The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974). The Punisher is a war veteran and a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship.
Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park, Frank Castle becomes a vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. New Orleans — known throughout the world as the “Big Easy.” But for Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, life is anything but easy in Cajun country. Promises of never-ending partying and easy living evaporate as the Punisher discovers that weapons are powerless in the world of supernatural Voodoo and black magic. Storming the swamps of Louisiana on the trail of a drug cartel leads Frank Castle to an insidious new villain — a necromancer with the power to create zombies. The Punisher finds himself six feet under and losing air quickly. But breathing is the least of his worries. He won’t need air when he is part of an unstoppable army of the undead…
Story/Spoilers
The story begins and ends in New Orleans, but there is a “flashback” to catch us up to why the Punisher is in the state of Louisiana rather than his normal New York turf. Frank was in the middle of stopping a drug bust in New York when bullets started flying and there was no survivors. There was no one left alive that he could question about their supplier. Well, when Frank worked clean-up he noticed that one of the men had a Louisiana license as well as LA plates on his car. So Frank had Microchip look into the name on the license while he made his way to Louisiana. Well, when Microchip got back to Frank he knew to ask around for Rocky. Well, this scared the locals because they knew he was dead and they figured that Frank had something to do with it. It turns out that Rocky worked for the local thugs and answered to man named Harold Monsarrat. Monsarrat had some connections in the underworld of New Orleans as well as the high-class. It was a mighty thin line that Monsarrat was walking and if Frank had his way, Mr. Monsarrat won’t be walking on it much longer. When Monsarrat’s first plan to take of the Punisher fails, he calls in a man known as the Mortician. He is an expert in Voodoo as well as a henchman of evil. The Mortician and his men managed to capture Frank and bury him alive. Frank got out of that ordeal with a little help by a witness to his burial. Once Frank regained his nerve, he went after the Mortician as well as Monsarrat. Any Punisher fan knows how it all turned out. The Punisher does, what he does best! It is a must read for any die-hard Punisher fan.
