Description

Sergio Aragones’ Groo (1988)                                     Comics Lot
Writers: Sergio Aragones & Mark Evanier
Artist: Sergio Aragones
Letterer: Stan Sakai
Colorist: Tom Luth
Editor: Scott Allie
Cover by: Sergio Aragones

After stints at Pacific, Eclipse, Marvel, and Image, Sergio Aragonés’ Groo came to Dark Horse in 1998. Aragonés, a veteran of numerous humor titles, such as Plop!, as well as decades of drawing marginals for Mad magazine, is in great form as he begins the new series. Once again, Mark Evanier handles scripting duties, making the Evanier/Aragonés partnership on Groo one of the longest in the comics business.

The only thing that seems to have changed in the series is Groo himself. As the series begins, the chowderheaded engine of destruction has become—can it be?—smart! The Minstrel, who has chronicled Groo’s exploits these many years is stunned to catch up with a Groo who seeks peaceful solutions to conflicts, uses strategy and good thinking, and speaks with a vastly increased vocabulary. Has Peter David (The Incredible Hulk) been ghostwriting for Evanier? Or is it something far more sinister…?

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, If you thought Groo was a dangerous idiot, wait till you see how dangerous he is now that he’s intelligent…

Next in issue #2, Groo faces off with two of his oldest and most vile foes: Arba and Dakarba, two witches very much confused by the barbarian’s newfound intelligence. A spell that could turn Groo into a wiseman could make these two into goddesses… but there’s a catch to his impressive intellect.

Next in issue #3, Always working a new scam, the usually unlucky scoundrels Pal and Drumm return to try to profit from the secret behind Groo’s newfound intelligence.

Finally in issue #4, Groo’s latest and most clever adventure comes to the typical moronic conclusion…
