In a meteoric career that spanned a mere twelve years, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword and sorcery. From his fertile imagination sprang some of fiction’s most enduring heroes. Yet while Conan is indisputably Howard’s greatest creation, it was in his earlier sequence of tales featuring Kull, a fearless warrior with the brooding intellect of a philosopher, that Howard began to develop the distinctive themes, and the richly evocative blend of history and mythology, that would distinguish his later tales of the Hyborian Age. Much more than simply the prototype for Conan, Kull is a fascinating character in his own right: He is a fierce warrior, ruthless and courageous on the battlefield, but not tyrannical or cruel. He has a strong sense of chivalry and virtue. Unlike Conan, Kull is much more philosophical and brooding. He agonizes over decisions that affect the lives of those around him, always looking for the most noble action to take. He is uncomfortable with kingship and prefers the life of a general. An exile from fabled Atlantis who wins the crown of Valusia, only to find it as much a burden as a prize.

The UK based small press Wandering Star issued glorious editions of Robert E. Howard s work, including The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, The Ultimate Triumph, as well as two volumes of Howard’s Conan tales. Now, Subterranean Press continues the “series” of limited editions, beginning with Kull: Exile of Atlantis, exquisitely illustrated with color plates. This highly collectable Deluxe Limited Edition Leatherbound Hardcover w/ Slipcase is equal to the very best in illustrated classics. The finest craftsman, artists and designers have produced a masterpiece that promises to be at the heart of all good book collections. This groundbreaking collection, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist Justin Sweet, gathers together all Howard’s Kull stories, textually restored and meticulously researched by Howard scholar Patrice Louinet. Featuring Kull, from Kull’ s first published appearance, in “The Shadow Kingdom,” to “Kings of the Night,” Howard’s last tale featuring the cerebral swordsman. The stories are presented just as Howard wrote them, with all subsequent editorial emendations removed. Contains the following stories, unabridged and unexpurgated, Exile of Atlantis, The Shadow Kingdom, The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune, The Cat and the Skull, The Screaming Skull of Silence, The Striking of the Gong, The Altar and the Scorpion, The Curse of the Golden Skull, By This Axe I Rule!, Swords of the Purple Kingdom, he King and the Oak (poem), Kings of the Night, and more. Robert E. Howard’s original writing adds a richness to each of Justin Sweet’s fine illustrations of Kull. A real treasure from Subterranean Press showcasing two legends, Robert E. Howard & Justin Sweet, in their own right. A considerable must-have for any serious Robert E. Howard, Kull, and/or Justin Sweet enthusiast / collector.

This Deluxe Limited Edition Leatherbound Hardcover w/ Slipcase is signed Justin Sweet and is numbered out of 50. Includes exclusive chapbook of additional sketches. Also included are previously unpublished stories, drafts, and fragments, plus extensive notes on the texts, an introduction by Howard authority Steve Tompkins, and an essay by noted Howard scholar Patrice Louinet. Robert E. Howard’s Kull stories are presented in an un-expurgated, artistic and beautiful hardcover edition, skillfully illustrated with numerous original drawings and tonal paintings accompanied with 12 plate full-color artwork portfolio bound in at the back of the book. The plates are the same artwork as the tonal paintings within the book. All specially commissioned from award-winning artist Justin Sweet.

Deluxe Limited Edition Leatherbound Hardcover also features color illustrated endpapers, durable stitch binding, and a slipcase with embossed full-color plate.
