Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas.  The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and  finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.

Blackthorne Publishing presents another in its series of 3D comics, this one featuring a new Star Wars adventure. Following the events of A New Hope, Luke returns to Tatooine to settle his uncle’s affairs, and gets caught up in another adventure. Luke and the Rebellion seek a new hidden base, and investigate the ice world of Hoth. But the mission is complicated by the price on Han’s head. Later, Luke’s discovery of a secret society of Force users leads to one of his first battles with Darth Vader. Published on the 10th anniversary of the first movie’s release.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, A squadron of TIE fighters bears down on the Millennium Falcon as it soars through outer space. Luke Skywalker mans the quad laser cannon while Han Solo jockeys the ship around in a circle, causing several of the TIE fighters to collide with one another. After dispatching the Imperials, Luke asks Han to take him to Tatooine so that he may tidy up some unfinished business. He visits the shallow graves of his aunt and uncle, Beru and Owen Lars. He has inherited their moisture farm but has no plans on maintaining ownership of it. He now allows the Force to guide him in search of a suitable being with whom he may leave the farm. Luke and the others rent a landspeeder and travel to Chalmun’s Spaceport Cantina. The Force guides Luke to a corner table, where a disgruntled alien named Throgg sits, slowly sipping a drink. Luke learns that Throgg was once a moisture farmer, but the Galactic Empire took control of his farm, forcing him to flee Tatooine. He has only recently returned to the desert planet. Luke offers Throgg the deed to the Lars moisture farm, but Throgg does not trust Luke’s intentions. Meanwhile, several of the cantina patrons recognize Han Solo and Chewbacca and a barroom brawl explodes inside the dimly lit building. Luke leaves the deed with Throgg and jumps into the action. The heroes rush outside only to discover a squad of Imperial stormtroopers marching the street. The Imperials open fire on them, forcing Luke and Han to execute a hasty retreat. They eventually get back to the Millennium Falcon and blast off into outer space. Later, Throgg takes the deed and visits the Lars moisture farm. Despite his earlier gruffness, he is supremely grateful for this fantastic opportunity to restart his life.

Next in issue #2, “Havoc on Hoth”, Immediately following their adventures on Tatooine, Luke, Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO return to the Yavin system in the Millennium Falcon. However, they find the Rebellion’s base on Yavin 4 surrounded by an Imperial Fleet led by Admiral Quist and headed by Darth Vader. Han is able to pull off some fancy flying to escape and land on the world while Quist is subsequently executed by Vader for his failure. Arriving at an old Yavin Base, Luke and the rest assume the Rebels have fled, due to it being abandoned. Luckily, the group is able to catch the fleet at a secret rendezvous where Princess Leia informs the group that they need to find a new base. Han suggests the ice world of Hoth, a world which the Empire is sure to overlook. The group leave to scout the unfamiliar territory, and after arriving, they use their landspeeder to search for a large ice cavern to serve as a suitable base. Unfortunately, the search leads to an encounter with the smuggler Salmakk who tries to claim the bounty on Han’s head. Fleeing in their landspeeder, the group accidentally flies right into the smuggler’s headquarters. Luke uses his lightsaber to cut stalactites off of the ceiling of the base causing the cave to begin collapsing on itself. The Rebels are able to escape just in time as Salmakk and his cohorts are trapped under the rubble. Luke and Han are happy to have escaped, but realize that they still have to find a base for the displaced Rebellion.

Finally in issue #3, ”The Dark Side of Dantooine”, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa are on a mission to Dantooine to secure supplies for their new base on the planet Hoth. Along with R2-D2, the group meet up with an Ortolan Merchant to buy weapons. As Leia negotiates the deal, Luke is accosted by a group of thugs who lead him away from the meeting. The leader of the group of thugs orders his subordinate Abel and several other thugs to lead Luke to the roof for reasons unknown. When they arrive, Luke surprises the band with his quickness and slays them with his lightsaber. After the encounter, Luke begins to hear a voice beckoning him to follow deeper into the building. Luke eventually discovers the voices, a race of Force-sensitive people that call themselves the Fairfolk. Unknown to Luke, the Fairfolk are working for Darth Vader to trap potentially dangerous Force-sensitives. Oblivious to the Fairfolk’s insidious methods, Luke requests that the Fairfolk train him in the Force to complete the training he had started under Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Fairfolk agree, and as Luke grabs the Fairfolk leaders hand, he is connected with Darth Vader who plans to use the Fairfolk to train Luke in the dark side. Luke begins to train, but the Fairfolk are incredibly antagonistic, frustrating Luke with their claims that he cannot complete their difficult training. Luke lashes out with the dark side of the Force, immediately showing his power to the Fairfolk. Vader is pleased with Luke’s progress and appears to him in a vision, declaring that his true education is about to begin. The Fairfolk claim that Luke can defeat Vader, and the two meet in a duel. As Vader easily knocks Luke to the ground, the Fairfolk encourage Luke to tap into the dark side of the Force to defeat Vader. Luke listens to their advice and begins to push the Dark Lord back with his unbridled fury. However, just as it seems that Luke is about to strike down the vision of Vader and fall completely to the dark side, R2-D2 and Leia rush to the rescue, disrupting the “fatal” blow. R2 shocks the Fairfolk causing them to retreat while Leia tries to comfort Luke as the vision of Vader fades away. Luke, Leia, and R2 leave the planet with the highly needed supplies as Luke explains how dangerously close to the dark side he had gone. On the bridge of the Conqueror, Vader laments missing his chance to turn Skywalker but promises himself that the next time he has a chance he will not fail.
