Description
Ministry of Space Comics Lot
Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Chris Weston
Colorist: Laura Depuy
All Covers by: Chris Weston
This three-issue limited series from writer Warren Ellis (The Authority, StormWatch) and artist Chris Weston (2000 A.D., Time Breakers) chronicles the development of the British space program in an alternate universe from our own. In this tale that jumps from 2001 to various points in the recent past, Sir John Dashwood begins his quest to create the Ministry of Space in the wake of World War II by preventing the Americans and the Russians from acquiring rocket technology from the Germans. From there, a meeting with Winston Churchill allows him to doggedly pursue what will become a lifelong obsession: getting a man into space and conquering the stars.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, During the dying days of World War 2, the US Army is running Operation Paperclip. This involves getting the makers of the V2 out of Germany and into America before the Russians overrun their position. This is where history takes a hard twist. The Army arrives to find the Germans, and all their machinery gone, taken by the British. In this alternate timeline, the British space program outraced the rest of the world. Now that Britannia rules the waves of space, a utopian green-field England flies ships to the Moon, to Venus, and to the Victoria Space Station in low Earth orbit. This is the Ministry that sent a colonization ship to Mars in 1963. The Ministry that destroyed a city and ran an exploration program previously unseen in human history. A Golden Age – but at what cost?
Next in issue #2, 1953: Queen Elizabeth II is about to be crowned. John Dashwood is out of the space race following the horrific conclusion to England’s first orbital flight. But that doesn’t mean he’s lost control of the Ministry of Space. And he has a way to both buy back the Ministry’s credibility and open the way to the planets for the human race. John Dashwood is mad and hated by the people – but without him, British pilots will never land on Mars in 1965. 2001: On Churchill Station, the secret that Dashwood built the Ministry on is about to be revealed and everything that he’s achieved may go up in flames…
Finally in issue #3, It’s the early 21st Century and the Ministry of Space is discovering exactly how red Sir John Dashwood’s world is. The British Empire is in orbit, on the Moon and on Mars, but it took a lot of blood to get it there. The secret of the Ministry of Space may see the sun finally go down on the empire…
