Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster film directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman, and the first film in the Pacific Rim franchise. The screenplay was written by Travis Beacham and del Toro from a story by Beacham. The film is set in the future, when Earth is at war with the Kaiju, colossal sea monsters which have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create the Jaegers, gigantic humanoid mechas, each controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by a mental link. Focusing on the war’s later days, the story follows Raleigh Becket, a washed-up Jaeger pilot called out of retirement and teamed with rookie pilot Mako Mori as part of a last-ditch effort to defeat the Kaiju. A sequel titled Pacific Rim: Uprising was released on March 23, 2018, with Universal Pictures distributing.
Guillermo del Toro promised more adventures from the world of Pacific Rim – and he has delivered. Legendary is taking fans back to the frontlines of a larger-than-life battleground with Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift, the official new comic series presented by director Guillermo del Toro, featuring a story from Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham. Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, On the 21st June 2016 in Tokyo Bay, Tacit Ronin engages the Kaiju Itak. While lunging at the Kaiju, Tacit is caught and impaled by one of the Kaiju’s arms, causing a radiation leak. An attempt to vent the radiation instead disables the Jaeger’s electrical systems as the radiation floods into the Conn-Pod. As Tacic Ronin is struck again, Duc Jessop begins to lose consciousness as he recalls how he and Kaori met. Some time before, Duc is operating aboard an aircraft carrier while Kaori is in a submarine analysing the Breach as a Kaiju emerges. The Kaiju begins to attack the submarine as Kaori insists they wait for the analysis to complete. However, Duc arrives in a PPDC submersible and distracts the Kaiju. They target the submarine’s ballast tanks and force it to surface, causing the analysis to fail. Duc’s submarine surfaces alongside Kaori’s, and they watch as Brawler Yukon is deployed to fight the Thunderhead. Back in the present, Kaori successfully awakens Duc and they share a kiss before regaining control of the Jaeger. Although they land several hits on the Kaiju, the radition causes both of them to fall unconscious.
Features/Includes the Nerd Block Subscription Variant Comic Block Edition #1… still Poly-Sealed! Awesome!!
Next in issue #2, After falling unconscious in the previous issue, Duc and Kaori Jessop awaken to find the Kaiju Itak continuing it’s assault on the Tacit Ronin. Attempting to counter the blows, they fall into the Drift and begin to relive their memories; from their first encounter to their first drift. As Kaori reawakens, she hears LOCCENT ordering her and Duc to eject as the Jaeger’s systems become critical. Disobeying orders, she and Duc instead attack the Kaiju from behind, cutting it in half. As Kaori celebrates their victory, she turns and sees Duc has once more fallen unconscious.
Next in issue #3, July 5, 2016, two weeks after the events of their battle with Itak, Duc wakes up at the Tokyo Medical Center. There, he and Kaori are visited by Stacker Pentecost and Mako Mori. When Kaori takes Mako aside to talk to her, Stacker informeds Duc that, because of the damage their nervous systems sustained in the previous battle, they were no longer capable of safely piloting Jaeger’s and are honorably discharged. As Duc and Stacker talk, a Category II Kaiju, codenamed Ragnarok, emerges from the Breach in Tokyo Bay. Although Victory Alpha initially has the upper hand, the Kaiju is revealed to possess another set of arms. Ragnarok destroys the Victory Alpha, but its pilots, Kagiso and Itu (a sibling team), survive. With Coyote Tango still under repair, Stacker is left with no option but to order Duc and Kaori to pilot Tacit Ronin and defend Tokyo, although he warms them that the neural overload will kill them.
Finally in issue #4, Hand-in-hand, Duc and Kaori Jessop board Tacit Ronin and enter the Drift. As they connect through their memories, Stacker Pentecost tries one last time to dissuade from fighting on the reassurance that back up from the other Shatterdomes were on the way. Determined to protect Tokyo with their lives, the Jessop turn him down and enter Tokyo Bay. They face Ragnarok, and attack first, cutting it down the back, arms and chest. Ragnarok attacks Tacit Ronin’s upper body and the Conn-Pod sustains damage. The feedback from the fight through the Drift hinders the Jessop’s ability to fight. While they are able to maim Ragnarok, the Kaiju gains a momentary upper hand and tackles them into the bay. Underwater, Duc loses consciousness. During Kaori’s efforts to wake him up, they lose connection with the pons system. The two continue to fight Ragnarok with Tacit disconnected from the Drift, much to the surprise of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps heads, Pentecost and Hikai. In their final moments, Duc and Kaori are able to best Ragnarok, splitting the Kaiju down the middle, before succumbing to their injuries. At their funeral, Pentecost holds a eulogizes the late pilots, speaking of their bravery and sacrifice for the human race. As the funeral draws to a close, a tearful Mako Mori spots two red lotus plant in bloom on the coffins of Duc and Koari.
