The groundbreaking new game from the developers of Doom and Quake is almost here, but first Dark Horse presents an essential introduction to the world of Rage!
The Earth has been devastated by collision with an asteroid, with a tiny fraction of the population surviving in life-sustaining arks, only to awaken in a wasteland controlled by a global military dictatorship called the Authority. But a rescued scientist learns that the Authority has lied to her and the other survivors about how this new world came to be.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Armageddon finally came not from humanity’s arsenals of mass destruction, but from the cold, interstellar reaches of heaven itself. By 2029 it became clear Asteroid 99942, code named Apophis, would smash into Earth. World governments created burrowing cryo arks to spare political and scientific elites. The arks were to resurface with their suspended human cargo once the destruction wrought by Apophis subsided. But key members of the military who oversaw the Eden Project and maintained its secrecy had their own ideas. How could civilians be entrusted with the survival of the human race in the new and most probably violent post-Apophis world? Twelve military officers, styling themselves “The Twelve Visionaries,” unilaterally assumed control of the program days before the arks were to be inserted into the ground. The Visionaries liquidated everyone involved, sparing only the scientist and engineering experts. These they placed into “protective custody” and forced onto arks at gunpoint. Finally, on March 21, 2037, military leaders entered their own arks, programmed to reemerge from the ground well before the others. On April thirteenth, Apophis smashed into Earth. Five billion people died within twenty-four hours. They were the lucky ones.
Next in issue #2, Asteroid 99942, code named Apophis, smashed into Earth on April 13, 2037. Five billion people died within twenty-four hours. They were the lucky ones. It is now 2095. Dr. Elizabeth Cadence, a nanotrite-technology researcher, has awoken for her long slumber within a cryo ark, a burrowing device created to preserve scientific and political elites from destruction. A military junta now called the Authority seized control of the Eden Project days before the arks were inserted into the ground. Authority soldiers saved Elizabeth from wasteland bandits and brought her to a research facility located in a vast necropolis. Colonel James Casey, the facility’s commander, informed Elizabeth her husband and son did not survive their time in the ark. He convinced her to engage in research into a bizarre series of human mutations caused by feltrite, a mineral brought to Earth by Apophis. Elizabeth has reconnected with Dr. Antonin Kvasir, an old friend and colleague. Kvasir has advised Elizabeth not to ask questions about the Authority’s ultimate goals. Colonel Casey drove that point home by engineering a disastrous accident in the course of Elizabeth’s first experiment. Despite this, she cannot stop wondering about the Authority’s objectives, or the fate of her family…
Finally in issue #3, Asteroid 99942, code named Apophis, smashed into Earth on April 13, 2037. Five billion people died within twenty-four hours. They were the lucky ones. Colonel James Casey, the facility’s commander, convinced Elizabeth to investigate a series of bizarre frightening human mutations supposedly caused by feltrite, a material brought to Earth by Apophis. Elizabeth has reconnected with Dr. Antonin Kvasir, an old friend and colleague. Kvasir has advised Elizabeth not to pry, but Elizabeth discovered Authority researchers, not feltrite, had caused the mutants. She also learned that the Authority killed her husband and son, who had been sealed in her cryo ark with her. Colonel Casey, captured Elizabeth immediately after her discoveries, but the bonds restraining her mysteriously untied themselves, enabling her escape…
