The multi-talented Todd McFarlane broke into the comic “big time” at Marvel, bringing his dynamic writing and artistry to a number of titles, most notably the Amazing Spider-Man. Having proved himself, Marvel awarded him his own title, Spider-Man, whose premiere issue was the best-selling comic book of 1991. Eventually, Todd set his sights even higher, leaving Marvel to help found Image Comics.

Spawn is McFarlane’s first title at Image. Its title character is a mysterious man, dead for five years, who is brought back to life as a cloaked Hellspawn, or “’Spawn.” In life, he was Al Simmons, but more than that he remembers only in flashes: a wife, the shadowy organization he worked for, and murders …including his own.

Al Simmons, formerly one of our government’s greatest soldiers, was resurrected from the ashes of his own grave. Reborn as a creature from the depths of Hell, disfigured, homeless and alone, this new warrior know as Spawn now wanders the shadowy alleys of New York City in search of his past life. Robbed of his memories and identity, this freshly created man whose body is nothing more than scars and torn flesh becomes a protector of the weak, the poor, the downtrodden, and other victims of circumstance. While Spawn tries to piece together his confusing existence, an unwelcome mentor reveals the purpose of his abrupt return to earth. But since this guide comes from the dark side, can he be trusted to tell the truth?  And just what is the truth?
