Welcome to the first comic book to be published by Conquest Press. “The Vultures of Whapeton” is the first Robert E. Howard adaptation to be graphically depicted in Conquest Press comics. Robert E. Howard’s Wild West tale of the town of Whapeton, and the outlaws who terrorize it… who call themselves The Vultures. After a brutal and deadly “revenge” killing, the sheriff of Whapeton “deputizes” the killer to help fight against The Vultures. Later, following a few brief introductions to the Sheriff’s cohorts, the new deputy makes his way around the town meeting the ladies and dispensing immediate brutal justice. Soon after, the plot thickens as the deputy learns that the sheriff of Whapeton is actually the chief of The Vultures with plans of eliminating all of his competition in Whapeton and making off with a million in gold. What ensues is double crossings, deception, gun fights galore, revenge and inevitably death. Robert E. Howard’s storytelling heats up and gets out of hand as male dominance has its way, western style.
Features:
“The Vultures of Whapeton” (graphic adaptation, 30 pages)
An awesome article on Robert E. Howard entitled “Vultures of Cross Plains” by Fred Blosser (2 pages) (see 12th scan)
Story/Spoilers
The western mining town of Whapeton is under a cloud of terror from an outlaw band called the Vultures. Nobody knows who is a member. The sheriff, Middleton, hires a Texas gunslinger, Corcoran, to replace his deputy, killed in an ambush. But Corcoran soon learns the truth – Middleton is the head of the Vultures. He hired Corcoran simply to placate the townsfolk. Even worse, Middleton plans on double-crossing his own gang and skipping town with a fortune in gold – a fortune which he offers to split with Corcoran if the gunslinger will help him. Corcoran is an unlikely hero, and pragmatically agrees to the plan. Unfortunately, he falls in love with a dancehall girl. When she gets in Middleton’s way, the sheriff takes care of her, and Corcoran takes care of the sheriff…
