The Punisher (a.k.a. Frank Castle) was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, with publisher Stan Lee green-lighting the name. The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974). The Punisher is a war veteran and a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship.

Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park, Frank Castle becomes a vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. As the Punisher, he wages a one-man war on the mob and all violent criminals. His family’s killers were the first to be… Punished!

During a routine stakeout, Frank Castle discovers that a super weapon is going to auctioned on the Black Market. Now the Punisher and an American reporter, looking to blow the top on the story, find themselves sucked into a deadly game of cat and mouse as professional killers from all over the world will stop at nothing to possess The Prize.

Story/Spoilers
Frank Castle wanted to put Vietnam behind him and get on with his life. His wife and children loved him. His was going to be a good existence. And it was – for a while. Then, mob violence tore his family from him, leaving him incapable of any emotion except the desire for revenge. His old life gone now, he exists as the Punisher. “He who does not punish evil commands it to be done.” In The Prize, daVinci’s words lie coldly at the heart of the Punisher’s conflict. As a mysterious, year old invitation to a black market auction draws him and a glamorous network reporter into a international free-for-all, the driven adventurer feels for the first time that perhaps enough is finally enough. How long, he wonders, must he deny himself a normal existence? How long? Is the Punisher ready to give up his war? Perhaps…
