A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
Fortress Vader, also known as Darth Vader’s castle and Vader’s personal abode, was a stronghold located on the volcanic world of Mustafar. Once the site of a Sith temple, the fortress was built above a Sith cave that still remained. Existing by the time of reign of the Galactic Empire… the castle came to serve as Darth Vader’s personal residence and from time to time…
And Now, IDW Publishing presents, “Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle”. Return to Vader’s Castle for a spooky spin on your favorite villains from a galaxy far, far away….These exciting stories explore the hidden corners of the Star Wars universe and features a wretched hive of scum and villainy including Darth Maul, Grand Moff Tarkin, Asajj Ventress, Jabba the Hutt, all under the shadow of Darth Vader!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Horned Devil”, a group of smuggling recruits are tasked with surviving a night on Lotho Minor, the junkworld, to show they have what it takes to join the creepy, mean droid Captain Spikewheel’s crew. At this point in time, Maul, having somehow survived his bisection/fall in The Phantom Menace, wormed his way to Lotho Minor and haunts the caverns of the planet. Although, one half of his body is reminiscent of a mechanical spider… and his mind mostly broken, he’s not out of the game yet. He’s the one that sent out the message which brought Spikewheel to his location, hoping to use the ship to escape the planet.
Next in issue #2, “The Curse of Tarkin”, Tarkin boards the ISD Optima for an impromptu inspection. Not long after boarding, the ship comes under attack and an inbound vessel crashes into its hull. Tarkin asks for a report from Commander Cremp and the visuals he sees tell a chilly truth. There is a Creature is here for him! A Monster trying to make Tarkin pay for his sins of creation… The Tarkin Initiative. Tarkin played Frankenstein and “Tarkin-stein” tried creating a “monster” capable of winning the war. Now Tarkin’s “Curse” is back for vengenace.
Next in issue #3, “Bop Sh-Bop, Little Sarlacc Horror”, Force-witch, Asajj Ventress’ time as a bounty hunter in the underworld of Coruscant is ripe with stories, as the ex-Sith combines her old, wicked history with her newfound honor as she treks across the shady depths of Level 1313 making her own way for once. Recruited by a crime lord to solve disappearances all across Level 1313, Ventress quickly uncovers the source: a hungry, growing pet Sarlacc. Now that Asajj has uncovered the creepy, mobile, tentacled, hungry, ever reaching from the dark for it’s latest prey, monster, she has to figure out how to deal with it and more importantly how she is going to make sure that she’s paid.
Next in issue #4, “Vault of the Living Brains”, Jabba’s cousin, Crakka, comes to mend their turbulent past with the offer of a giant, deadly creature and Jabba puts it to the test against his favorite creatures to see if it’s worthy. Crakka’s offer is all part of an elaborate plan to find hidden treasure, the location of which hides in the B’omarr Order’s brain vault below the Palace! The B’omarr Monks are an order which eventually remove their brains from their bodies and place them within tanks so they are free of physical constraints to mull on the mysteries of the universe, using creepy spider-liked droids to get around; you might’ve seen a member in an early scene of Return of the Jedi, when the droids come to the Palace. Crakka’s plans are quickly uncovered by Jabba and her punishment is to join the Order!
Finally in issue #5, “Night of the Lava Zombies”, It’s Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith versus Mustafarian witch and her legion of Lava Zombies. The Mustafarians have never fully accepted the Imperial invaders and their dark overlord on their planet. They have a history of attempting to throw out the Imperial invaders. Now, they attempt it once again with some creepy, lava-themed sorcery, in what easily could’ve been their strongest, most deadly attempt yet. From the clustered, tight-corridor battle, to the chaos of the zombie’s armada… this vividly drawn story with its creepy effects give off some really scary vibes. Then in one of the series’ most chilling scenes, Vader, overcoming a Mustafarian witch’s thrall on him, turns her own abilities against her and makes her order the zombies to drag her to a fiery, lava-filled death as Vader’s helmet reflecting flames.
