Description
Savage Tales #3: Featuring Conan The Barbarian Magazine
Front Cover by: Pablo Marcos
Following the successful debut of Conan the Barbarian in its color comics line the year before, Marvel attempted to move to the less-restricted, non-Comic Code arena of the black and white magazine format in 1971. Rated “M For The Mature Reader!” the stories presented here contained slightly more daring themes. The lead feature was a Conan story; “The Frost Giant’s Daughter” adapted by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Barry Smith. Additional features included the first appearance of The Man-Thing and a more brutal, Ka-Zar.
Poor distribution led to the title‘s cancellation after one issue. The magazine was revived in 1973, this time with more success. In 1974, Ka-Zar became the lead feature with Conan headlining a new title, The Savage Sword of Conan. “The Frost Giant’s Daughter” was colored to make some adult scenes appropriate for the color comic and saw print in Conan the Barbarian #16.
Savage Tales #3: Featuring Conan The Barbarian Magazine contains:
“The Lurker in the Catacombs”
Story by: Robert E. Howard
Writer: Roy Thomas
Artist: Barry Smith
Inker: Barry Smith
The conclusion of the “Red Nails” story from the previous issue, Savage Tales # 2. Adapted from the story by Robert E. Howard. Conan and Valeria are hired by Prince Olmec to defend his side of the strange walled city.
——————————————————————————–
“An Age Undreamed of”
An editorial on Savage Tales by Roy Thomas.
——————————————————————————–
“Red Sonja”
Writer: Roy Thomas
Artist: Esteban Maroto
2-page spread of Red Sonja (awesome… see scan!!)
——————————————————————————–
The Crimson Bell
Writer: Ray Capella
Artists: Al Williamson & Frank Brunner
Text story starring Arquel of Argos. The Crimson Bell is a very special Arquel story, in that it is the earliest story (chronologically speaking ) of the entire series. For one reason or another, it’s never been published before — so we were delighted when Ray Capella agreed to let us present it to an eager public in this issue of Savage Tales. The adventure, of course, takes place in the age of Conan — the fabled, Howard-created Hyborian Age of 12,000 years ago. And that, as they say, is all you know or need to know before you start reading — and enjoying.
——————————————————————————–
“The Fury of the Femizons”
Writer: Stan Lee
Artist: John Romita
Inker: John Romita
Come with us to the Future… to the strange and savage 23rd century! Marvel at a world ruled by women.. by the vicious voluptuaries we call… The Femizons!

The Art of “Red Nails”

Beginning a New Series: The Artists of Conan
——————————————————————————–
“The Once and Future Talon”
Writer: Jim Steranko
Artist: Jim Steranko
Talon… Jim Steranko’s own unique version of the kind of Barbarian hero first fully envisioned by Robert E. Howard.
——————————————————————————–
“Savage Tales Features Pages”
Writer: Erwin Stevenson
A Probable outline of Roy Thomas’ career and an informal History of Barry the Barbarian.
——————————————————————————–
“He Comes from the Dark”
Story by: Robert E. Howard
Writer: Roy Thomas
Artist: Barry Smith
Inker: Barry Smith
