The Mummy subgenre represents one of the great pillars of the Horror genre. Vampires, Werewolves, and Mummies are among the staples of Horror and its origins. An often-overlooked series, Aircel Comics’ “The Mummy’s Curse” is a horrifically gory, violent, and profanity-filled take on the subgenre. This series features an intelligent monster that only has a scarce semblance to the dumb, staggering mummies typically depicted in Western media. Breaking out of the mold for the subgenre, this series is worth the read for any serious Mummy enthusiast.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Mike is almost tricked into consuming a mummifying potion by a Mummy when a girl named Catherine saves him. The two spend the night together, and then Mike insists on helping Catherine with her quest. The Mummy later tricks some other guy into drinking it and subsequently causes a scene at a bar.
Next in issue #2, As it turns out, the Mummy’s body decays very quickly and he constantly has to transfer his essence into new bodies. He does this via the potion from earlier on. Mike and Catherine follow a trail of gore and destruction down into a damp sewer in search of the Mummy. They team up with some cops, but it’s short-lived when the Mummy ambushes them and kills one while stabbing the other with the transfer potion. Mike and Catherine barely escape hungry cannibals in the sewers.
Next in issue #3, Mike and Catherine are hot on the trail of the Mummy. He uses a new tactic by summoning a swarm of undead zombies to distract them. While Mike and Cath are fleeing from the near-invincible horde, the Mummy tricks a dumb bruiser into consuming the potion. The transfer process is interrupted at the last possible second, but Mike sustains a severe injury. Catherine and Mike limp away while the Mummy is left to figure out a new plan.
Finally in issue #4, Mike, severely injured, baits the desperate Mummy into taking his dying body. Right before the transfer completes, Mike blows himself up with a grenade, crippling the Mummy’s new body. Catherine comes in to finish the job. Mourning her lost friend, she brutalizes the Mummy.
