Colorist: Guru-eFX

Editor: Mark Paniccia

“Fallen Guns”, The New Republic maintains peace and order after the fall of the Empire. But the evil First Order, modeled after the old regime, rises from its ashes. And with an untold number of powerful war machines and legions of dogmatic stormtroopers at its disposal, the First Order stands poised to seize control of the galaxy. And one ruthless stormtrooper could be the weapon of war that leads the First Order to total victory….

A First Order stormtrooper named KM-8713 takes part in the fighting against the Demirians inhabiting the Iron Planet of Demir in the Unknown Regions. She serves under the command of Captain Phasma. While KM-9713 is a nameless stormtrooper, she aspires to be more than a mere stormtrooper. As the stormtroopers advance on a Demirian stronghold, Captain Phasma implores them to be ready to charge into battle. She describes her troops as blasters in her hands, warning them that if they falter they are no loner fit to serve the First Order. KM-8713 warns Captain Phasma about an approaching Demirian gunship, which is charging up. Phasma tells her troops to get down. The Demirian gunship destroys a First Order AT-ST walker and takes out several stormtroopers. KM-8713 survives the blast and helps a wounded stormtrooper named DB-7197 to his feet. She helps him across the battle but Captain Phasma orders KM-8713 to leave him since he will slow them down. The stormtroopers are attacked by a Demirian warrior. KM-8713 shoots down the enemy warrior but the dying combatant throws a thermal detonator at the group. An unperturbed Captain Phasma throws the wounded DB-7197 onto the detonator, killing him. While a shocked KM-8713 watches in horror, Captain Phasma orders her to report to her Upsilon-class command shuttle to discuss what had occurred today. Later that evening, Captain Phasma meets with KM-8713 aboard her plush quarters in the Upsilon-class shuttle. While pouring wine, Phasma allows KM-8713 to remove her helmet. Phasma describes KM-8713 as a competent soldier and thanks her for saving her life. Phasma points out that her life would not be in danger if she had not stop to reprimand KM-8713 for helping the wounded soldier. Phasma demands to know why KM-8713 had helped the soldier. KM-8713 explains that Phasma had taught them that they were guns and that it would be waste to leave a good “gun” like DB-7197 on the ground. Though KM-8713 believes that DB-7197 could have recovered to live another day, Phasma counters that compassion is weakness and that helping him could have cost her life. Phasma lectures KM-8713 that in order to succeed, she must first survive and that calculated sacrifices have to be made. When asked, KM-8713 admits that her ambition is to follow in Captain Phasma’s footsteps and become a First Order leader. Donning her helmet, Phasma instructs KM-8713 to ignore her fallen comrades and to focus on the goal ahead. She promotes KM-8713 to an officer and charges her with leading an assault on the Demirian base at dawn. At dawn, Captain Phasma addresses the stormtroopers, charging them with seizing control of the Demirian stronghold. She tasks KM-8713 with commanding the assault. Under KM-8713’s leadership, the stormtroopers march to the gates of the Demirian stronghold. They are met by several Demirian armored walkers, which inflict heavy casualties on the stormtroopers. Despite their disadvantaged position, Captain Phasma orders her troopers to continue fighting. However, she discreetly withdraws from the battlefield. KM-8713 pursues her commanding officer, telling her that she is needed at the front. However, Phasma orders her to return. Just then, they hear a squadron of TIE fighters approaching. The TIE fighters bombard the stormtroopers, Demirian soldiers, and walkers. A horrified KM-8713 implores Captain Phasma to tell the First Order to call off the attack. She realizes that Phasma sacrificed her unit in order to pull the enemy into the open. Phasma mockingly responds that she fought bravely and survived despite all the odds. Denouncing Phasma as a traitor, KM-8713 tries to shoot Phasma with her blaster. However, Phasma’s armor deflects the blasts. Phasma responds that her armor is worth far more than KM-8713’s life. Phasma responds that she is not a coward because she is not afraid to do what has to be done. Phasma adds that she is not a fool to lead from the front but rather leads from behind a “disposable shield of patriotic idiots.” Phasma guns down KM-8713 with her blaster. The wounded KM-8713 pleads with Phasma not to leave her behind. However, Phasma retorts that she can’t see her goal if she is looking over her shoulder. Phasma describes herself as a survivor and dismisses KM-8713 as a nameless, fallen gun.

Star Wars: Age of Resistance – General Hux (2019)

Letterer: Travis Lanham
Editor: Mark Paniccia

“Marooned”, Ruthless General Armitage Hux is one of the First Order’s most dangerous and trusted leaders, third only to Kylo Ren and the Supreme Leader himself. What made Hux the man he is today? Ambition? Or…something far more sinister….

Several years earlier, a young Armitage Hux drops a tray of glasses while serving his father Commandant Brendol Hux and Admiral Brooks. The older Hux derides his son for being pathetic and useless while Brooks mocks the younger Hux for being the illegitimate son of a kitchen servant. Brooks suggests that Armitage lick the spilled drink rather than let it go to waste. Armitage obliges but this angers Brendol, who denounces him as weak and forces him to get up. Years later, a bleeding General Armitage Hux is woken by Kylo Ren as their Xi-class light shuttle crash-lands onto a planet. The pilot informs them that their hyperdrive and engine have broken down. Hux suggests that they contact the First Order High Command but the pilot informs them that their communications systems are also out. The shuttle crashes and explodes. Kylo Ren uses his Force powers to save himself and General Hux but the pilot is killed during the explosion. Since their communications is down, Kylo Ren and General Hux have no choice but to talk to each other. Based on the nature of the crash, Ren and Hux deduce that their shuttle was sabotaged. Ren blames Hux for not being able to inspire loyalty within the First Order army while Hux blames Ren for not being able to detect treason despite his Force powers. Hux insults Ren by suggesting that he wears his helmet for “play dressing” and to hide the faces of his “rebel scum” parents. Kylo Ren draws lightsaber and tells Hux that it would take the First Order a long time to find them and that he could take the opportunity to kill him. Hux counters that Supreme Leader Snoke can read minds and discover that he killed him. Ren deactivates his lightsaber. Despite their mutual dislike for each other, the two agree that they have to work together to survive. The two stumble upon a roll of meat which Hux recognizes as bait. They are attacked by two large blue creatures known as Norwoods. Ren fights back with his lightsaber and Force powers but is knocked to the ground. Before the beasts can finish Hux off, an elderly human man orders the Norwoods to stop. The man attends to the unconscious Ren and orders Hux out of hiding. The man tells Hux that he has trained the Norwoods and been stranded for a long time on the planet. Hux recognizes the old man as an Alderaan guard who survived the adestruction of Alderaan. The man says that he fled to the planet to escape the Galactic Civil War. The man does not recognize that Hux is from the First Order, a remnant of the Galactic Empire. After the man introduces himself as Bylsma, Hux tells him that the Galactic Civil War is over and that the Empire fell. When Bylsma asks how he can ascertain that he is telling the truth, Hux tells him that Ren is the son of Leia Organa, the last Princess of Alderaan. He tells Bylsma that Ren’s parents won the war and destroyed the Empire’s two Death Stars. Without revealing his true allegiance, Hux mentions that the Empire has been reduced to remnants and that he and Ren are working on something that would finally bring peace and order to the galaxy. Hux claims that he knew Kylo Ren’s grandfather and mother, describing Leia as an incredible woman. Hux questions why Bylsma is still hiding on the planet. Bylsma replies that he did not transmit any signals in order to hide from the Empire and did not want to risk losing another world. After reassuring Bylsma that Darth Vader and the Emperor are dead, Hux convinces Bylsma to let him use his communications array to contact the wider galaxy. When Ben awakes, Hux reassures him that he has contacted his friends who have send a shuttle. Hux tells Ben that his mother must be worried sick but that they will be home soon thanks to Bylsma. Shortly later, Captain Phasma arrived aboard an Atmospheric Assault Lander with several stormtroopers. To Bylsma’s horror, the stormtroopers open fire on his pet Norwoods, killing them.

Hux tells Phasma not to kill Bylsma but to take out his communications array and to use his planet as target practice for Starkiller Base. He orders Phasma to prepare a list of every personnel member who had access to the sabotaged shuttle before farewelling Bylsma. Back at Starkiller Base, General Hux informs Supreme Leader Snoke that he believes that he has identified the one responsible for sabotaging the shuttle. Ren vows to punish the saboteur. Hux convinces Snoke to let him deal with the saboteur personally, claiming that he will be less messy that Ren. Snoke lets Hux deal with the traitor. In private, Ren tells Snoke that Hux cannot be trusted because he wants to usurp his place and kill him. Snoke replies that Hux wants to kill a lot of people and does not take it personally. Snoke says that men like Hux are useful “when consumed with ambition fueled by spite”, “can set pride aside”, and “who have shame burning inside them.” Snoke describes abused pipes as vicious creatures who never forget where they came from and who never forgive those who wronged them. Together with Captain Phasma, Hux confronts Admiral Brooks and disarms him. Hux confronts Brooks at gunpoint. Brooks denies sabotaging Hux’s shuttle but Hux informs him that they have identified a radar technician as the saboteur. Hux adds that Brooks was the technician’s superior and that responsibility ultimately lies with him. Brooks initially plays innocent but then derides Hux for being “spineless”, adding that his father shared his view of Hux. Hux agrees and tells that was one of the reasons why he had his father killed. Hux shoot Brooks in the shoulder, telling him that he, Snoke, and Ren underestimate him. Brooks begs for mercy but Hux counters that he sees him as something that he can control. Hux tells Brooks that he has the power to destroy worlds while Brooks only has the power to destroy people. He vows to outlive Brooks and to hold more power than him. Before gunning Brooks down, he vows that Brooks will not live to see him succeed.

“Fail. Or Kill It.”, From the ashes of the evil Galactic Empire rises the First Order, a villainous sect of fanatics united by their Supreme Leader, Snoke. With a promising new apprentice and the limitless power of the dark side of the Force to command, Snoke is poised to crush the New Republic and take over the galaxy….

On an rocky world in the Rarlech system, Supreme Leader Snoke uses the Force to hold his apprentice, Kylo Ren, high above jagged rocks. Snoke asks Ren if he is afraid, which he denies but Snoke says he can sense Ren’s fear, and tells him that powerful beings can harness their rage to strike, or they will fail. He releases Ren who falls but uses the Force to save himself, hovering just above the sharp spikes. Ren asks his master if he would have saved him had he not done so himself – Snoke replies that Skywalker would have, but in doing so would have held Ren back from his true power and potential. As they return to Snoke’s shuttle, Ren asks where they are going, and Snoke replies that they are continuing his training elsewhere, and that Ren must face what is holding him back, and either fail, or kill it. The pilot informs Snoke they have reached their destination, and as Ren picks up his helmet, Snoke orders him to leave it. When Ren hesitates, Snoke strikes him, telling him he cannot pretend to be Vader in this place. Snoke and Ren leave the shuttle and step onto the surface of Dagobah. Ren says he can still feel Skywalker’s presence, and Snoke tells him that one of the most formidable Jedi began his training there. Ren asks Snoke why he speaks of Skywalker with such respect, to which he replies that Ren’s uncle had earned his respect and fear, and that he would be ruling the galaxy if Luke had been at his side. They reach the Dark Side Cave, with Ren saying he can sense cold and death. Snoke says the cave contains power and darkness, and tells Ren he must enter to face what he has been too weak to bury – or run away. Ren enters the cave and is confronted by a vision of Luke Skywalker, who says he does not want to fight him. From outside, Snoke senses Ren’s decision to strike Skywalker down. With his uncle lying at his feet, Ren says he is ready and the challenge is over, but Snoke replies that this is not the case. Ren turns to see his parents, Han Solo and Leia Organa. Calling him Ben, they beg him to stop, saying he is their son and he is loved. Outside the cave, Snoke senses Ren igniting his lightsaber and striking – but Ren has deceived his master, and impales a tree, not the vision of his parents. Snoke enters the cave, saying he would like to see the results of Ren’s actions, but his apprentice uses his power to destroy it. Snoke remarks that the cave had stood for thousands of years, and that he had hoped to bring other apprentices to it – Ren replies “You won’t need other apprentices.”

“Out of The Shadow”, The son of smuggler Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, Ben Solo was once one of the most promising of the new generation of Jedi. That is, until his uncle, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, sensed the dark side in Ben. Since then Ben has abandoned the ways of the Jedi. As Kylo Ren of the villainous First Order he now walks a dark path….

Imperial veteran Captain Ruthford dons old Imperial stormtrooper armor aboard an Upsilon-class command shuttle. While conversing with a subordinate First Order stormtrooper. Ruthford insists on wearing the old armor because he is an old soldier who prefers something “familiar” and comfortable. He and Kylo Ren travel with an admiral to Wild Space planet which is under attack from the Benathy, a warlike alien species that have been encroaching on First Order space. The First Order hopes to negotiate with the aliens but are prepared for war if negotiations fail. Since Captain Ruthford is a veteran of the last battle that the Empire had fought against the Benathy, Ren had brought him along. When Ren asks how he survived, Ruthford replies that he survived through dumb luck. Ren disagrees and tells Ruthford that he will accompany him and advise. As the grandson of Darth Vader, Kylo Ren vows to succeed where Vader failed. Ruthford disagrees that Vader failed and says that Vader managed to subdue the Benathy. Since they are walking in Vader’s shadow, Ren believes that there is glory in the battlefield. Surveying the mass graves of fallen Imperials, Ruthford disagrees and says that there are only waster lives here. Approaching the tent, Ren asks Ruthford what he knows about the Benathy. Ruthford describes them as a proud and stubborn race who value size and strength above all else. Ruthford warns Ren that there are things bigger than him. Kylo Ren and Captain Ruthford meet with King Kristoff, who towers over them and wears the helmets of fallen Imperial stormtroopers as a necklace. King Kristoff invites Ren and Ruthford to take a seat but Ren insists on standing. The Benathy have wiped out all life on four nearby planets. Ren demands taht they cease expanding. King Kristoff recalls that Lord Vader gave similar demands and killed their last King but that even Vader could not withstand their “god.” Ren replies that Vader put them down but Kristoff replies that his people got up. Ren reiterates his demand that the Benathy cease expansion and submit to the First Order. Stretching out his hand, Ren attempts a mind trick but the King is resistant. Kristoff is defiant and tells Ren that saying the same thing slower doesn’t make him more persuasive. Ruthford tries to warn the King not to annoy Kylo Ren. Kristoff doesn’t see why he should stop. Ren impales Kristoff’s head with his crossblade lightsaber, killing him. Ruthford adds that Ren can be a little “touchy.” The King’s commanders try to avenge their leader but Kylo Ren beheads one and slices the legs of the other. He tells the wounded Benathy that he is not so tall without his legs. Ruthford tells Kylo Ren that they were supposed to be negotiation and that it is hard to negotiate with dead people. Ren replies that he did not hear anyone objecting to his demands. Due to the failed negotiations, the Benathy prepare for war against the Empire, donning armor and deploying walkers and droids. Due to the vast numbers of Benathy, Captain Ruthford advises Lord Vader to call a retreat. When Ren asks if Vader retreated, Ruthford replies that Vader fought until the Benathy’s god arrived and that thousands died on both sides. He tries to warn Kylo Ren that this is not a competition but Ren is determined to succeed where Vader failed. As Ren leads the First Order into battle, Ruthford experiences flashbacks of Vader leading stormtroopers years earlier. The Benathy’s god, which turns out to be a Zillo Beast, soon arrives. Kylo Ren orders the First Order’s gunship to open fire on the giant creature. Ruthford warns that Zillo Beasts are unbreakable but Ren disagrees, saying that nothing is unbreakable. The Zillo Beast warps its serpentine body around the gunship and proceeds to devour it. Ren proceeds to board the First Order shuttle. Thinking Ren is being reckless, Ruthford tries to warn him that he cannot prove anything to a dead man but Ren ignores him. Ren flies the shutle towards the Zillo Beast, which is still devouring the gunship. Kylo Ren jumps into the mouth of the Zillo Beast with his lightsaber. Watching Ren’s reckless action, Ruthford thinks that Ren is wasting his life. He remarks that it is a nice way to get eaten and quips that Ren’s grandfather would have been impressed. Ruthford suggests that the Admiral withdraw his forces. However, Kylo Ren uses his lightsaber to slice through the insides of the massive Zillo Beast, killing it and causing it to crash on the ground. Emerging from the corpse of the Zillo Beast, Kylo Ren addresses the Benathy army, telling them that their god is dead and that they now only worship the First Order. Following the battle, an impressed Ruthford speaks with Ren, saying that it wasn’t a competition because he won. Kylo Ren smiles.
