A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
While on a secret mission for the Rebel Alliance, Commander Lina Graf’s ship came under attack by TIE fighters and crash-landed on the planet Mustafar, where her crew looks for a way to escape the inhospitable lava planet…
And now, IDW Publishing presents, “Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader’s Castle”. Follow Lina Graf, Crater, and friends as they sneak-and fight-their way into the terrifying castle of Darth Vader! Along the way, they’ll trade spooky stories featuring the most terrifying villains and creatures in the universe! Your favorite characters, like Obi-Wan, Han and Chewie, Hera Syndulla, and the Ewoks, face classic creeps like ghosts, monsters, witches, and more… all with a signature Star Wars twist!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Haunting of the Ghost”, The story begins with narration by Lina Graf, a commander in the Rebel Alliance. Lina is piloting her freighter recalling a ghost story while on the run from Imperial TIE fighters. Looking for a place to land before her ship crashes, one planet shows up on the charts as a possible destination: Mustafar, home of Darth Vader’s castle. Once the crew lands on Mustafar, they discuss whether or not they should leave the safety of their ship (despite the rising temperature inside) or risk going outside into the molten landscape. During the discussion, CR recalls a story Chopper had mentioned to him. The flashback ensues…
Next in issue #2, “Count Dook Prince of Darkness”, begins the story of a darkness that encompasses all and yet light is it’s only enemy. It is the story of power and greed. A threat that will never die, where fear is the greatest weapon, and just as you think you’ve won, it lives on in your nightmares. The story continues with Lina Graf and company on Mustafar deciding their next move on their way to find shelter in a nearby castle. As they begin to make their way, Hudd, “discovers a new species of larva.” Soon after, the angry mother arrives to protect her young. In the act of self-sacrifice, the mother, who appears as some mix of crab and acklay, self-combusts spreading a green slime all over Hudd. After Hudd gets cleaned up, they continue on towards the castle against Hudd’s better judgment, “nothing will come of this, it’ll be like Bray all over again.” As with the preceding issue, the middle part of this story is all flashback with cameos by some main characters. Last week was Hera and Kanan, this issue showcases Obi-Wan Kenobi, Adi Gallia, and Count Dooku. The flashback takes place during The Clone Wars era.
Next in issue #3, “The Briar Witch”, the series continues as Lina, Hudd, Skritt, CR-8R (Crater), and G3 advance towards Vader’s Castle for shelter. From the opening page, the crew is attacked by a legion of Imperial Death Troopers. Lina urges her team to get to the fortress, and while most don’t hesitate, G3 vows to protect Lina as he believes it is his duty. Hudd proceeds to pick the lock of Vader’s Castle. Once inside the fortress, Crater suggests that Lina tell Skritt a story to calm his fears. Lina begins to speak of a young woman who needed a pilot to take a rare work of art to a collector on Rendel. That young pilot turns out to be Han Solo and his Wookiee co-pilot, Chewbacca. Han, never one to turn down some credits, agrees to take the artwork to the collector on Rendel. Upon landing on Rendel, Han and Chewie encounter a wrecked ship they recognized as belonging to one of their friends, Karamu. Shortly afterward they discover Karamu’s damaged droid SV-3 who warns the two of Zalla, the Emerald Witch…
Next in issue #4, “Night of the Gorax”, the stakes are raised as Lina and Crater split up in search of their friend Hudd. Bodyguard droid G3 is left with the notoriously frightened technician Skritt. G3 attempts to reassure his friend Skritt by reminding him that size does not always equal courage, and offers to tell Skritt another story to overcome his fear. Ignoring his friends’ honesty, G3 jumps right into a daring tale of courage displayed by Ewoks Chirpa and Logray when faced with the fate of their village and the brute size of a Gorax. As the tale starts, Chirpa and an Ewok called Ra-Lee are on the hunt for a giant boar-wolf. After capturing their prey and returning it to Bright-Treet Village, an eerie quiet creeps over their home. They soon learn from Chief Buzza that all of the woklings have been taken overnight from their baskets. Ra-Lee immediately assumes the evil Doluks are responsible for this heinous act. Chief Buzza agrees and vows vengeance against the Duloks. The shaman Makrit, however, does not agree that war is the right path and advises Buzza to rethink his ideas. To Ra-Lee’s surprise, her father Buzza agrees with Makrit. Along comes Makrit’s apprentice, Logray who sides with Ra-Lee that the Duloks need to be dealt with. Shortly afterward, Ra-Lee, Chirpa, Logray, and Makrit arrive at a deserted Dulok camp where they are confronted by a Dulok. In typical Star Wars fashion, the name of the character is the same as the species. It is revealed that Makrit was in league with Dulok to sacrifice the woklings to The Great Devourer, a giant Gorax…
Finally in issue #5, “The Fearful Finale”, the end is near for our heroes. The thief turned rebel, Hudd, has fallen at the hands of Darth Vader where he has joined his ill-fated companion, G3. Commander Lina Graf and Skritt remain in a desperate search for their droid friend, Crater. Soon they are confronted by the black-cloaked attendant, Vanee. The ensuing story tells a tale of a hoard of Mustafarians demanding Vader’s castle be burnt to the ground for invading their land. Their demands are short-lived as Vader wipes out the entire army. Following the story, Vader arrives to confront the rebel intruders. Vanee is watering at the mouth, anticipating what his master will do to them. Lina faces Vader without fear or intimidation. Lina devises a plan to escape the castle by remembering some of the previous stories and using those tales as springboards for ideas. Skritt finally begins to overcome his fears by recognizing what it means to be part of a family. Skritt pilots an AT-ST walker and attempts to destroy Vader, but is immediately flung off to the side. This short distraction gives Lina enough time to secure a TIE fighter. She picks up Skritt before he is consumed in lava and together they barely escape the planet.
