The Punisher (a.k.a. Frank Castle) was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, with publisher Stan Lee green-lighting the name. The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974). The Punisher is a war veteran and a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship.
Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park, Frank Castle becomes a vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. As the Punisher, he wages a one-man war on the mob and all violent criminals. His family’s killers were the first to be… Punished!
The Punisher is tracking down a murderous drug-lord, but he’ll have to get through the merc-for-hire known as the Paladin first. Plus, to make matters worse, the government has sent the super-human USAgent to bring down Frank Castle once and for all. It’s a three-way stand-off between three of the hardest men in the Marvel Universe.
Story/Spoilers
Someone’s fomenting war between the families of organized crime, and though you might expect this to be music to the ears of the Punisher, innocents are getting caught in the middle. To stop the slaughter, he has to find out who’s responsible, and put an end to it, as only he can. But the conspiracy is larger than he could ever imagine, reaching into both the Maggia and the U.S. government. To stop the Punisher, the conspirators have brought in mercenaries of their own. Super-powered Paladin, a gun for hire, is offered a deal that would set him up for life—if only he takes the life of the Punisher. U.S.Agent, the would-be Captain America, is given direct, but suspicious orders to bring in the skull-chested vigilante. Enemies, comrades, and pawns…for these three, and for the criminals behind the scenes, there ultimately could be no escape from the explosion that follows.
