A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
More than a hundred years have passed since the events in Return of the Jedi and the days of the New Jedi Order. There is a new evil gripping the galaxy, shattering a resurgent Empire and seeking to destroy the last of the Jedi. Even as their power is failing, the Jedi hold to one final hope – the last remaining heir to the Skywalker legacy!
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, “Broken – Part #1”, The Sith Lord, Darth Krayt, has made an alliance with the New Empire and has destroyed the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Now he has sent an assault team of Sith and Stormtroopers to finish off the remaining Jedi at the Academy on Ossus. Kol Skywalker and Wolf Sazen lead the Jedi against the invading Sith even though they are vastly outnumbered, Wolf Sazen orders the young Cade Skywalker and Shado Vao to take the younglings and flee Ossus on one of the Jedi Shuttles. When Cade objects and continues to fight, his father reminds him that a Jedi’s first duty is to preserve life and that Cade’s job was to protect the younglings. However, when Master Sazen is struck down by Darth Nihl, Cade defies his father’s orders and goes to join his father in the battle. Kol orders Cade to take Sazen and leave and though Cade is reluctant, he agrees and carries Sazen back to the shuttle. Sazen dies on the shuttle but Cade is unwilling to accept this and draws a tremendous amount of Force power to bring Sazen back to life. Meanwhile, back at the Temple, Kol is killed with Force lightning by Darth Nihl. Cade decides to avenge his father’s death and kill the remaining Sith on the planet but the shuttle is attacked by Imperial Fighters. Cade takes off after the Imperial Fighters in one of the Jedi X-83 TwinTail Fighters to buy time for the shuttle to escape but in the ensuing battle, Cade’s ship s destroyed. Sazen can feel that Cade is still alive but the remaining Imperial Fighters prevent them from searching for Cade.
Back on Coruscant, Roan Fel, the Emperor of the New Empire, holds a meeting with his Moffs and is told of the Jedi’s defeat on Ossus by Morlish Veed, but his briefing is interrupted by the appearance of Darth Krayt and his Sith followers. Fel, who thinks that the New Empire and the Sith are allies, is betrayed and killed by Krayt. Krayt proclaims himself the new Emperor of the galaxy and Morlish Veed swears his allegiance to Krayt. The rest of the Moffs immediately follow suit and Krayt’s self appointed position is solidified. As the Moffs leave, Veed complains to Nyna Calixte that Krayt has gone against the plan and made himself Emperor instead of appointing Veed. Calixte tells him that the future is unknown and that he may still become Emperor. After the Moffs have left, It is discovered that Roan Fel is still alive and the Krayt actually killed Roan Fel’s double. Krayt blames Darth Maladi for this mix-up and orders her and the other Sith to hunt down the remaining Jedi so that the true Roan Fel cannot gain the Jedi as allies. Krayt reveals that he is plagued by something that threatens his life and that he could sense a disturbance in the force when Ossus fell. Krayt promises to find the Jedi that was able to draw life back from death and to turn that person to the dark side.
Next in part #2, “Broken – Part #2”, It has been seven years since the Massacre at Ossus and Wolf Sazen has called together a few of the remaining Jedi, Shado Vao being among them, to the planet of Daluuj to discuss the future of the Jedi and to ask for their aid in finding Cade Skywalker but before any plans are made the Jedi are attacked by Sith. In the end, only Sazen and Vao are standing and Vao agrees to help Sazen find Cade and restore the Jedi Order.
On the planet Lok, an alien named Naxy Screeger sits in a cantina called Brogar’s Safe House. A pirate by the name of Rav is looking for him and Screeger is trying to buy his way into the cantina’s safe house. Cade Skywalker bursts into the cantina along with his partners Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue announcing themselves to be Bounty Hunters looking to collect the bounty on Screeger’s head. A Jedi in hiding by the name of Hosk Trey’lis believes that Cade is there for him and Force throws a table at Cade and Syn. Hosk makes a run for the door but is shot with a sleeping dart by Deliah. Hosk turns and Force pushes Deliah back but is taken down when Syn hits him with a thud-bug. Cade captures Screeger and is confronted by the Brogar for capturing someone that has paid for Brogar’s protection. Cade makes a deal with Brogar that he won’t tell the “Imps” that Brogar was sheltering a Jedi if Brogar allows them to take Screeger. Brogar agrees and Cade takes Hosk and Screeger back to his speeder. Hosk begs Cade not to turn him over to the Sith but Syn informs Hosk that he won’t find any pity from Cade and that Syn and Cade once worked for Rav the pirate.
On Coruscant, the Jedi Temple has been rebuilt but now serves as the Temple of the Sith. Darth Krayt observes a Sith Apprentice and orders her to kill her teacher Darth Ruyn. The Apprentice obeys without hesitation and kills Darth Ruyn. Krayt then names the Apprentice Darth Talon and makes her one of his Hands or personal assassins. Her first mission is to find the daughter of Roan Fel, Princess Marasiah, and capture her so that they can lure out Roan Fel. Darth Talon goes to the planet Socorro where she kills the Princess’ personal guard and teacher, an Imperial Knight by the name of Elke Vetter, and continues to search for the Princess who is fleeing with her personal handmaiden Astraal Vao. Marasiah feels Elke die in the Force and almost goes back to avenge her death but Astraal convinces her to do her duty and survive.
Next in part #3, “Broken – Part #3”, On the Planet Socorro, Cade Skywalker, Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue struggle to take the captured Jedi, Hosk Trey’lis to a pirate named Rav to collect the bounty on the Jedi as well as the bounty on Naxy Screeger. Hosk breaks free only to be tackled by Cade, causing them both to fall from a bridge. As they fall, Hosk senses that the Force is strong with Cade and that Cade could perhaps be a Jedi but Hosk is knocked unconscious when they hit the water. Cade drags Hosk out of the water and hands him and Screeger over to Rav who stands waiting on the shore. Rav stiffs Cade on the bounty and gives them just enough to refuel their shift and leave but as a “bonus,” Rav gives Cade three death sticks. Syn gets angry with Rav for stringing Cade along with the death sticks and Rav admits that he enjoys keeping Cade on a short leash. When Syn argues that he and Cade earned their freedom from Rav and that Rav actually owes them, Rav reminds Syn that it was Syn and Rav that found Cade amongst the ruins of the Jedi Academy on Ossus and the Rav didn’t owe either of them anything.
On Bastion, the former Emperor Roan Fel gains the support of the 501st Legion and with the help of the 501st’s Commander, Oron Jaeger, turns Bastion into his main base of operations. (in what is known as the Retake of Bastion) As Fel tells Jaeger that his acquisition of Bastion must remain a secret from Darth Krayt, Jaeger receives the transmission that the Imperial Mission on Soccorro is burning, Princess Marasiah is missing and her body guard, Elke Vetter has been slain. The Captain of the Fel’s Imperial Guard opts for an immediate three man rescue team to find the Princess but Fel forbids it. Fel explains that he cannot risk letting Krayt know that he is on Bastion and that the Princess was just a lure to get Fel out of hiding. Marasiah and her hand maiden, Astraal Vao flee from the Imperial Mission but their pursuer, Darth Talon, isn’t far behind. Astraal uses a public holocomm to contact her brother, Shado Vao and makes plans to meet him on Vendaxa.
Elsewhere on Soccorro, Cade has locked Syn and Deliah out of his ship, the Mynock, and is visited by the Force ghost of Luke Skywalker. Luke asks why Cade uses death sticks and Cade replies that they keep Luke away and dampen his Force abilities. Luke wonders why Cade gave up his training to become a Jedi when he has such a talent in the Force. Enough talent to bring his former master, Wolf Sazen, back from the dead. We learn that in bringing Sazen back, Cade partially fell into the dark side of the Force and that part of him enjoyed it. Luke reminds Cade that he knows more about the dark side than Cade does and that if Cade was at peace with himself and embraced his legacy he wouldn’t have to go there to draw so much energy. Cade asks Luke what’s so great about being a Jedi when history shows that it just gains you more trouble. Luke tells Cade that running away from his responsibilities won’t solve anything and Cade replies by threatening to shoot himself with his own blaster unless Luke left him alone. Luke leaves and Cade opens the hatch to let in Syn and Deliah blaming the wait on being in the shower. As Syn and Deliah begin to load their things onto the ship, Marasiah and Astraal come running towards the ship and demand that Cade take them with him. Cade asks them if they have creds and Marasiah attempts to use a Jedi mind trick on Cade. Cade questions Marasiah’s identity but the sudden appearance of Darth Talon coming at them on a swoop bike cuts him off. Cade allows Marasiah and Astraal to board and orders Syn and Deliah to make an emergency take-off.
Astraal tells Cade to take them to Vendaxa and Cade gives Marasiah and Astraal Deliah’s room, so, Deliah decides to bunk with Cade. Syn gets onto Cade for taking on passengers with no creds but Cade discovers the identity of Marasiah and decides to let her lead Cade to her father so that Cade can get the reward for saving the Princess and then turn her and her father over to the Sith for an even larger reward.
Next in part #4, “Broken – Part #4”, At the Imperial Base on Yinchorr, also serving as the Headquarters for the 407th Stormtrooper Division, Anson Trask attempts to find his squad, and has a run in with Darth Maleval. Sergeant Ran Harkas steps in and saves the “Noob” from the Sith’s wrath and takes him to Joker Squad, Company C, Battalion 9. There, Anson meets Jes Gistang, Hondo Karr and Vax Potorr. The troopers welcome him by inviting him to join the bet they have on how long he will live. Lieutenant Gil Cassel informs Joker Squad that Grand Admiral Veed and the Moff Council have ordered the termination of the 908th division on Borosk for defecting from the New Empire and joining the former Emperor Roan Fel and that it is Joker Squad’s job to see it done.
On Borosk, Joker Squad is assigned to capture and secure the gun and shield placements along the perimeter wall of the 908th’s Headquarters. After they secure the gun platform the troop is allowed to rest for the night. Anson and Jes talk about their reasons for signing up with The Empire and Jes goes on to tell the brief back stories of the other members in Joker Squad. Lieutenant Cassel is confronted by Darth Maleval who tells him that his idea of a truce with the 908th is out of the question and that an example will be made of the 908th. Hondo comes up behind Darth Maleval with a drawn blade and is subsequently Force thrown in a wall. As Maleval walks away, talk of joining the 908th or simply walking away from the fight arise but Sergeant Harkas reminds them that a soldiers duty is to complete the mission no matter the cost. One by one the members of Joker Squad agree.
The next day the squad breaches the main fortress of the 908th Headquarters and press into the main mess hall, were Vex steps on a mine and is killed. Jes is killed when enemy fire hits one of the power packs on her waist and Sergeant Harkas is severely wounded by the ensuing explosion. When the battle is over, Darth Maleval brings forth a bound 908th prisoner, Captain Jared Cassel, Lieutenant Cassel’s brother and orders Lieutenant Cassel to execute his own brother. The Lieutenant refuses and as Darth Maleval raises his lightsaber to kill both men, Hondo charges the Sith’s back with his sword. Darth Maleval back hands Hondo with a clenched fist before lassoing Hondo’s neck with a shock whip and electrocuting him. Anson shoots Darth Maleval in the back killing the Sith and saving Hondo. It is reported that Darth Maleval and Hondo Karr were killed in battle. Sergeant Harkas is taken away by a med-droid leaving Anson the only remaining member of Joker Squad. Anson is approached by a “Newbie” looking for Joker Squad to which he replies, “I’m it.” The two troopers walk away to find their transport ships.
Next in part #5, “Broken – Part #5”, On Korriban, Darth Krayt uses Holocrons to summon Darth Andeddu, Darth Nihilus and Darth Bane to teach him how to use the Force to rid him of the Yuuzhan Vong life forms that plague him. The three Sith Lords refuse to help Darth Krayt because he violated the Rule of Two, so he vows to find another way to heal himself.
On Vendaxa, Cade Skywalker, Jariah Syn, Deliah Blue, Marasiah Fel and Astraal Vao flee to Cade’s ship, the Mynock, and come face to face with an Acklay. The Acklay swings its massive claw to crush Astraal but she is saved by her brother Shado Vao and Jedi Master Wolf Sazen. Shado and Sazen quickly dispense the Acklay and prepare to leave with Astraal and Marasiah who tells Jariah and Deliah that she won’t be paying them. In the distance a fireball erupts from three line signaling the destruction of the Jedi’s transport. Jariah and Deliah take no time in doubling the price for transporting Marasiah, Astraal and the Jedi to Marasiah’s father Roan Fel. The conversation is interrupted by Darth Talon and several beasts under the Sith’s persuasion. Darth Talon quickly gets the upper hand on both Jedi using Force lightning until Marasiah intercepts the lightning with her lightsaber claiming that she won’t let another person die. Darth Talon easily Force throws Marasiah to the ground and tells her to run. Sazen tells Cade to take Marasiah to his ship and flee but Cade chooses to stay using the Force to pick up a pile of junk and hurl it at Darth Talon knocking her into the trees. The group returns to the Mynock to find that it’s flight systems are destroyed. Cade, Jariah and Deliah get to work fixing the ship while Sazen and Shado stand guard. Astraal sends as message to Moff Konrad Rus on Coruscant who she trusts updated him on all that has happened. Darth Krayt stands near by listening to the message. When the transmission ends, Darth Krayt and Moff Rus begin to plan on how they are going to lure Roan Fel out of hiding using his daughter as bait.
Finally in part #6, ”Broken – Part #6”, Imperial Knights Antares Draco and Ganner Krieg take on an unauthorized mission to save Princess Marasiah Fel, who is currently trapped by Sith on Vendaxa. They arrive, but are shot down by the Sith. Both survive, and with Jedi Wolf Sazen and Shado Vao helping them. Wolf engaging Darth Nihl in a rematch of their former duel on Ossus, Shado fighting Darth Talon. During the battle Antares admits that he loves Marasiah, with Marasiah replying only as, “I know”. Jariah Syn, having recently found out that Cade was a Jedi, is having doubts about trusting Cade. On the other hand, Deliah Blue is impressed, wondering about how much credits they could make if they had a Jedi on their side. Jariah gets into an argument with Cade, eventually pointing his blaster at him. Cade then leaves the ship, angry. Cade Skywalker looks on the battle, standing still, having flashbacks of his father’s death at the Massacre at Ossus. While Cade stands on, a Sith attacks the defenseless Cade, about to kill him. Then Marasiah jumps in the way and kills the Sith, saving Cade’s life, but also getting seriously wounded herself in the process. Cade eventually gets up, picks Marasiah’s lightsaber up off the ground, breaking his vow to never pick up a lightsaber again, and ignites it. He then shouts with rage, “I have had ENOUGH!”
Finally in part #7, ”Broken – Part #7”, This issue starts off where the last one left off: with the company of the Jedi, Antares Draco, Ganner Krieg, Missionary Vao, the wounded Princess Marasiah Fel, Syn, Deliah, and Cade fighting off a Sith ambush on Vendaxa. Marsiah Fel has fallen in Cade’s defense. In his anger, Cade picks up her lightsaber and-breaking his vow never to pick up a lightsaber again-engages Darth Nihl alongside his former master. during the battle, Antares finds that the Princess is still alive, and he takes her back to the Mynock. Wolf leaves to board the Mynock while Cade continues to do battle with Nihl. Syn comes out to help Cade, and is quickly Force Pushed away by Nihl. This prompts Cade to kick Nihl off a cliff. After the defeat of his opponent, Cade summons Shado to join him in leaving for the Mynock. The company escape before the Sith can jump aboard their ship. During the flight, Cade taps into the Dark side to heal the Princess of all injuries suffered during the battle. After returning the Princess and Imperial Knights to Bastion, Cade leaves with Shado and Sazen in the night to head for The Wheel, leaving Syn and Deliah claiming that he can’t trust Syn.
