A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
Years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, Artoo-Detoo and See-Threepio journey to the Kalarba system where they meet the notorious Olag Greck for the first time. After they are acquired by the Pitareeze family, the droids find themselves in a series of misadventures with pirates, bounty hunters, and rock monsters.
This limited-edition hardcover features a dust jacket with art by Kilian Plunkett and the signature of actor Anthony Daniels. The tipped-in signature plate features the Ralph McQuarrie painting that George Lucas used to pitch the original story to the studio.
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, “Droids – Part #1”, In the Star Wars galaxy, automatons are so much necessary property, but even first-degree droids are considered expendable! Set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and the formation of the Empire, Droids features the adventures of protocol droid See-Threepio and astromech droid Artoo-Detoo in the Kalarba system. Despite their differences, See-Threepio and Artoo-Detoo know that the best way to survive is to stick together.
Next in part #2, “Droids – Part #2”, A gang of interplanetary thieves steal See-Threepio and Artoo-Detoo from the Pitareeze family, and take the droids to Kalarba’s moon, Indobok. The droids meet a nefarious character from their past, and realize that their troubles have just begun!
Next in part #3, “Droids – Part #3”, In a deadly case of mistaken identity, See-Threepio and Artoo-Detoo become entangled in an illegal operation on the Hosk moon, and are forced to enter a droid battle arena.
Next in part #4, “Droids – Part #4”, When Star Wars hit the big screen in 1977, the world fell in love with R2-D2 and C-3PO. Now the events that led them to their fateful meeting with Luke Skywalker are revealed for the first time! In this issue, Corellian rogue Jace Forno leases the dysfunctional duo for a deadly mission to the moon Indobok!
Next in part #5, “Droids – Part #5”, In the droid trade the only use for old units is as spare parts and scrap. So even See-Threepio is impressed when he and Artoo meet veritable antiques Q-E and 2-E, two diminutive Model Es who have operated a nursery for several generations of Kalarbans. But despite their longevity, Q-E and 2-E carry a horrific secret that could spell the end for all droids!
Next in part #6, “Artoo’s Day Out”, C-3PO, under the ownership of Baron Pitareeze, assists the Baron as a translator for his business negotiations, leaving R2-D2 behind to watch the landspeeder. During this time, R2 is stolen by spice smugglers and transported off-planet. However, the ship is interrupted by a heavily-armed security ship, at which point R2 gets into a lifepod and zooms back to the planet’s surface, just in time to meet with Pitareeze and Threepio as if nothing ever happened.
Next in part #7, “Droids – Part #6”, In the conclusion to the adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO in the Kalarba system, a power core rupture on Hosk forces all life forms to be evacuated, but life forms doesn’t include droids! As Olag Greck makes his final stand, R2-D2 and C-3PO race against time to save the industrial moon… but first they’ll have to survive Greck’s droid armada!
