Touted as a sequel to the original television episode, “Mirror, Mirror,” this one-shot is a worthy addition to the Star Trek legend. Captain Kirk pronounced the ideology of the Empire as illogical before returning to the appropriate universe. Thus, this is where the original story concluded and this one-shot begins. Under normal circumstances the Enterprise crew are models of integrity and morality. However, in the parallel universe, one observes that the same characters routinely utilize ambition and treachery without remorse. For example, Marlena’s expedient alliance to ensure her position as the captain’s consort and Spock’s deft manipulation of the crew are classic Machiavellian traits. Further complicating the situation is a Klingon war party acting as a hungry pack of wolves searching for easy prey, more precisely, unwary Empire starships.
Story/Spoilers
In the Mirror Universe, the ruthless Mister Spock arrests Captain Kirk for failure to obey an order, even though he knows Kirk was temporarily transported to a parallel universe and replaced by his counterpart. Marlena betrays Kirk by giving Spock the secret of the destructive Tantalus Field, which Spock uses to obliterate a Klingon fleet. Kirk, Sulu, and Uhura work to overthrow Spock, but the Vulcan triumphs and kills Kirk, permanently winning the command for himself.
