Now, IDW presents, Star Trek: Year Four. Space. The final frontier. This is the voyage of the Starship Enterprise. Her five-year mission to explore strange new worlds. It continues here, with the launch of Year Four in the Original Series’ five-year mission. Boldly going where no man has gone before are writer David Tischman (Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Space Between) and artist Steve Conley (Astounding Space Thrills). Up first, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise discover the Strand, the multi-planet construct of a dead civilization, run by a brilliant genetic scientist who’s obsessed with repopulating it. When Kirk discovers the scientist’s secret, his creations revolt, forcing Kirk to make a hard decision and pushing the Enterprise into the crossfire
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1A, The Enterprise encounters an immense planetary mass, capable of supporting 800 billion inhabitants, with only twenty life signs. Beaming down to investigate, Kirk finds Dr. Othello Beck, renowned medical researcher and Phlox prize winner, working in a vast scientific laboratory left by a dead civilization. With Beck are the B’nai, creatures he created to assist in the lab. Kirk and McCoy discover that Beck’s ethics are questionable. He’s hiding a terrible secret which ends tragically.
Next in issue #2A, The Enterprise detours to Aarak 3 to replenish their supply of dilithium crystals. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are entertained by King Marat when terrorists attack and nearly succeed in killing the king and his guests. Kirk learns that rapid change since the Federation began buying dilithium has split Aarakaian society. Spock believes that overthrow of the government is inevitable. While Kirk decides whether or not to intervene, Scotty gets some assistance installing new dilithium crystals from a very attractive Aarakaian with more on her mind than starship engines. While the Aarakaians play out an elaborate deception, the crew of the Enterprise answers with a little deception of their own.
Next in issue #3A, Captain James T. Kirk becomes suspicious of his crew after returning from the devastated colony on Phi-11. Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy try to reassure him that nothing’s wrong – unless Kirk’s two most trusted friends are in on the plot, too. What has infected the crew, and how – and who’s left to help Kirk regain control of the ship?
Next in issue #4A, On Viden 9, the U.S.S. Enterprise encounters a planet similar to 21st century Earth, where the population has a never-ending appetite for entertainment, and people will do anything for fame. When Captain Kirk and his crew become media sensations, the competing networks that control Viden’s government won’t let them leave, unless Kirk agrees to a deadly finale.
Next in issue #5A, The U.S.S. Enterprise is dispatched to observe a Quark Gluon Plasma experiment at the Gemini Science Station – in orbit between two suns – in an effort to learn more about the beginning of the universe. But the formation of a black hole from the experiment’s outcome means eminent danger for Spock and Dr. McCoy who are stranded on the debilitated science station.
Finally in issue #6A, As Kirk and the crew investigate the disappearance of the USS Pasteur, a trail of debris leads the USS Enterprise to an automated facility on a lifeless, desert planet in the Gobi system. A landing party finds robotic nannies caring for a computer-controlled nursery of alien babies – which Dr. McCoy’s analysis proves to be the final survivors of the planet’s dead civilization. But when an ensign disappears, and clues of the Pasteur’s fate uncover the facility’s startling secret, the computer reveals it maternal instincts – using its awesome power to defend its children – endangering the Enterprise and forcing Kirk and the landing party to fight for their lives.
