Description
Star Trek: Annual 1986 Hardcover
Cover by: ???
To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before.
Star Trek is an American space opera media franchise based on the science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The first television series, simply called Star Trek and now referred to as “The Original Series”, debuted in 1966 and aired for three seasons on the television network NBC. It followed the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise, a space exploration vessel, built by the United Federation of Planets in the twenty-third century. The Star Trek canon of the franchise includes The Original Series, an animated series, five spin-off television series, the film franchise, and further adaptations in several media.
Star Trek: Annual 1986 is the final installment in World International Publishing’s line of annuals. As with its predecessor’s, it reprints two comics from the 1st Star Trek series and is chock full of games, puzzle, and other forms of Star Trek entertainment.
Star Trek: Annual 1986 contains:
Star Trek (Gold Key 1974) #27
Writer: John Warner
Artist: Alberto Giolitti
Inker: Al McWilliams
Captain’s log, stardate 20:27.3
Approaching planet Floe I on special survey assignment for the Federation per Command order F-1221.
The USS Enterprise was assigned to conduct a population survey of the Federation member planet Floe I. Privately, Spock wonders if there might be something unusual about the mission which wasn’t told to them, as the planet is facing glaciation. James T. Kirk, Spock, and Dr. Krisp suit up with anti-freeze uniforms and beam down, meeting Delegates Amara and Sunaro who are encased in protective carapaces for warmth. The Floes shed the shells as they prepare to slide down chutes into a subterranean city. But Spock and Krisp question how these evolutionary changes happened so quickly and whether they affected everyone, and this strikes a nerve. Amara and Sunaro arrest the Starfleet officers. At gunpoint, Kirk is forced to have Nyota Uhura transport down and help falsify their report.
Captain’s log, stardate 20:27.5
Lieutenant Uhura and I are being held prisoners by the two leaders of Floe I — Dr. Krisp and Mr. Spock have vanished! It is clear that Amara and Sunaro intend to do away with the crew and me as soon as Lieutenant Uhura writes a false report about their mad society to the Federation… My only hope is that we manage to fool these tyrants and come out alive… I have lost all communication with the Enterprise!
Red-skinned Floe scientists developed a serum to speed-up mutations and survive the cold, but left their enslaved blue-skinned Floes to suffer. Spock and Krisp are deposited in a torture chamber for rebels, who help them escape in exchange for aid. They confront Amara and Sunaro, and the reunited landing party locates the serum manufacturing facility. Krisp keeps her word and tells the blue workers where the rebels are being held. Before Kirk can start distributing the serum to everyone, workers rise up in rebellion.
Kirk orders the landing party to return to the Enterprise. When Montgomery Scott asks how they could leave the Floes in the midst of civil war, acting as though life will go on, Spock explains that the blue Floes are aware that they will freeze to death within days and have lost hope. Kirk says the Floes could have been relocated to another planet, if they’d asked when there was time to arrange it, but the red Floes chose their elitism and slavery over survival.

Captain’s log, stardate 19:25.9.
Instruments indicate a giant cosmic storm approaching. Cannot escape it. Only hope is to minimize casualties and damages! The plan is to reduce the impact of the crash by not opposing the mammoth force.
Energy waves from the storm penetrated shields and cracked the forward secondary hull. Afterward, Spock led a repair crew outside, driving a mobile laser welder to seal a fissure and secure the ship to travel to the nearest repair base, which was on Earth’s moon.
Leonard McCoy invited James T. Kirk to accompany him to visit his daughter, an assistant professor at Urey University. After they’d eaten lunch, Barbara McCoy showed them a massive bearlike vrell. Mature vrell relay thoughts telepathically. As Kirk walked with Barbara, she heard Kirk think about asking her on a date, and he heard a thought from her that she already had a date.
Captain’s personal log.
Dr. McCoy’s daughter did accept my theatre invitation! It was while we were enjoying the Xanathian comedy, “Bride of Three Worlds”, that the trouble began with the giant vrell!
At the university ampitheatre, sadistic guard Spencer whipped the vrell. The vrell lashed back, swiped Spencer’s narco-dart gun and broke free. Fellow guard Clagg retreated and called for reinforcements as the other guard was crushed. Barbara McCoy was paged at the theater.
Meanwhile, Scott shared drinks with his friend Jigo at the Engineer’s Club. They caught sight of Red Garvin, a former Enterprise crewman. On the planet Orthoo, Garvin had been suspected of stealing a sacred ruby, and Kirk had kicked him off the ship. Scott overheard Garvin plotting to sabotage the Enterprise, but Garvin caught Scott and knocked him unconscious before he could take action.
At Galileo Tower, the vrell was being fired on by armed hovercraft. Barbara climbed up the tower to calm the vrell. It recognized her. She reached out anxiously, but too far, and fell over the stairs. The vrell leaped and caught her, then carried her to Kirk with a final, mortal effort. Before it died, it relayed a telepathic message to Kirk from Scott.
On the Enterprise, Garvin and two accomplices sneaked into his old cabin. He retrieved the stolen ruby, which had been hidden behind a ventilation grid, and planted a bomb. As the criminals disembarked, however, Kirk and Leonard McCoy arrived. The officers were able to capture Garvin and his two accomplices, recover the ruby, and disable the bomb.
