A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas.  The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.

In October 1993, Dark Horse Comics took us deeper into the Star Wars universe with Tales of the Jedi. The epic drama Star Wars was said to have happened “long ago, in a galaxy far away.” In that same galaxy, but even longer ago, lies the tale of the Jedi Knights. That was a time of peace, forged by the vast confederation of star systems known as the Galactic Republic. The Galactic Republic was a democracy, famed for its wise and fair leadership. When danger threatened, it also could call on its protectors, the Jedi Knights. Against the Dark Side, these heroic warriors fought for the cause of good, using their lightsabers and the power of the Force.

Now… a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi! Before the rise of the Empire, before the legendary exploits of Luke, Han, and Leia, there was a galaxy linked together by the newly formed Republic and the roaming warriors of legend — the Jedi Knights! Journey back four thousand years before Star Wars: A New Hope and learn of the time when the Jedi Knights were the most powerful, most respected force in the galaxy. A time when many worlds and civilizations fell to the Dark Side of the Force, and the only hope of millions of innocent beings were the legion of Jedi sworn to protect them. A time of great adventure — and greater danger!

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon – Part 1”, Millennia ago, the discovery of hyperspace travel brought the galaxy together, giving birth to a democratic union of star systems known as the Galactic Republic. From the time of its inception, the Republic grew, over thousands of years, to encompass vast numbers of inhabited worlds. The survival of the Republic depended on two factors: the wise governing of selfless administrators and lawmakers…and the reservation of harmony and justice by a heroic warrior fraternity – the Jedi Knights. In those glorious ancient days, a great many force-sensitive individuals willingly entered arduous training under accomplished Jedi Masters, taking up the weapons, the knowledge, and the powers of the Jedi Way. Join us now as we explore the secret histories recorded in the Jedi Holocron – tales of an age when the Jedi Knights were numerous and strong!

Next in issue #2, “Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon – Part 2”, 4000 years before the time of Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Knights were the most powerful and respected force in the Galaxy. In those days a Jedi Master named Arca of Arkania sent three of his apprentices on a mission of peace and justice. The three young Jedi are Ulic Qel-Droma, his brother Cay Qel-Droma, and the Twi’lek Tott Doneeta. Aboard their ship, the Nebulon Ranger, they cross the vastness of hyperspace to an untamed world called Onderon. As the three Jedi Knights meet with Queen Amanoa, ruler of Iziz, the Beast Lords stage an unexpected attack on the Royal Citadel, and the Queen’s daughter Galia is kidnapped. Overriding the misgivings of his companions, Ulic Qel-Droma decides to pursue the abductors. As the Nebulon Ranger takes to the skies over Onderon’s wild forests, a seeker-torpedo, fired from the ground, finds its target!

Next in issue #3, “The Saga of Nomi Sunrider – Part 1″, The time of Ulic-Qel Droma is remembered as an important turning point in the history of the Old Republic. It was a time when the dark side of the Force rose up with unexpected fury against the Galaxy…and nearly drove the Jedi Knights to extinction. The names of the Jedi Knights who stood fast in those days still ring down through the ages. Their histories and legends are recorded in luminous detail in the crystalline recesses of the Jedi Holocron. Another Jedi Warrior, whose skill in the art of Jedi Battle Meditation will never be forgotten, is Nomi Sunrider. Journey with us now as the Jedi Holocron reveals the unusual path Nomi Sunrider followed to mastery of the Jedi Way.

Next in issue #4, “The Saga of Nomi Sunrider – Part 2″, In the time of Ulic Qel-Droma, a Jedi Knight named Andur Sunrider journeys to the galactic frontier to visit the legendary Master Thon. With him are his wife Nomi Sunrider, their young daughter Vima, and their protocol droid A-3DO. As the little family passes through the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal, a cruel Hutt named Great Bogga learns that Andur is carrying a gift to his new teacher: precious Adegan crystals. Staging a diversion to distract the Jedi’s attention, the Hutt’s men attack Andur Sunrider from behind with a poisonous Gorm-worm, and the young Jedi Knight is struck dead. As her world comes crashing down, Nomi Sunrider must now defend herself and her daughter. Guided by the Force, she picks up her husband’s fallen lightsaber and wields it with natural skill, driving off her husband’s killers. With the Force as their ally, Nomi Sunrider and her daughter continue the journey to the bleak desert world of Ambria. There Nomi meets Master Thon: an awesome armor-plated creature of savage countenance…and great wisdom.

Finally in issue #5, “The Saga of Nomi Sunrider – Part 3”, Following the tragic death of Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider, Nomi Sunrider and her daughter Vima meet Master Thon, an armor-plated creature of savage visage…and great wisdom. On Thon’s arid world, Nomi and little Vima encounter dark side dragons. As the baleful entities attack, Nomi is forced to use her undeveloped power of Jedi Battle Meditation to rescue her child. When Thon’s apprentice Oss Wilum is called to join battles with the dark side far across the galaxy, Nomi Sunrider is left behind to begin her Jedi training with the fearsome Master Thon. Meanwhile, a space pirate named Finhead Stonebone hijacks an Ithullian ore hauler and incurs the wrath of Great Bogga, the reigning crimelord of the Stenness system…and the very Hutt who murdered Andur Sunrider. Captured by Bogga’s ruthless enforcers, Stonebone and crew are dragged before the Hutt for punishment.
