Merlin the legendary sorcerer is best known from Arthurian legend… that’s King Arthur, Excalibur, Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. But Merlin also wore many other hats; he was a wizard or sorcerer, a prophet, a bard, an adviser to kings and a tutor to apprentices. Merlin is one of the most fascinating figures in the Welsh literature and the Arthurian legend. Merlin is a man of mystery and magic whose very character and persona have placed him within the ranks of the most “notable” in all of popular culture. Whether it’s from Movies or TV or Books or Comics or Trading Cards or any other “Merlin” Mass Marketed Merchandise, EVERYBODY has not only heard of Merlin “the Magician”, Merlin “the Sorcerer”, Merlin “the Wizard” – But EVERYBODY also knows of the persona and image of Merlin “the Magician”, Merlin “the Sorcerer”, Merlin “the Wizard”. In the pantheon of famous and notable character creations, Merlin “the Magician”, Merlin “the Sorcerer”, Merlin “the Wizard” is a world-wide phenomenon!

Now, Adventure Comics presents a Merlin tale entitled “Merlin: Idylls of the King”. Merlin is approached by a mysterious witch who is pleading for help. He agrees and a magic-filled adventure ensues.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, ”Rhiannon’s Dream”, A witch woman named Rhiannon seeking Merlin comes across a big black wolf named Baalin. The wolf leads Rhiannon to a cave where Merlin dwells. Upon having an audience with the great magician, Merllin – Rhiannon pleads for his help regarding a fallen friend. Merlin agrees and follows Rhiannon to her fallen friend out in the woods. As they arrive to the fallen man, Merlin inquires about him and Rhiannon tells the story of who the man is and how he collapsed while heading to Monmouth. Merlin is satisfied and uses his powers to awaken the man but states that it is only a temporary cure and that the man must reach Monmouth or he will surely die. For personal reasons, Merlin decides to accompany the couple to Monmouth. Along the way, they are attacked by Picts. Merlin summons Baalin, big black wolf to attack the Picts. The Picts flee and Merlin and the others set up a camp for the night. That night Rhiannon discloses that she is growing weaker. And Merlin meditates as a snake rests in his lap then slithers up to whisper in his ear. Meanwhile, deeper into the forest, Lord Gadosius, Merlin’s rival and his personal reason for going to Monmouth, declares that Merlin and all those that are with him… must die!

Finally in issue #2, ”Taken to the Sky”, Out of the forest comes a Pict with a message from Lord Gadosius for Merlin… “My Master would meet you in combat… to the death!” Merlin accepts the challenge and follows the Pict back to Lord Gadosius camp. They both engage in a wizard war and Merlin vanquishes Lord Gadosius. Afterwards, heading back to their own camp they come across Rhiannon leaning against a tree and wounded. She tells of how they were attacked by Picts and the man was dragged away to Monmouth (which just so happens to be Stonehenge). As Merlin approaches Monmouth he finds all of the Picts dead and the man nowhere to be seen. All of a sudden the man appears… but as a celestial angel. The angel tells of how he came to be on Earth and how his love for Rhiannon. The angel and Rhiannon spend a brief time together then she dies. With the angel in anguish, Merlin casts another spell and the dead woman becomes an angel like the other angel and they fly off.
