In 2001, acclaimed director Tim Burton released a new version of Planet of the Apes. This version was an entirely new movie rather than a remake. It failed to find its audience, but the comics were a different matter. Merchandising king, Dark Horse Comics, quickly produced their own comic adaptation of the movie and started pumping the market with new series and titles spun-off from that fictional universe. The comic books proved to be fairly successful and published nine original comic adventures (also collected into three original graphic novels) before passing into cancellation as a result of the poor response to the movie which spawned them, and the abandonment of plans for a movie sequel.

The Dark Horse original comic series began with the three-issue series Planet of the Apes: The Human War (written by Ian Edginton, with art by Paco Medina, Adrian Sibar, Juan Vlasco, Norman Lee and Christopher Ivy), set a generation beyond the events of the movie, and concerned with the central characters Esau and Seneca, struggling to achieve the failed dream of ape/human harmony. Six issues, simply titled Planet of the Apes issues #1-6, led on directly from The Human War, although when these issues were collected as graphic novels, they were billed as Planet of the Apes: Old Gods and Planet of the Apes: Blood Lines. The three-comic series was published in June to August 2001, and the graphic novel in July 2001.

Story/Spoilers
First in issue #1A, Several decades after human astronaut Leo Davidson’s adventure on the ape world, ape society has been torn apart from within by a horrible civil war that’s erupted between ape rebels advocating human integration and the fearful but powerful ape regime. Is the ape, Seneca and his scattered but loyal followers of humans and apes enough to defeat the charismatic Shiva and her imposing ape army? The conflict has reached a bloody stalemate. But Shiva has a deadly secret that will end the war…and wipe out mankind! After all, the only good human is a dead human!

Next in issue #2A, The anti-human forces of Shiva’s ape army seek to exterminate the integrated human and ape resistance led by the chimp leader, Seneca, and the human, Esau. Meanwhile, a double-agent walks a dangerous line, working for the ape army while smuggling arms and provisions to the rebels. When this agent is exposed, secrets are revealed that force both sides into a race against time for the ultimate weapon in the war…and for the chance to rule the Planet of the Apes!

Finally in issue #3A, The fate of humankind is decided in this gripping finale! Shiva’s ape army seeks to deliver a killing blow to the integrated human and ape rebellion by utilizing the most terrible weapon on their planet, nuclear power! As both sides race to find the wreckage of the spaceship Oberon, Attar, the wise, semi-retired gorilla general, wonders if Shiva’s fanaticism and hatred for humans will spill over to ape kind. If so, it would lead to her tyranny over the entire Planet of the Apes!
