Star Trek: The Next Generation is an American science-fiction television series in the Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry that ran from 1987 to 1994. It follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise-D and its crew set in the Alpha Quadrant (nearby regions of the Milky Way galaxy). Star Trek: The Next Generation was the first live action Star Trek television series since the original Star Trek went off the air in 1969. The first episode takes place in the year 2364, 99 years after the start of the five-year mission described in the original series, which began in 2265. Star Trek: The Next Generation featured a new crew that starred (for the majority of its seven-year broadcast run) Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Jonathan Frakes as Commander William Riker, Brent Spiner as Lt Commander Data, Michael Dorn as Lieutenant Worf, LeVar Burton as Lt Commander Geordi La Forge, Marina Sirtis as counselor Deanna Troi, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, and a new starship Enterprise.
Now, DC Comics presents, Star Trek: The Next Generation! These are the first adventures of Picard, Data, Worf, and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Upon arriving at the planet Syntagus Theluv, the Enterprise is contacted by what appear to be the friendly aliens living there, yet both the Enterprise and the away team are fired upon…
Story/Spoilers:
In issue #1, “…Where No One Has Gone Before!”, Captain’s log, stardate 41187.5 The USS Enterprise slices through the pitch thickness of an unmapped sector like a shaft. Her own legend, and those of her predecessors, serving us as fuel for this and all her subsequent missions. Manned by Federation officers and crew, who engineer each step of our quest for understanding… propelling us further and deeper than ever before—in a seemingly endless thirst for knowledge and harmony. Traveling with us, the constant reminder of why we’re out here… families, most notably children. The generations of the future who deserve to know what’s out here in order to press on. Their very presence is my pressure to perform—our need to succeed. That’s what drives each and every one of my bridge crew. The USS Enterprise makes contact with the Theluvians, the native inhabitants of Syntagus Theluv. Their greetings are friendly, but the ship is suddenly fired upon from the planet. An away team transports down but is also attacked. The away team subdues their foes, and all are picked up by a Theluvian ship, where they learn that the Theluvians age backwards – the “adults” who attacked them are actually children playing a game, and the “children” who picked them up are adults.
Next in issue #2, “Spirit in the Sky!”, Captain’s log, stardate 42120.3 The USS Enterprise and crew are en route from Syntagus Theluv to Federation Starbase 33 for standard debriefing and maintenance. We had hoped to be there before the holidays were upon us… but you might say that fate’s lights have been against us most of the way. During a Christmas celebration, the Enterprise encounters an alien race called the Creeg, and invites them to participate in the festivities. Once aboard the ship, however, the Creeg attack the crew and chase after an energy being they have been pursuing. The aliens have a change of heart when the spirit, which resembles Santa Claus, gives everyone it touches feelings of joy and good cheer. Captain’s log, stardate 42122.7 Whatever the galaxy traveling entity we encountered was, it left both the Enterprise and Creeg crews with more — much more than we could’ve ever given it. I only hope it lasts into the new year.
Next in issue #3, “Q Factor”, Captain’s log, stardate 42120.3 Having successfully introduced the Creeg—a race of energy siphons—to our Federation on Tarod, the Enterprise makes its way on impulse power to Faltos, the first planet outside the charted periphery of Sector 902. That is, of course, if Faltos exists at all. She has always been more legend than certainty. Embarking on a newly issued assignment always leads to a mixture of emotions for my crew—most paradoxically anticipation and trepidation. Never knowing yet needing to know what lies ahead drives us—and caution, governed by reason, keeps us returning home time after time. But to do any good at all in this day and age, the Federation needs factual information—and it’s our job to bring it back. In this instance Faltos is the unknown that lies ahead—and barring any side-tracking, the Enterprise will tell the Federation what it needs to know by 42150. Tasha Yar and Wesley Crusher are playing a war games scenario throughout the decks of the Enterprise. Captain Jean-Luc Picard discovers them and admonishes them both for their seemingly reckless behavior. Tasha recollects how little opportunity she had to play as a child growing up on Turkana IV. Soon after, Picard calls Tasha to the bridge where she finds that the ship has come upon an unidentified alien spacecraft. Worf cannot pick up any sensor readings, but the Betazoid Deanna Troi insists that there are lifeforms aboard. Picard has Commander William T. Riker assemble an away team to inspect the ship. Aboard the ship, the party is attacked by an invisible person or persons. This shadowy specter takes out security officers Gibson and Hahn and begins strangling Commander Riker. Tasha Yar loses her nerve and refuses to fire upon the assailant out of fear of injuring Riker. The crew are immediately beamed back aboard the Enterprise and Riker is taken to sickbay. While Captain Picard tries to make sense of all of this, he receives a visitation by the most unwelcome of guests—Q. Q tries to convince Picard that the crew of the alien ship are evil and that he should waste no time obliterating them. Q’s constant badgering irritates Picard, but he refuses to give Q any reason to feel magnanimous. Moments later, the alien ship fires on the Enterprise. The ship takes a direct hit to the lower decks and Picard is forced to separate the saucer section from the secondary hull. They eventually find a way to pinpoint the life forms aboard the opposing ship and bring them over to the Enterprise. They are actually humans who had found their way onto the enemy ship but had no idea how the ship functioned. Additionally, Picard learns that these humans made a special arrangement with Q—one that would have afforded them great wealth had they agreed to attack the Enterprise. Q, however, has not held up his end of the bargain. Adding to the intensity, Data informs the Captain that they have lost track of the ship’s saucer section.
Next in issue #4, “Q’s Day”, Captain’s log, stardate 42128.3 Having successfully disabled the aggressive alien vessel before us, we have taken her surprisingly human crew aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. While under attack by this unclassified carrier, we were forced to jettison our craft’s saucer section. Usually a simple standard safety procedure, designed to spare the lives of our civilian passengers, I’m afraid I may have doomed everyone aboard her when I gave the order to initiate the maneuver, in this particular instance.
Next in issue #5, “Q Effects!”, Captain’s log, stardate 41753.3 On a fairly routine mission to document the questioned existence of the legendary planet Faltos in Sector 902, the Enterprise and her crew encountered a renegade starship and the omnipotent entity Q. As a safety precaution, the saucer section of our ship — along with non-commissioned civilian passengers — was jettisoned. Subsequently, the saucer was lost in space for several hours and has since — inexplicably — returned and joined the stardrive section of the Enterprise. Simultaneously — and perhaps as a direct corollary to the saucer’s return — Q has discovered himself stripped of any and all powers he once might have posessed. Distraught, Q attempted suicide. But, in a struggle to prevent such an action, Lieutenant j.g. Geordi La Forge has been struck down by phaser fire meant to destroy Q…
Finally in issue #6, “Here Today”, Captain’s log, stardate 41753.8 The U.S.S. Enterprise is on the verge of space sector 902 and on the verge of documenting the existence of the legendary planet Faltos. Or not… if it is indeed a mythical place simply conjured up for ancient fables and fanciful fairy tales, as some fear. It had taken our ship several standard months to reach this rim of charted space, and it was now only a matter of hours before we’d know whether or not the Federation had wasted its time on this mission.
