Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) is an American science fiction television series created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller. The fourth series in the Star Trek media franchise, it originally aired in syndication from January 3, 1993, to June 2, 1999, spanning 176 episodes over seven seasons. Set in the 24th century, when Earth is part of a United Federation of Planets, its narrative is centered on the eponymous space station Deep Space Nine, located adjacent to a wormhole connecting Federation territory to the Gamma Quadrant on the far side of the Milky Way galaxy. DS9 is commanded by Commander Benjamin Sisko. During Deep Space Nine’s run, various episode novelizations and tie-in video games were produced. After the show ended, various novels and comics continued the crew’s adventures. Outside its line of novels, DS9 has been published in several comic books published by Malibu Comics, Wildstorm Comics, Marvel Comics and IDW.
Now, Malibu Comics presents, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Hearts and Minds. Stardate 47295.9 – An impending war between the Klingons and the Cardassians with the denizens of the Starfleet space station Deep Space Nine caught in the middle. The Klingons believe they have been attacked by the Cardassians and stand ready to retaliate, while the Cardassians insist that they bear no ill will toward the Klingons. It’s volatile mix, and DS9’s Commander Benjamin Sisko has his hands full as each race’s fleet is poised to fire at will.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “For the Glory of the Empire”, A fleet of Klingon battle cruisers and destroyers arrives at DS9. Their commander informs Sisko that they will protect DS9 in the war with the Cardassians. Sisko learns about the Klingon ship destroyed in the Gamma Quadrant and informs Starfleet. The Federation dispatches a Betazoid negotiator to resolve the conflict and instructs Sisko to hold things together until his arrival. Sisko sends Dax, Bashir, and a Klingon officer to the Gamma Quadrant to find the destroyed vessel’s flight recorder. Meanwhile, Quark is taking over the station’s comm channels to advertise his bar and a mysterious woman worms her way into his confidence. Shortly after Gul Dukat arrives at DS9, the Betazoid mediator arrives and his ship explodes, leaving Sisko to deal with angry Klingons and Cardassians.
