“Sometimes standing up for your friends means killing a whole lot of people.”
Frank Miller’s Sin City first appeared in Dark Horse Presents #51–62 before these stories. Each series is intended to stand alone, published when ready rather than on a strict schedule. Sin City itself is a setting for each story-line, unnamed but seemingly rotten to the core. The characters all converge on Old Town, a no-go area for cops where the law is the law of the fist, the gun or, in some cases, the sword. At the heart of Old Town is a bar where strippers dress as cowboys and money will buy you almost anything. The women of the bar are also the area’s enforcers; if you cross them, you won’t live to regret it. But underlying all of the tales is something like the Japanese code of bushido, where honor means everything, especially if it’s all you’ve got.
A Dame To Kill For is the second story arc in Frank Miller’s Sin City universe. It introduces us to the character of Dwight McCarthy, a man struggling to control a lot of pent-up rage and to figure out his place in Sin City. He impulsively gets involved again with his ex-wife Ava Lord who betrayed him. His obsession causes his life to quickly spiral out of control in this powerful tale of lust and revenge. The story makes use of the fully realized universe of Sin City and loops in Marv from The Hard Goodbye and the Girls from Old Town.
Now, Dark Horse Comics presents, “A Dame to Kill For”, It`s one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight`s thinking of all the ways he`s screwed up and what he`d give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb grey hell that is his life. And he`d give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time. And then Ava calls…
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, In Sin City, it’s easy to hide from the present, but impossible to forget the past. Frank Miller makes a return trip to Sin City and brings eager readers along for the ride. On the way, meet Dwight, a photographer who specializes in hard-to-get shots… the incriminating kind. The kind that lead to messy, expensive divorces. Dwight’s doing his best to forget the past, and was doing a pretty good job until the phone rang. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For #1 is another no-holds-barred, chiaroscuro excursion to the favorite city of Frank Miller, winner of the National Cartoonists’ Award for Best Comic Book of 1992. This premiere issue features cover-to-cover story and a special mystery guest.
Next in issue #2, In Sin City, love means never going to the police. The second issue of the most anticipated series of the year brings Dwight face to face with the woman from his past – Ava – and her bodyguard, Manute. Ava has secrets. Secrets about her husband… and his indulgences. Manute is just plain trouble. Join Frank Miller for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For #2, a visit to the real Sin City… where tourists don’t go after dark.
Next in issue #3, In Sin City, trust is a four-letter word. In spite of himself, Dwight finds himself in love with Ava all over again. There’s only one problem… her husband. A man who has promised to kill her. In order to rescue Ava, Dwight must first get past the most dangerous chauffeur in the world, Manute. But, when you’re friends with Marv, it’s amazing how much help you can get for buying the beer.
Next in issue #4, In Sin City, a good friend knows how to take a bullet. And a good friend is just what Dwight’s going to need. Ava’s husband is dead, and Dwight did it… for love. Now he’s on the run. But it’s going to take more than love to keep Dwight away from the police and a killer who wants his life. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For continues Frank Miller’s tour through the underbelly of the city where black and white is a way of life.
Next in issue #5, In Sin City, no good deed goes unpunished or double-cross unavenged. Her husband murdered, Ava is the richest woman in Sin City. But, being rich isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be… especially when someone wants vengeance. Vengeance from beyond the grave. Join Frank Miller for the penultimate chapter of the year’s most exciting series!
Finally in issue #6, In Sin City, there’s only one thing that money can’t buy – a second chance. Ava’s in trouble and Dwight seems to be the cause. But, what does she have to fear from Dwight? He’s dead… just ask him. Can a cop named Mort and Manute, the world’s toughest chauffeur, keep Ava from being the richest dead woman in Sin City? Don’t miss Frank Miller’s conclusion to the most exciting new series of the year!
