To Boldly Go Were No One Has Gone Before.
Star Trek is an American space opera media franchise based on the science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The first television series, simply called Star Trek and now referred to as “The Original Series”, debuted in 1966 and aired for three seasons on the television network NBC. It followed the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise, a space exploration vessel, built by the United Federation of Planets in the twenty-third century. The Star Trek canon of the franchise includes The Original Series, an animated series, five spin-off television series, the film franchise, and further adaptations in several media.

Now, IDW presents, the most important “lost” tale of the Star Trek saga to be told: The final mission of the original Starship Enterprise and her crew. What prompts Mr. Spock and Doctor McCoy to retire from Starfleet? What earns Kirk his promotion to Admiral? And what is the mystery of Archenar-IV that threatens to tear the Federation itself apart? All will be revealed in this five-issue miniseries, with appearances by fan-favorite characters, Gary Mitchell, Lee Kelso, and Dr. Piper in this special opening chapter. From the first issue at the very beginning of The Original Series to the tail end of their five-year mission.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1B, The USS Enterprise’s (NCC-1701) final mission begins with what appears to be a flashback to an early mission during the five year voyage. It’s stardate 1136.2, the Enterprise is part of a First Contact mission with the spiders of Archernar IV, and as Kirk states in his Captain’s Log, “I look forward to this mission… for the opportunity to observe the Enterprise crew in action. We’ll be out here for the next five years together.” From where the story begins – First Contact, flashing back to the beginning of things, to where the story ends, a tale the spider civilization as relates to the Federation in the future…  with the original crew of the Enterprise in the middle of the mix!
