Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonja
Red Sonja (aka… Red Sonya of Rogatino) is a fictional Sword & Sorcery character created by the pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard. Known as the “She-Devil with a Sword,” Red Sonja is the greatest swordswoman of the Hyborean Age and more than a match for any man in combat. Red Sonja has become the archetypal example of the strikingly beautiful warrior woman clad in revealing bikini-like armor. “The Shadow of the Vulture” is a short story by American writer Robert E. Howard, first published in The Magic Carpet Magazine, January 1934. The story introduces the character of Red Sonya of Rogatino, who later became the inspiration for the popular character Red Sonja. Since then, Red Sonja has become the greatest Sword & Sorcery heroine character of all time. Her adventures have since been adapted to books, comics, and trade paperbacks from many different publishers. And Red Sonja was adapted into a film in 1985 starring Brigitte Nielsen.
Blackthorne Publishing presents another in its series of 3D comics, (#53) this one featuring a Three-Dimensional take on Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya. Red Sonja is the Savage She-Devil with a Sword. This Special 3-D comic features the three-dimensional story, Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonja.
Story/Spoilers
In “Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonja”, In the city of Razadan, a young Red Sonja is brought before the city’s guild of thieves. She is told that she must join the guild or die. She is tasked with stealing the Nuptial Jewels of Princess Ara Selli or die. The task itself is impossible with almost certain death. But Robert E. Howard’s woman warrior, Red Sonja goes undercover as a hairdresser (of all things) for the princess, as a way to get close to a palace treasure. After finding the treasure, Red Sonja experiences an unusual turn-of-events when the Princess confronts her as a thief, but then offers her to perform a task. The Princess who is betrothed, wants Red Sonja to ruin her betrothed’s reputation. The Princess despises her betrothed. Red Sonja plants some of the Nuptial Jewels on the betrothed and he becomes exposed. The King is enraged at the perceived betrayal and declares that the betrothed will have his arms cut off. The Princess, not wanting harm to come to her betrothed (but just wanting out of the marriage) betrays Red Sonja. Red Sonja acquires a sword and does what she does best and makes her escape… with the jewels.
