Strucker led an expedition to Tibet, where they instead found a Tibetan lama who gave them the Death Spore Flower. When Hitler ate it, he became a zombie and the outbreak began. Howard and Battlestar tell them that Zog is going to transport them to the enemy’s base in the Bavarian Alps where they will destroy their trans-dimensional battleship, Valhalla’s Hammer, and stop the zombie threat. Dugan wonders why their ship is at such a high elevation and how they were able to take over the world since there should have been weapons that could stop them. Battlestar is surprised that Howard didn’t tell him so Howard tells Dugan that the Nazis found the gods. Suddenly, an explosion occurs. From the window, Libertas takes a rope and flies to the top of the cliff with it, allowing the rest of them to climb up it. Dugan is the last one out when another explosion occurs. Howard catches him in midair and holds him dangling upside down where he sees the enemy entering the lab. It’s Bucky led by the zombified Dum Dum Dugan.
Next in issue #3, “A World Upside Down”, Zombie Dum Dum Dugan and Bucky are searching for Zephyr Zog. Zombie Dugan sees Dugan hanging from the rope. Howard accidently drops him, but he is caught by Libertas and the three of them fly to the rest of the group. After they meet up with them, Dugan chokes Howard, angry that he used him. Onboard Zog’s train, Howard explains to Dugan that he needed him so that they could get into the zombie’s headquarters by pretending to be zombie Dugan and shut down their defense systems. Dugan is still mad despite his explanation because he thinks no man should see himself that way. Battlestar asks Eternal Brain about how he came to be Eternal Brain. He tells him that he was an Eternal with enemies, so he hid as a human. But he was eventually found and killed. However, his Eternal brain lived on. After their conversation, Miss America asks Battlestar if he knows where Columbia is. In the back of the train, Taxi is moping by herself. Columbia and Riveter find her and ask her what’s wrong. She tells them she feels horrible about Red Raven, especially since she was always insulting him. As they comfort her, Columbia wonders about a green trunk that’s in the middle of the room. Though they find nothing inside, Columbia still feels something is wrong and goes to check on Zephyr Zog and Flexo, who are controlling the train. All of a sudden, zombie Valkyrie bursts in and pins Flexo down with her spear while she eats both of Zog’s eyes and flies out with Zog. Columbia returns to the group and alerts them about the situation. Soon after, she throws Zog’s head into the boxcar and takes Taxi and flies away with the rest of the Valkyries. Columbia comes to her rescue and brings her horse down by cutting its wing. Taxi is dropped, but she is saved by Eternal Brain, who uses his telekinetic powers to bring her back into the train safely. Meanwhile, Columbia and Valkyrie engage in a sword fight, aided by Blazing Skull, who, from the boxcar, fires a burst of flame at the other Valkyries from beneath them. This distracts Valkyrie long enough for Columbia to behead her, but she is bitten in the process. Wanting to die on her own terms, Columbia allows herself to collide with a train tunnel. What remains of the group grieve their loses when Loki suddenly appears before them, saying that these zombies were after him and that he is to blame for the zombie outbreak.
Next in issue #4, “Into the Belly of the Beasts”, Loki explains to the rest of the Ducky Dozen how he is to blame for the zombie outbreak and why he is being pursued by undead Asgardians: Odin had forbidden the Asgardians from having anything to do with humans. Knowing how Thor thought felt about mortals, Loki went to Earth in disguise and started the zombie plague. He hoped that Thor would either watch in horror as the mortals ate themselves or he would travel to Earth and face punishment. Instead, Odin took matters into his own hands and went to investigate the cause of the outbreak. But he needed the Odinsleep and was weak enough to be bitten by zombie Namor. And because the power of all Asgardians flows through him, every Asgardian turned into a zombie, save for Loki, who is a Frost Giant. Now allied with the Nazis, the Asgardians are searching for Loki so that they can either make him one of them or eat him. Loki wants to ally himself with the Ducky Dozen because he thinks the only way to fix things is by getting the Death Spore Flower, which is heavily guarded at the zombies’ base. Flexo informs them that several Asgardians are waiting for them up ahead. Loki’s magic has allowed him to stay hidden but using a spell that will get them to safety would alert the Asgardians to his location. As the train gets closer, Thor crashes it with his hammer and orders the others to search the train, but they find nothing. After they depart, the Ducky Dozen emerges from the green trunk, but Loki has left them. Dugan, disguised as his zombie self, infiltrates the Nazis’ headquarters. Inside, he contacts Battlestar, who informs him of the rest of the plan. Dugan is to head to the back and open the rear gate, which the Ducky Dozen will come in through and strike the enemy. Also, he mentions that there is a secret storage facility, which Dugan finds with ease. But before he can continue with the plan, zombie Arnim Zola and Baron von Strucker take him to a Red Skull rally. Meanwhile, in the woods, the Ducky Dozen are surprised by Balder and Executioner, resulting in Dragoon getting bitten. Blazing Skull and Miss America defeat the Asgardians while Battlestar decapitates the zombified Dragoon. As they are surrounded by more zombie Asgardians, Eternal Brain decides to use his powers to open the gate since Dugan hasn’t opened it yet. Soon, the gate is opened and the Ducky Dozen enter, closing it shut behind them. There, they find the Nazis’ weapon, two large zombie goats.
Finally in issue #5, “Ragna-Rocket”, After Dugan meets up with the rest of the Ducky Dozen, Loki reappears and tells them that the two giant goats are Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjoster, which, according to Norse mythology, are the goats that pull Thor’s chariot and can be eaten when he is hungry and come back to life if their bones are laid on their skin. Loki goes on to explain that they returned as zombies when Thor ate them and later devoured zombie Odin since they are technically goats. Suddenly, the Nazis and Asgardians appear and attack them. In the middle of the battle, Loki teleports Dugan and Miss America to their weapons holding facility, leaving Blazing Skull, Flexo, and Libertas, to be devoured by the goats. Loki admits to them that he lied about being able to cure the zombies with the Death Spore Flower, but an atomic bomb called Fat Man, which is mounted onto a rocket, will be able to destroy their headquarters. As they head to it, Thor appears and battles Loki. While Miss America and Dugan venture further, the zombie Dum Dum Dugan and several Nazis attack. Miss America leaves them to him, but he hits a case of highly explosive gas, resulting in an explosion. Shortly after, Miss America finds the bomb and reprograms it to hit the zombies’ base. Bucky comes to stop her, but she smashes his head against the control panel. With no way to stop the rocket, Bucky climbs up to the bomb to reprogram it manually, but Miss America bites his arm off, sending him to the ground. Dugan emerges from the explosion, but Loki is finally defeated by Thor. While Thor and zombie Dugan eat him, Loki uses his magic to send Dugan back to the others. Unfortunately, they are surrounded by the Nazis and Asgardians with no way of getting to the exit. Eternal Brain destroys the bowl protecting his brain, swelling it to a massive size, serving as a distraction and giving the Ducky Dozen a chance to escape while he is being devoured. Escaping through the exit, they find a commercial-sized refrigerator containing the remains of Captain America. Once inside, Taxi converts it into a vehicle that sends them back to their reality just as the bomb goes off, killing all of the zombies.
In A.R.M.O.R. headquarters, Taxi welcomes Riveter to their reality, promising her a new life without zombies. However, what remains of Captain America opens his eyes.
