Featuring Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise!
Writer: Michael Jan Friedman
Artists: Pablo Marcos & Rafael Gallur
Colorist: Tom McCraw
Letterer: Bob Pinaha
Editor: Robert Greenberger
All Covers by: Adam Hughes & Karl Story
In Star Trek: The Modala Imperative, the Enterprise travels to the planet Modala to investigate its peaceful manner of planetary government. A closer look, however, reveals a world under a disturbing totalitarian rule. Moreover, the Modalan government has been provided with weaponry of off-world manufacture – but how, and by whom? Captain Kirk and Ensign Chekov take it upon themselves to investigate…and the answers they uncover are both ugly…and terrifying.
Early in the Enterprise crew’s mission, Captain Kirk is ordered to return to the planet Modala, a world he first explored under Captain Pike’s command, to see if the world is finally ready for membership in the United Federation of Planets. The situation has changed quite a bit, as one faction of the planet has somehow taken over with the assistance of alien weapons. A young, inexperienced Ensign Chekhov must prove himself at Kirk’s side during a time of upheaval and revolution. When the pair go missing, Spock and McCoy have to rescue them – all without violating the Prime Directive.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “A Little Seasoning”, Captain’s log, stardate 3012.4. It’s been ten years now since I last visited the planet Modala — the natives’ name for Beta Damoron V. Of course, I was only a lieutenant then, and the Enterprise was someone else’s ship. Chris Pike’s, to be precise.
Next in issue #2, “Tools of Tyranny”, Kirk and Chekov meet the rebels of Modala, only to discover that just by being involved, they’ve threatened the development of an entire planet. Then Spock and McCoy plan a rescue mission for Kirk and Chekov, who are trapped in an alien prison.
Next in issue #3, “The Price of Freedom”, Spock and McCoy help the USS Enterprise located Kirk and Chekov in their prison where they have helped the other prisoners engineer a massive escape. During the escape, the Enterprise loses track of them, and Spock and McCoy are captured by the prison guards.
Finally in issue #4, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, The rebels help Kirk and Chekov rescue Spock and McCoy from execution. The landing party beams back to the USS Enterprise but does not learn where the advanced weaponrt comes from.
