A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
The Old Republic was the legendary government that united a galaxy under the rule of the Senate. In This era, the Jedi are numerous, and serve as guardians of peace and justice. The Old Republic comic series takes place in this era, chronicling the immense wars fought by the Jedi of old, and the ancient Sith.
Nearly 4,000 years before the Death Star, fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick’s quest to clear his name for the alleged murder of his fellow Jedi-in-training brings him head-to-head with the galaxy’s most feared fighting force – the Mandalorians! Along with a petty crook named Gryph and Elbee the grouchy droid, Zayne is a passenger aboard the Last Resort, a renegade ship piloted by the senile genius Camper and his fierce protector Jarael. Together, this motley crew will face kidnappings, hijackings, maniacal scientists, Mandalorian traitors, bumbling bounty-hunting brothers, and a few really big explosions.
Stories/Spoilers
In part #1, On the mining colony of Vanquo, a refugee of the Mandalorian Wars is found lurking around camp by a miner. He is brought to the camp’s high officer, where he is given food just as a transmission for the mining facility comes in. The transmission is a warning from Jedi Master Q’Anilia, telling the miners to evacuate the planet immediately because the Mandalorians have just invaded. The receiving officer doubts the validity of the transmission, and assumes it is simply a practical joke being played by his colleague at a another outpost. With the use of a Jedi mind trick, the refugee convinces the officer that the Mandalorian threat is real, and when explosions are heard outside, the miners all escape the planet on their ship, leaving the refugee behind.
With the miners gone, the refugee reveals himself to be Zayne Carrick, who — along with his travel companions Gryph, Jarael, Camper, and Elbee—drove the miners out of the camp to steal their supplies. The plan does not workout however, for in the midst of raiding the supplies, the Mandalorians actually attack the mining facility. Quickly, Jarael, who has Zayne’s lightsaber, is surrounded and taken captive, while the others flee into the forest towards their ship, The Last Resort. Despite fighting their way through the forest to their ship, the group is unable to flee due to the fact that a Mandalorian who caught up to them decides to steal their ship rather than kill them.
Next in part #2, After having had their ship stolen, Zayne Carrick, Gryph, Camper, and Elbee manage to cling on and make their way inside before it exits Vanquo’s atmosphere. Inside the ship, the four fugitives manage to overtake the Mandalorian on board and escape the Republic forces in orbit by jumping to hyperspace.
Later, while trying to interrogate the captive Mandalorian, Zayne is told by Gryph that Camper has been flying the ship into Mandalorian space to attempt to rescue Jarael. Hearing this news, the Manadalorian decides to speak up and offers help in keeping them alive. Still weary of the Mandalorian, they allow him into the cockpit where he determines that Jarael has been taken to Flashpoint: a research center where captured Jedi are taken and studied by Mandalorian biologist, Demagol.
The Mandalorian advises against an attack on Flashpoint, telling the group that Jarael cannot be rescued, and it would be better for them to just turn around and escape the war. Revealing his real name to be, Rohlan Dyre, the Mandalorian explains his reasons for desertion: he doesn’t understand the war and is on a quest to find the reasons behind it.
Meanwhile, on Flashpoint, Jarael is brought to a room with other Jedi awaiting testing by Demagol and starts a conversation with a Jedi named Squint. Aware that Jarael is not a Jedi, Squint offers himself as the next test subject to Demagol in order to spare her. As he is dragged away, he telepathically tells her that the Mandalorians have yet to discover all the powers a Jedi has.
Next in part #3, In a flashback scene, Lucien Draay’s mother Krynda visits her toddler son, who is in the care of a nursing droid named Ninebeedee.
In the present, Lucien and the other four Tarisian Jedi Masters Xamar, Raana Tey, Q’Anilia, and Feln arrive on Coruscant, only to find the gates of the Draay Estate closed to them. Xamar tells Lucien that the Jedi High Council is concerned that the Jedi Order lacks the resources to find the fugitive Zayne Carrick. Draay reminds the Administrator of his duties and sends one of his associates to monitor their progress. Draay is unwilling to send Tey. Ninebeedee informs Lucien to wait for contact from his mother. Q’Anilia is perplexed at why Krynda does not want to see them.
In a flashback scene dating back thirty years ago, Lucien eavesdrops as Haazen introduces a Force-sensitive child named Q’anilia. Back at the Jedi High Council, Master Vrook Lamar admonishes the Revanchist for embroiling the Jedi Order in the Mandalorian Wars. He is ordered to retrieve Jedi Knights and Padawans who were captured on Suurja. As the Revanchist leaves, Lucien chats with him and tells him that he was right.
In a flashback dating back twenty-five years ago, an adolescent Lucien expresses frustration at his mother for not allowing him to train with the other Padawans. Krynda belittles her son for lacking her power of second sight, likening him to his late father. When Lucien speaks up for his father, Krynda storms out. Haazen reassures Lucien that he is not a failed Padawan and explains that his mother blames herself for failing to foresee the rise of the Sith Lord Exar Kun.
Returning to the present, Master Lamar chastises Lucien and his fellow Masters for failing to protect their Padawans. Vandar Tokare, speaking via hologram, takes responsibility for assigning the Padawans to the Masters when they were not ready. Lucien also takes responsibility for the Padawan’s deaths but rejects the notion that it encouraged the recent Mandalorian incursions. Despite the Mandalorian threat, Lucien implores the Jedi to focus on preventing the re-emergence of the Sith. He petitions for the Council to let him and his Jedi Masters lead the search for Zayne. Master Lamar dismisses Lucien’s petition and reassigns the Jedi Covenant members to separate postings.
Xamar asks his fellow Masters why they did not reveal all they had foreseen of Zayne. Feln takes offense while Raana expresses frustration that the Council is ignoring their prophecies about the Sith invasion. Q’anilia warns that she sees more obstacles ahead and that the Mandalorian invasion could cause the Jedi to lose focus. Despite the Council’s orders, Lucien resolves that they continue their hunt for Zayne.
In a flashback scene dating back twenty years ago, Lucien spars with his younger Covenant colleagues in a lightsaber training session, besting them. His mother orders a halt to the training session and tells Haazen that she will not allow her son to hurt her students. Haazen vouches for Lucien and tells her that Lucien is the warrior that his father was. Krynda defends the foresight abilities of her Padawans but Hazen expresses skepticism. Haazen agrees to use the Draay family fortunes and connections to help Krynda’s seers but enlists Lucien’s help in dealing with the “higher issues.”
Returning to the present, Lucien visits his family estate. Haazen angrily tells Lucien that he was supposed to bring the Padawans to Coruscant for evaluation instead of killing them. Lucien responds that he interpreted the situation on the ground and acted as Haazen would have expected him to do so. Haazen chastises Lucien for almost exposing the Jedi Covenant’s activities. When Lucien asks about his mother’s whereabouts, Haazen turns the topic to Lucien neglecting to mention Zayne’s special relationship with the Force in his earlier reports.
Haazen disparages Lucien’s abilities as a Jedi Master, prompting Haazen to described him as a failed Padawan. Haazen reiterates his orders to bring Zayne back alive but Lucien says that killing him will avert the nightmare he foresaw. Haazen then removes his cloak, revealing his scarred body and mechanical limbs. Haazen responds that he is a veteran of the Great Sith War and knows how to deal with the Sith threat better than Lucien or his mother.
When Lucien demands to know where his mother is, Haazen ignores him and reiterates his orders. Lucien angrily accuses Haazen of concealing information from him. Lucien leaves the Draay estate with his dark secret.
Next in part #4, At Flashpoint Station, behind Mandalorian lines, a ship arrives carrying Mandalorian warrior Rohlan Dyre who is bringing Jedi Padawan and fugitive Zayne Carrick as a prisoner for the scientist Demagol. Unknown to the Mandalorians at the base, however, Dyre and Carrick are actually working together to infiltrate the research center and save the captive Jedi and Jarael.
Being allowed inside the facility, Dyre approaches Demagol and demands that Zayne be the next Jedi to be experimented on, sparing Jarael, who was next in line, of any torture. Once inside the laboratory, Dyre incapacitates Demagol, and Zayne puts on his armor to assume the scientist’s role. The duo make their way outside, where they strike up a conversation with some other Mandalorians during which time Zayne uses the Force to secretly place charges around the base.
At this time, the Mandalorians receive a message ostensibly from a Republic Admiral who blows up the charges that Zayne set and warns that the same tactic will be used at other Mandalorian bases. However, the Admiral is really Gryph, broadcasting from The Last Resort where he, Camper, and Elbee had been hiding.
The ploy works, and the Mandalorians escape Flashpoint on their ship to warn the rest of their forces of this new Republic strategy. Freeing Jarael and the captive Jedi, the two groups split up, with Dyre deciding to accompany the Jedi and Demagol back to Coruscant. With The Last Resort just about to take-off, however, Rohlan Dyre sneaks back into the ship and hides himself in the smuggler’s secret compartment.
Next in part #5, Under the pseudonyms of Hyro and Chantique Margryph, on the banking planet of Telerath, Camper and Jarael attempt to withdraw the credits from Gryph’s account by telling a banker that their funds were frozen on account of the similarities between their “name” and the name of fugitive Marn Hierogrpyh. Their story bought, the banker escorts Camper and Jarael to a waiting area, unbeknownst to them however, Ithorian bounty hunters Del and Dob Moomo lurking in the bushes, on an assignment to keep watch over the banker.
Growing weary of their dull task, the brothers decide to capture the banker rather than tail him. Jumping out of the bushes, the duo fight off Jarael and manage to grab the banker and run off with him. Giving chase, Jarael informs Zayne and Gryph—who have been listening in on the conversation from The Last Resort—about what has just happened. Also giving chase, Zayne manages to catch up with the captors, but is thrown off guard when he sees that the captive banker is actually his father.
Finally in part #6, Aboard their ship on Telerath, the Moomo Williwaw, bounty hunter brothers Del and Dob Moomo are being berated by a hologram of Jedi Master Raana Tey for kidnapping, rather than spying on, banker Arvan Carrick. After the scolding and a fist fight between themselves, Dob disembarks the ship to go to a cantina, leaving Del and Carrick aboard.
Meanwhile, on another part on the banking planet, Zayne reveals to Gryph and Jarael that the banker who was kidnapped was in fact his father. Wondering why his father would be the target of a kidnapping, Jarael deduces that capturing Zayne’s father was a way of drawing Zayne out from hiding. Considering themselves lucky to have ran into Zayne’s father before the trap was ready, the three head back to The Last Resort to work on a plan to rescue Zayne’s father.
Later that night, Gryph enters the cantina where Dob is posted and initiates a conversation with him. Gryph makes an offer to Dob to trade Zayne’s father for Zayne himself, an offer that Dob accepts after extensive persuasion and alcohol from Gryph. Dob tells Gryph the location of his ship, and tells him to meet their in an hour. Hearing the location of the Moomo’s through a hidden transmitter that Gryph has, Zayne makes his way over to it.
Arriving at the ship before Dob, Zayne sneaks in and eavesdrops on a conversation between Del and Raana Tey in which she tells the him that she will be arriving at Telerath in a few days to sort out their mess and orders him to wait in orbit for her. Taking note of Master Tey’s involvement with his father’s kidnapping, Zayne frees his dad and escapes the ship with him.
Back aboard The Last Resort, Arvan tells the group that he will still be able to access Gryph’s account and withdrawn his credits. Taking his share of the credits, Zayne immediately has his father transfer it to someone on Taris, despite the fact that the planet is currently under siege by the Mandalorians. After the transfer, Zayne tells his dad to get a transfer off Telerath to Dantooine, the only place he believes his family will be safe.
