Moon Knight
Mercenary Marc Spector died in the shadow of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. He was reborn as The Fist of Khonshu, protector of those who travel at night. Recently, he’s established the Midnight Mission in New York City, offering access to anyone seeking the help of… Moon Knight.
Werewolf by Night
Victim of an ancient family curse, Jack Russell struggled for years with his bestial alter-ego. But over time has conquered his inner demons. Now he fights the dark forces that plague our world. He is an enforcer of justice, an avenger of shadows, and a Werewolf by Night.
A classic rivalry is renewed as we celebrate the legacy of the House of Ideas with Marvel Tales! Marc Spector, Moon Knight, made his debut as a silver-clad mercenary hunting Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night! And in Moon Knight (1980) #29-30, the acclaimed creative team of Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz presented their first rematch! But can Moon Knight help an out-of-control Werewolf under the dark influence of some terrible enemies? Plus: Jack sets Marc on a collision course with the vigilante known as the Shroud in Solo Avengers #3 by Roger Stern and Bob Hall! And in Marc Spector: Moon Knight #52-53 by Terry Kavanagh and James Fry, the charismatic X-Man Gambit finds himself in the deadliest place of all: caught between Moon Knight and the Werewolf!
Contents/Stories:
In “Morning Star”, In an Omaha, Nebraska, railyard, Jack Russell flees from three black-robed and hooded figures, and seeks refuge in a boxcar, as the full moon rises. The three reach the car, and the Werewolf snatches and kills one of them, as the train begins to roll. Unable to keep up, the two remaining stalkers go to the ticket seller demanding to know its destination. In Los Angeles, Schuyler Belial, who calls himself Morning Star, holds a satanic mass. When he once again can’t produce the beast from hell he has for months promised his flock, they begin to file out in disgust. Later, he receives a call from his agent in Omaha, informing him of recent events, and that Russell is headed for New York City. Belial, and some of his followers, take his private jet to New York, confident that even if Russell jumps the train, their tracking equipment will find him.
A month later, in New York, Jake Lockley enters Gena’s Diner and receives the message that Detective Flint wants a meeting with Moon Knight. Later, atop the precinct roof, Flint passes a letter to Moon Knight from Russell, requesting a meeting at a secluded house in New Jersey before dusk. Despite Frenchie’s speedy piloting, Moon Knight arrives after moonrise, finding another note from Jack. It’s a warning to bar the door to the room in which he’s locked himself, but just as Moon Knight reaches for the bar, the Werewolf erupts through the door. He stuns Moon Knight and leaps out a window. Moon Knight gives chase but is hit in the head with a log and knocked out.
The night passes, and in the morning, Moon Knight comes and finds the again human Jack Russell, whom he transports to his mansion. Later, Russell tells Moon Knight, Marlene and Frenchie of the year-long chase he’s led Belial’s men on, including one capture and escape, and Moon Knight surmises they may have implanted a tracer in Russell’s body. Moon Knight calls in a favor from a Dr. Lawson, requesting his presence and x-ray equipment. Dr. Lawson confirms there is a chip under Russell’s scalp, but it is too late in the day to begin surgery, so the doctor is asked to return the following day. Jack is strapped down as dusk approaches, but when he transforms, the Werewolf snaps his bonds and threatens Moon Knight and Marlene. Reprinted from Moon Knight (1982) Issue #29 Marvel Comics.
In “The Moonwraith, Three Sixes, and a Beast”, Continued from “Morning Star” – Moon Knight mounts a rescue mission against the satanic cult that is holding Jack Russell hostage.
The Werewolf attacks Moon Knight, who orders Marlene Alraune to the basement for protection. The battle carries the two through a window to the Grant estate grounds. The Werewolf throws his foe against a tree, then runs for the city. Sometime later, Moon Knight catches up with him on a rooftop, and the battle is joined anew. The man-beast lunges at Moon Knight, and their momentum carries them over the edge, into the alleyway below.
Both are unconscious and lay there till dawn, when Jack Russell, human again, and Moon Knight are captured by Schuyler Belial and his fellow satanists. Hours later, Belial, calling himself Morning Star, holds a gathering where he prepares to display his long-promised beast from hell. Russell and Moon Knight are chained up on the dais behind him, but many of the cultists present still doubt him. He promises proof when the moon rises and they will sacrifice a werewolf. Belial orders two of his lackeys to move the prisoners into a cage until sunset, but Moon Knight comes to, knocks out the pair, and contacts Frenchie over his cowl microphone. Soon, he and Russell are aboard and heading for Grant Mansion. Belial’s men soon follow, homing on the signal from the chip implanted under Russell’s scalp.
At the mansion, Dr. Lawson removes the chip, and Steven Grant places it in a cabinet in his billiard room. Lawson leaves, and Grant changes into his uniform, ordering Marlene to take Jack to the taxi in the garage, and await his signal to drive away.
The cultists break into the mansion and, following the signal, reach the billiard room, where Moon Knight ambushes them, as he gives Marlene the word to go. She drives to a pre-arranged rendezvous at Gena’s Diner. Marlene then hypnotizes Jack to augment his control over the beast, and to place the suggestion that he is not to harm Moon Knight. Meanwhile, pretending to be one of the satanists, Frenchie calls Belial to notify him the Werewolf has been recaptured and is en route to his New York skyscraper headquarters.
Dusk falls, and Moon Knight, disguised as a cultist, delivers Russell, who is placed upon an altar on the rooftop. As Belial readies to make the sacrifice, Moon Knight uses one of the cult’s stun weapons to shoot the knife out of Belial’s hand. The Werewolf then breaks free and dives into the satanists. Working as a team, Moon Knight and the Werewolf overwhelm the cultists, and the lycanthrope hurls Belial off the building to his death. They make quick work of the rest. As Frenchie arrives in the helicopter, Moon Knight allows the Werewolf to run off. Reprinted from Moon Knight (1983) Issue #30 Marvel Comics.
In “Tower of Shadows”, Moon Knight investigates an isolated country manor after Jack Russell tips him off that its owner knows Cornelius van Lunt’s whereabouts. When he enters the building, Moon Knight quickly discovers that the place is rigged with numerous booby traps. He eventually challenges the manor’s owner, The Shroud, to face him in open combat, which Moon Kight eventually wins. The Shroud reveals that his role as a criminal is an elaborate ruse to assist him to destroy the criminal underworld from the inside out. Furthermore, the entire ordeal at the manor was a test which Moon Knight passed as The Shroud is looking for someone to replace him as leader of the Night Shift. Moon Knight is surprised to see that Russell is himself a member of the team, but ultimately turns down the offer of leadership, preferring to stick with the Avengers. The Shroud reveals van Lunt’s whereabouts as Moon Knight leaves the estate. Reprinted from Solo Avengers (1987) Issue #3 Marvel Comics.
In “Knight’s Gambit”, In Manhattan, Marc Spector heads to his SpectorCorp offices to take care of long-neglected business, leaving his wheelchair-bound confidante, Jean-Paul DuChamp, to ponder his role as Bloodline, the potential champion of the Knights Templar. Spector, informed that the newly-established PhalkonCorp is making moves to solidify their business standing against SpectorCorp, assigns a research team to study their rivals. On his way to his office, having mistaken a previous encounter with PR Director Donna Kraft as a potential romance, Marc kisses her, and is rewarded with a slap.
At PhalkonCorp, Marlene Alraune tells her new employer Seth Phalkon she will not divulge personal information from her past relationship with Marc Spector for business purposes. Hiding his ulterior motives, he concurs.
That evening, patrolling Central Park, Moon Knight intervenes in a near-mugging/assault, then encounters two bizarre beings, Glaze and Cubist. The creatures have accosted the passengers and driver of a horse-bound carriage, Glaze encasing them in a resin-like substance, then they feed upon the horse. As Moon Knight approaches, Cubist’s pheromones affect the hero’s vision, allowing the pair to evade him. Moon Knight releases their victims from the substance and gives chase. Instead, he finds a gang of frat boys terrorizing the inhabitants of a shantytown and assists the police in rounding them up.
He later returns to his headquarters, Shadowkeep, where Jean-Paul is repairing computer equipment that, unknown to them, is systematically being damaged by a gremlin.
Meanwhile, the two intruders in Spector Mansion, Gambit and the Werewolf, fight furiously making a shambles of the place, and set off an alarm. Moon Knight rushes to his former home to find himself in the middle of the melee. Reprinted from Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1993) Issue #52 Marvel Comics.
In “Werewolf by Knight”, In Marc Spector’s Long Island mansion, a three-way battle takes place between Moon Knight, Gambit and the Werewolf. The fight rages until Moon Knight commands his hovercraft, the Angelwing, to blast a hole in the wall then lock its guns on the two intruders. Things calm down, and Gambit explains his presence there is to warn Moon Knight that his fellow X-Man Psylocke had, during the infinity War, psychically detected a health risk. Feeling invaded by the psychic probe, Moon Knight dismisses Gambit and his warning, then turns to the Werewolf to ask what his intent is. The lycanthrope relates how he sensed the demonic taint on Moon Knight, a result of the Crescent Crusader’s encounter with the possessed Hobgoblin. Moon Knight protests that he’s been purged of that taint, and the Werewolf realizes what he now senses are the stains on Moon Knight’s outfit left by the resin secreted by Glaze, one of the Hellbent. They join forces and head for Central Park.
On the way, Moon Knight contacts his assistant, Jean-Paul DuChamp, to ask about leads discovered by his Shadow Cabinet. Only one, Junior Birdman, has anything: the location of a recent sighting of Glaze, and her ally, Cubist. However, wanting to determine the connection between the Hellbent and his own destiny as Bloodline, Jean-Paul does not relay the lead to Moon Knight.
Moon Knight and the Werewolf search the park till they come upon a group of Hellbent, and a battle erupts, while the Manx, the savage agent of the Knights Templar, looks on from a treetop. The Hellbent gain the upper hand when Glaze encases the heroes within a sheath of her resin.
Downtown, meanwhile, Marc Spector’s researchers and his PR Director, Donna Kraft, look into the business moves of PhalkonCorp. Simultaneously, at his rival’s offices, Marlene Alraune grows uneasy with her increasing awareness of Seth Phalkon’s intentions of taking over SpektorCorp.
Back in Central Park, Gambit’s timely arrival releases Moon Knight and the Werewolf and the tide turns as the trio overcome their opponents. The conflict ends when Manx slaughters the remaining four Hellbent, then vanishes.
The three heroes each go their separate ways, Moon Knight returning to his headquarters, the Shadowkeep. There, Jean-Paul continues repairs on equipment that, unknown to them, is being damaged by a gremlin that now hides in Moon Knight’s new custom-built automobile.
