Description
Slaine The Berserker Issue #1 Comic
Writer: Pat Mills
Artist: Michael McMahon
Letterer: Tom Frame
Cover by: Michael McMahon
Slaine The Berserker #1 reprints one of the British comic strips from 2000 AD in 1977. Following the success of this first issue, Quality Comics went on to publish another 27 issues, resulting in one of the best collections of barbarian content available!
Created by Pat Mills and Angie Kincaid, Sláine is a Celtic warrior from the distant past. Having been driven out of his tribe for cuckolding the King, he wandered the country for years, adventuring as he went. Eventually he returned to his people, and united the Tribes of the Land of the Young, becoming the first High King of Ireland. He ruled wisely for seven years, before being ritually put to death, in accordance with tradition, so he could be one with the Earth Goddess. Once in the Otherworld, Sláine traveled through time to defend the Earth Goddess in future eras.
In battle, Sláine can go into a berserker rage that can trigger a warp spasm. When this happens his body is monstrously transformed by the power of the Earth flowing through him, and he gains incredible strength. His axe is called Brain Biter and he normally travels with Ukko, a dwarf who chronicles his deeds.
Story/Spoilers
While recovering from wounds under the care of a dwarf, Slaine discovers that the “bleeding” technique the dwarf was using to “heal” him was actually a farce. In a rage over being taken advantage of, Slaine goes to exact vengeance upon the dwarves… things don’t quite go his way, though. Later, Slaine goes to battle with a man-sized beast. Slaine wins the first confrontation, but that isn’t enough to end the beast’s reign of terror.
