Chief medical officer’s log, stardate 3498.07.

The Enterprise is in orbit around Vulcan. It’s been one of those days. McCoy is infatuated with Doctor T’Han, a Vulcan visiting the Enterprise, but he seems unable to connect with her. Frustrated, he shares a bottle of Saurian brandy with James T. Kirk in his quarters after their duty shift. The next day in sickbay, McCoy and Christine Chapel demonstrate a particular surgical procedure with a Vulcan patient, as T’Han observes and assists. T’Han realizes McCoy is distracted, but he completes the operation successfully. That evening, T’Han attends dinner with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. During the conversation, Spock says the doctor is ordinarily an excellent surgeon, in case she thought he’d faltered. McCoy is angered by the comment, which confuses T’Han. She thanks them for dinner and heads back to her quarters. McCoy catches up to her in the corridor and tries to charm her again, but she says she was warned that human emotionalism hindered efficiency, and retires to write her report on the procedure for the Federation Science Council. McCoy asks Spock for advice on how to court Dr. T’Han. Spock recommends that he give up, to spare himself further embarrassment.

Crusher and Yar discuss visiting the freighter Orpheus, which had asked for a doctor. Crusher promises if it’s not for a medical emergency, she’ll cook them dinner. They land in its shuttle bay aboard the shuttlepod Pike and are greeted by two members of the crew. They explain that although a CO and many other crew are listed on the manifest, they don’t recall any of them ever having been aboard. They say everyone’s on edge because of their cargo: a prototype space saver, which stores cargo in a dimensional pocket outside of the prime reality. They show Crusher the space saver, and when she touches it, she disappears. Yar asks why the device is operating if they only have permits to transport it, and encourages them to confess what they’ve done, since Captain Jean-Luc Picard sent her there alone to find out what happened to their missing crew. Meanwhile, inside the space saver Crusher meets all of the missing crew, including Piper Baring, the ship’s CO. Baring explains that an engineer accidentally activated the device, and since then it has slowly been capturing ship’s personnel. Once something is taken out of the universe, it goes missing, including peoples’ memories of it. When the dimensional pocket’s edges contact the Orpheus, captured people can interact somewhat with reality. Because the crew have forgotten the people inside, however, knocking on walls probably makes the ship seem haunted. Crusher realizes that not every trace of them was erased, since their names were on the manifest. The next time it’s possible to interact with the ship, the captured personnel work together, writing “I’m cooking” on the cargo bay floor. Yar sees the message, recalls her conversation with Crusher, and realizes what’s happened. Quickly they open the space saver, and the captured crew are freed. Yar has the cargo bay sealed and the ship placed in quarantine until protocols are developed to investigate further. Crusher says there’s still one problem: she’s not a good cook.

Second Officer Janeway’s personal log. Stardate 32641.2.

The Billings has been invited to Arali Prime to meet with the Adegeda, a friendly but planet-bound people.

I have the honor of commanding the away team that will make first contact. I must admit, I’m a little nervous about the mission. The Adegeda’s planet has a particularly opaque atmosphere – not only does it prohibit beaming down, but sensor scans have returned bizarre readings. We don’t quite know what to expect when we reach the surface. And then there’s the security officer for this assignment, Mr. Tuvok. The last time we were on a mission I commanded, he dressed me down in front of three Starfleet admirals for failing to observe proper tactical procedure. Here’s hoping this little adventure goes better than that one.

The team’s shuttle safely traverses the planet’s thick atmosphere and lands at the designated coordinates. The surface is bleak, but a few towering, green crystalline structures are nearby. The crystals change shape, reforming into the Adegedan ambassador and associates, and they welcome the away team. A loud sound and red light flash burst across the landscape, and Janeway asks if a storm is due. The ambassador’s response is gibberish, but Ensign Probert confirms that the universal translator is working properly. Another loud burst occurs, and suddenly two huge airships above them are engaged in battle. The landing party flees from underneath the battle site when another burst flashes. Now the team is running across a lava-covered landscape near an erupting volcano, with the airships nowhere in sight. As the team tries to reach their shuttle, Janeway looks back and notices that the ambassador’s group seems serene, as if they are in a safer location. She notes that each flash bring with it a different environment. There is another flash, and now a wrecked airship is plummeting directly above them. They run as fast as they can. Moments before impact, however, another flash brings them back to the environment they saw when they first landed. Realizing that they have to depart before they shift back to the environment with the crashing airship, Janeway apologizes to the ambassador, promising to figure out a better way to communicate once they return to the ship. The ambassador understands, and the shuttle takes off moments before the environment changes to a large explosion. Janeway and Tuvok discuss the encounter on the trip back, theorizing that the planet shifts dimensionally with each light flash and is not entirely within their reality. Tuvok is curious to know how such an environment would affect the societal evolution of the natives.

Story takes place one year after the death of Jadzia Dax, after Worf has become an ambassador for the Klingon Empire. On the anniversary of Jadzia’s death, Ambassador Worf is in a foul mood. Ezri Dax seeks Worf out to share their memories of Jadzia, but Worf does not want to deal with his feelings of loss. Ezri Dax visits Ambassador Worf on Qo’nos to commemorate Jadzia’s death. Worf hasn’t forgotten the date, and lets her accompany him on a journey to the coastal settlement of Korvann. He explains that his task will be to discipline a Klingon liaison who got into trouble on Andor, claimed diplomatic immunity, and was recalled. He confesses that his duties have become less advisory and more managerial lately. Ezri asks if he regrets taking the post, but he avoids answering. The two unpack bat’leths at the settlement conference’s arena. Ezri provokes him into sparring, and Worf envisions Jadzia battling him. He admits to missing Jadzia every day, and to having left Deep Space 9 to distance himself from Ezri. They agree that this posting isn’t where he should be. The liaison arrives, and Worf smacks him to the ground. Worf says the man has no honor, and they “discuss” how he will apologize for his infractions. Later, Ezri and Worf watch the sunset. He jokes that a good punishment would be for the liaison to take his place as ambassador. Worf resolves to contact Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Chancellor Martok. Then they share some blood wine.
