Star Trek: The Next Generation is an American science-fiction television series in the Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry that ran from 1987 to 1994. It follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise-D and its crew set in the Alpha Quadrant (nearby regions of the Milky Way galaxy). Star Trek: The Next Generation was the first live action Star Trek television series since the original Star Trek went off the air in 1969. The first episode takes place in the year 2364, 99 years after the start of the five-year mission described in the original series, which began in 2265. Star Trek: The Next Generation featured a new crew that starred (for the majority of its seven-year broadcast run) Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Jonathan Frakes as Commander William Riker, Brent Spiner as Lt Commander Data, Michael Dorn as Lieutenant Worf, LeVar Burton as Lt Commander Geordi La Forge, Marina Sirtis as counselor Deanna Troi, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, and a new starship Enterprise.
DC Comics presents Star Trek: The Next Generation – Ill Wind! Captain Picard and the Enterprise are sent on a mission where they are charged with overseeing security at a solar sailing event. Picard has always fancied himself a history buff and is delighted to see the ancient sport played out. The fun ends abruptly when the crew is confronted with the fact that they have to keep peace among the many different races represented in the sport. Everybody’s a suspect as sabotage reigns.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Stardate 47960.3, Sinister forces have a political agenda that threatens the life of a planetary leader and the outcome of a Federation-wide spacecraft race. Picard and his crew must avert disaster and unlock the secret hidden within a nearby star. The Enterprise is assigned the task of providing security and assistance for the Federation Cup, a solar sailing competition. Complicating matters is the presence of the Mestral, a head-of-state with many enemies, teams from species with vastly different definitions of the term “compete”, and an unstable star. Picard admits to a long-standing interest in solar sailing as well.
Next in issue #2, Stardate 47961.2, A suspicious explosion threatens to stop the Federation Cup race before it’s even begun. Believing terrorists may be behind it, the crew of the Enterprise begins their investigation. Adding to Picard’s growing unease is the fact that the support ship of the Mestral – an alien head of state – is missing. The Federation Cup race begins. The Enterprise detects and retrieves a bomb on one of the yachts before any damage is done. The Mestral’s support craft has failed to arrive. Picard discusses the matter with the Mestral and learns more about her. Andrew’s Star begins emitting irregular flares. As competition heats up, the Mestral’s consort tries to convince her to give up her title and return to a normal life.
Next in issue #3, Stardate 47962.1, A bomb planted aboard one of the ships competing in the Federation Cup is just one of the mysteries facing the crew of the Enterprise. There is also the missing ship of the Mestral’s, a prominent alien head-of-state. Plus, the star that fuels this race of solar-sailing craft is acting strangely…and it seems to be affecting Counselor Troi. LaForge discovers that the being who planted a bomb on the yacht was a Carrig, but Picard chooses to do nothing with the information unless the Carrighae team should win the race. While Picard ponders some of the decisions he has made in his life, Troi continues to suffer from lack of sleep. Dr. Crusher finds a phantom EEG trace interfering with Troi’s sleep cycle but has no explanation. Aboard the Mestral’s yacht, a crewman attempts an assassination and the Mestral’s consort reveals his agenda.
Finally in issue #4, Stardate 47962.6, The plot against the Mestral is realized, and the crew of the Enterprise must counter the disruptive effects of a massive solar flare to save her from assassination. Now Riker and the Away Team must sail the Mestral’s yacht through the dangerous eruptions of the nearby star. The Mestral is stunned to learn that her conssort has betrayed her but manages to open an audio channel allowing the Enterprise to learn of her situation. Riker leads a rescue team as the nearby star begins to flare, preventing a return to the Enterprise. The Mestral’s missing support ship arrives to pick up the conspirators and the Enterprise must prevent them from harming any of the yachts. While the intrigue unravels, everyone is witness to a remarkable rebirth.
