Robert E. Howard created a number of fictional sword-wielding warriors; Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and others. However, Cormac Mac Art was a historical sword-wielding warrior that Robert E. Howard used to write epic fantasy stories. Cormac mac Airt (son of Art), also known as Cormac ua Cuinn (grandson of Conn) or Cormac Ulfada (long beard), was, according to medieval Irish legend and historical tradition, a High King of Ireland. Now, with this series, Roy Thomas brings to comicdom yet another epic adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s works – this time in a four-issue black and white mini-series from Dark Horse Comics.

Cormac Mac Art, an Irish pirate during the Dark Ages, is sailing with Danish pirates on a mission to rescue the daughter of some Briton ruler. Their search takes them to an island called Golmara where they must fight Picts, Vikings, satyrs, sorcery and other monstrosities… what’s a fantasy tale without monsters, magic and maidens? And of course, Cormac and his bear-like partner Wulfhere Skull-Splitter are the first in battle.

This four-issue miniseries is freely adapted from the Cormac Mac Art stories; “The Temple of Abomination”, “Tigers of the Sea”, “The Night of the Wolf”, “Swords of the Northern Sea” by Robert E. Howard.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Temple of Abomination”, Their longship wrecked on an uncharted coastline, Cormac and his band of Viking pirates discover a mysterious temple inhabited by a horde of monsters, and ruled by a Dark Druid – the last of the Serpent Men!

Next in issue #2, “Chapter II: Isle of the Swords”, Cormac and his crew attempt to rescue a hostage king, only to find themselves caught in the middle of a war between the Vikings and the Picts – a war Cormac wants no part of!

Next in issue #3, “Chapter III: Golka of the Moon”, Cormac and his Viking shipmates try to rescue a beautiful Briton from the Pictish Moon-god Golka on the deadly Isle of Alters!

Finally in issue #4, “Chapter IV: The Last Shoggoth”, Cormac faces one of the deadliest god-beasts ever to crawl upon the face of the Earth- a Shoggoth – one of H.P. Lovecraft’s creations (Howard, in addition to Conan and Cormac, also wrote some stories using the creatures crafted by Lovecraft).
