Description
Sin City: Silent Night One-Shot Comic
Writer: Frank Miller
Artist: Frank Miller
Editor: Bob Schreck
Front Cover by: Frank Miller
Back Cover by: Frank Miller
Frank Miller’s Sin City first appeared in Dark Horse Presents #51–62 before these stories. Each series is intended to stand alone, published when ready rather than on a strict schedule. Sin City itself is a setting for each story-line, unnamed but seemingly rotten to the core. The characters all converge on Old Town, a no-go area for cops where the law is the law of the fist, the gun or, in some cases, the sword. At the heart of Old Town is a bar where strippers dress as cowboys and money will buy you almost anything. The women of the bar are also the area’s enforcers; if you cross them, you won’t live to regret it. But underlying all of the tales is something like the Japanese code of bushido, where honor means everything, especially if it’s all you’ve got.
Six years before Marvel’s “Nuff Said” month, Frank Miller put out this mostly silent tale set in the Town Without Pity, which set a high standard for pictorial story telling. This classic crime drama follows the story of a Basin City cop working to get a kidnapped little girl, Kimberly, freed in whatever manner possible. This story is tightly written and illustrated such that the dialogue is kept to an absolute minimum while providing an enjoyable story.
Story/Spoilers
Against a backdrop of heavy snow, Marv (a hulking, scarred figure in a trenchcoat) approaches a door in a dark alley. He intimidates the bouncer, Fatman, by simply glaring at him, and is let in. He proceeds down a flight of stairs, and is met by two men with machine pistols and a leather-clad woman, who is apparently their boss. Marv hands her a wad of bills and is shown to a steel door in the far wall. Through a small viewing slit, he can see a terrified little girl crouching in darkness in the room beyond. It is not stated, but is apparent that the child was being sold for sex. Marv draws two pistols and kills the pair of henchmen, then executes the woman, the only time he kills a woman in all of his Sin City appearances. He says to the little girl, “Your momma’s been asking after you, Kimberly. Let’s get you home.” Cuddling the girl gently in his arms, he walks off into the distance, as the snow obscures his receding form.
