The Punisher (a.k.a. Frank Castle) was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, with publisher Stan Lee green-lighting the name. The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974). The Punisher is a war veteran and a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship.
Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park, Frank Castle becomes a vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. As the Punisher, he wages a one-man war on the mob and all violent criminals. His family’s killers were the first to be… Punished!
After having first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #129, Frank Castle, a.k.a. the Punisher, later got his own title. Following up on this title’s popularity, Marvel later introduced several other titles featuring the death-dealing vigilante, including Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, and Punisher War Journal. As well as many, many other mini-series and one-shots… along with countless appearances throughout the entire Marvel Universe.
Now, in The Ghost of Innocents, Innocent victims are killed in a crossfire when the Punisher attempts to stop a pack of drug dealers. The pursuit of the criminals ends badly when a train hits a bus full of kids. Frank becomes haunted by their memories and goes catatonic. Is he being haunted by their ghosts or does he have a concussion? The Kingpin is involved through his dealings with the criminals. Recovering… the Punisher vows to get deadly vengeance on all those that were involved. And this includes… the Kingpin.
Story/Spoilers
In book #1, Tough guys finish last… maybe so. But, as the Punisher learns, that means dealing with the fact that all those who are not so tough “finish” at other points along the way… innocent people like children… like his own family. Paralleling the tragic deaths of those nearest to him, the Punisher is thrust into a situation that opens old wounds. While chasing drug dealers who operate near a school, our hero is put in the precarious position of trying to stop the bad guys AND protect those who might get in the way. But, things go horribly wrong. Victims ARE caught in the line of fire, and there was nothing that could be done to stop it. Now, haunted by these deaths, and suffering from a concussion, the Punisher goes after those responsible… namely a man named Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. Will Frank Castle be able to seek revenge and put tortured souls, including his own, at rest? Or, will he succumb to the weakness of his own human body?
Finally in book #2, Faced with the guilt of watching innocents killed in the line of fire, the Punisher goes full-force after the ringleader of crime – Wilson Fisk. But, as the Kingpin cleverly avoids capture, the concussion Frank Castle has suffered, combined with his weakened body, pushes him over the edge – into the oblivion of his own mind. Now, in police custody, still haunted by the ghosts of the innocent and still seeking revenge on their killers, the Punisher must escape the hospital ward where he is being held. The chase starts anew… this time with even more vengeance! Will the Punisher get satisfaction? Will the restless spirits that haunt him find peace? Will the Ghost of the Innocents be vindicated?
