Joining Dark Horse’s stable of licensed titles that includes Star Wars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Planet of the Apes is a spinoff of director Tim Burton’s 2001 sci-fi film opus. It tells the tale of astronaut Major Leo Davidson’s fated attempt to rescue a chimpanzee test pilot and his arrival in the distant future on an ape-ruled world, where the treatment of enslaved humans is a volatile social issue and where Davidson’s efforts inspire a human rebellion.
This series takes place several decades after the events in the film, but the issue of human emancipation has resulted in a violent civil war between ape rebels—led by the chimp Seneca and the human Esau—and the established, dictatorial ape regime—represented by the malicious Kharim. Planet of the Apes promises to explore the dynamic established in the film and to take it in a number of intriguing directions.
Story/Spoilers
First in issue #1B, Anything that could have possibly gone wrong since “The Human War” did. The human rebel Esau and the ape leader Seneca are facing a trial for crimes against the ape state. Once triumphant, they now await a hangman’s noose. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would be rescued mere seconds from certain death by the once great gorilla warrior Attar! But Attar has an ulterior motive. Usually reclusive, he has received a cryptic message that could finally lead him to his friend, the long-disappeared Ari. He’ll need Seneca and Esau’s help as he travels through the desolate badlands to find her…and new revelations about the real evolution of their species surface!
Next in issue #2B, Hunted by the implacable Commander Kharim, the rebels Esau, Seneca, and the legendary, aged ape warrior Attar head deep into the uncharted wilds where they find a besieged outpost of apes and humans, masters and servants, fighting side by side in a battle with a primal, ancient evil…one that reveals the dark side to the origins of ape and human alike.
Next in issue #3B, Our heroic trio of Esau, Seneca, and Attar take the fight to the savage apes who have been besieging the remote, embattled township. They successfully follow them through the jungle back to their lair, but they’re not prepared for what they find. The savage apes’ home is, in fact, the lost ruins of the first Ape City abandoned centuries ago! While a hidden chapter from the history of the Planet of the Apes has been uncovered, another mystery is discovered: who or what were the Old Gods?
Next in issue #4B, The quest for answers continues, as Esau, Seneca, Attar, and Crow flee from the vicious pursuit of Scarak and his ape soldiers. When they make a stand in a snowy forest, all seems lost as one of them is severely wounded and left for dead, and the others are quickly outnumbered. A mysterious forest legend, a warrior in black armor, may provide a rescue…but will he be saving our heroes for a worse fate?
Next in issue #5B, The legendary ape warrior Kaesar saved ex-captain Attar and rebel chimp Seneca…now he’s standing idly by as they’re dragged to inevitable death by an angry ape mob!? The heroic human slave girl, Crow, isn’t the only one confused! But just as the axe blade falls, a gunshot rings out! It’s Esau, Seneca’s human ally, and a dead eye shot, at that. Though their hides are saved? for the moment? mysteries remain to be solved. Why does Kaesar, an ape, so staunchly protect a human clan? Some superstitious humans think he is not what he appears to be. And what of the side-tracked search for Ari, the reason for Attar’s arduous journey into this wild, remote landscape far, far away from the ape capital of Derkein? Will ape be set against ape once again in a bloody battle that can have no victors?!
Finally in issue #6B, It’s the battle that was bound to happen! The battle that will spark a new war between the ape nation and the collaborative ape- human resistance. But some allegiances? and destinies? are still left undefined. Will Attar, the once imposing military captain, return to Derkein to try to stop the bloodshed before it starts, even if it costs him his life? And will Esau, the human rebel leader, stand at Seneca’s side, or make an unpredictable move to bolster solely human forces, and rid the planet of their ape overlords…forever!?
