Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is an American science fiction television series set in the Star Trek universe in the Milky Way galaxy, in the years 2369–2375. In contrast to other Star Trek TV series, it primarily takes place on a space station rather than a starship, so as not to have two series with starships in the same time period; the series ran concurrently with Star Trek: The Next Generation during its first two seasons and with Star Trek: Voyager for the remainder of its run. Deep Space Nine premiered in 1993 and ran for seven seasons until 1999. Although rooted in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe, it was the first Trek spin-off created without Roddenberry’s direct involvement.
Now, Malibu Comics presents, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Hearts and Minds. Stardate 47295.9 An impending war between the Klingons and the Cardassians with the denizens of the Starfleet space station Deep Space Nine caught in the middle. The Klingons believe they have been attacked by the Cardassians and stand ready to retaliate, while the Cardassians insist that they bear no ill will toward the Klingons. It’s volatile mix, and DS9’s Commander Benjamin Sisko has his hands full as each race’s fleet is poised to fire at will.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “For the Glory of the Empire”, A fleet of Klingon battle cruisers and destroyers arrives at DS9. Their commander informs Sisko that they will protect DS9 in the war with the Cardassians. Sisko learns about the Klingon ship destroyed in the Gamma Quadrant and informs Starfleet. The Federation dispatches a Betazoid negotiator to resolve the conflict and instructs Sisko to hold things together until his arrival. Sisko sends Dax, Bashir, and a Klingon officer to the Gamma Quadrant to find the destroyed vessel’s flight recorder. Meanwhile, Quark is taking over the station’s comm channels to advertise his bar and a mysterious woman worms her way into his confidence. Shortly after Gul Dukat arrives at DS9, the Betazoid mediator arrives and his ship explodes, leaving Sisko to deal with angry Klingons and Cardassians.
Next in issue #2, “On the Edge of Armageddon”, While Sisko keeps the Klingon and Cardassian delegations from each other’s throats, Odo and O’Brien investigate the explosion which destroyed the negotiator’s ship. Maura offers to buy Quark’s bar. Dax, Bashir, and Koleth arrive at Keltar, the last reported stop of the K’Tang in the Gamma Quadrant. The Klingons taking leave on Keltar direct the investigation towards Caldonia 3, a planet populated by cut-throats and mercenaries. Upon arrival, the local “godfather” insists that the K’Tang was destroyed because they went into the Abyss, where the dead spirits go to rest. Back on DS9, Klingons and Cardassians go beyond threats and Maura makes Quark an offer he can’t refuse.
Next in issue #3, “Into the Abyss”, Quark asks Odo for protection from Maura. Odo instructs Quark to go ahead and sell the bar. Dax, Bashir, and Koleth begin searching for the K’Tang in an area of the Gamma Quadrant known as the Abyss. While the Cardassians prepare for war, Quark concludes the sale of his bar and Odo sneaks aboard Maura’s ship. Quark enlists Morn to check the cargo containers that Maura was transporting. In the Abyss, evidence proving that Cardassians didn’t destroy the K’Tang is found. Sisko gives the Klingon and Cardassian delegations an ultimatum. Quark finds Romulan disruptors in Maura’s cargo. The away team’s investigation leads them to a planet wracked by ion storms. They land, hoping to find K’Tang survivors, but find Romulans instead.
Finally in issue #4, “Masters of War”, Dax, Bashir, and Koleth are separated and imprisoned by their Romulan captors. Kira arrests and questions Maura about her smuggling activities. The Romulan commander explains his plan to set the Klingons and Cardassians at each other’s throats so the the Romulan Empire can gain a foothold in the Gamma Quadrant. Sisko is forced to use his runabouts to protect Cardassian ships from Klingons. Odo arrives at the Romulan base aboard Maura’s ship and helps the away team escape. They arrive back at DS9 in time to prevent a Klingon-Cardassian war, with the Romulans in pursuit. The Klingons gleefully take their revenge upon the Romulan ship.
