A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. The more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005. And Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.
In October 1993, Dark Horse Comics took us deeper into the Star Wars universe with Tales of the Jedi. The epic drama Star Wars was said to have happened “long ago, in a galaxy far away.” In that same galaxy, but even longer ago, lies the tale of the Jedi Knights. That was a time of peace, forged by the vast confederation of star systems known as the Galactic Republic. The Galactic Republic was a democracy, famed for its wise and fair leadership. When danger threatened, it also could call on its protectors, the Jedi Knights. Against the Dark Side, these heroic warriors fought for the cause of good, using their lightsabers and the power of the Force.
Then, one year later, in October 1994 Dark Horse Comics followed with another Tale of the Jedi – Dark Lords of the Sith. Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider are enjoying a peaceful time in the galaxy until the Krath strike against the Jedi. At a secret Jedi meeting, the Krath place servant droids which are really programmed to kill. Many Jedi are wounded and killed including Qel-Droma’s own Master Arca. Qel-Droma seeks revenge against the Krath. During his “mission,” he struggles to hold on to the light side of the force and resist becoming the next Dark Jedi.
Now… a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – Dark Lords of the Sith! In the remote reaches of the Star Wars universe, an ancient and deadly power has been reawakened by a foolish and arrogant young Jedi. He will begin a quest to become a Dark Lord of the Sith, and every galaxy will be threatened by his power.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Masters and Students of the Force”, For a thousand generations young Jedi Knights have dedicated their lives to preserving harmony and justice throughout the Galactic Republic. Four millennia before the birth of Luke Skywalker, the brothers Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma were two who took up the Jedi way. Together with the Twi’lek Tott Doneeta they apprenticed to the wise Jedi Master Arca of Arkania. Another student of the Force was Nomi Sunrider, who chose to become a Jedi Knight after the tragic death of her Jedi husband, Andur. Nomi and her daughter Viva were taught by the great beast-Jedi, Master Thon of Ambria. These renowned Jedi, and others equally as valiant, became enmeshed in dramatic and harrowing events surrounding the reappearance of the dark teachings of the Sith, and ancient race of magicians long thought extinct. Four hundred years before Arca and Thon, a dark Jedi named Freedon Nadd introduced the suppressed Sith teachings to the planet Onderon. Nadd’s dark-side powers took hold on the isolated world, and flourished unchecked until Master Arca brought together a band of Jedi to root them out. Now Freedon Nadd’s living spirit has managed to confound the great old Jedi. On Onderon, under Arca’s very nose, Nadd has instructed two young aristocrats, Satal Keto and Aleema, heirs to the throne of the Empress Teta System. Satal and Aleema have returned to their homeworld as powerful initiates of the Sith way. Elsewhere, other events are unfolding that will affect the future of the Galaxy: On the planet Dantooine, a proud Jedi named Exar Kun steals his Master’s holocron, curious to learn more about the legendary fallen Jedi Knights who were known as the Dark Lords of the Sith. The Holocron speaks…

Featuring issue #1 Poly-Sealed w/ a Star Wars Galaxy Trading Card. Awesome!!
Next in issue #2, “The Quest for the Sith”, On three widely separated worlds, events are unfolding which will severely test the great company of the Jedi Knights and shake the Galactic Republic to its foundations. On Dantooine, a proud Jedi named Exar Kun sets out to uncover forbidden dark-side knowledge and to learn the secret histories of the fallen Jedi who became Dark Lords of the Sith. On Empress Teta, young aristocrats Satal Keto and Aleema introduce their friends to the lore of the ancient Sith magicians. Calling themselves the Krath, Satal and Aleema grow progressively possessed by evil, until finally they murder their royal parents and take political control of the seven Tetan worlds. On the planet Onderon, the great Jedi warrior Master Arca assigns Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider to lead the joint Jedi and Republic task force to root out the Krath and restore peace to the Empress Teta system. Meanwhile, in the test of his lightsaber skills, Exar Kun humiliates his master, Vodo-Siosk Baas. As Kun prepares to abandon his teacher and leave Dantooine forever, Master Vodo’s words to his apprentice hold great portent for the future of the Galaxy: “Exar Kun, you are my most formidable student. But I sense something in you that frightens me… something hidden even from yourself… a place that remains unseen because no light escapes from that region of your heart.”
With the power of the dark side of the Force aiding them, Satal and Aleema – two wealthy young aristocrats – boldly begin annexing the galaxy! Alerted to this deadly threat to peace, the Jedi begin planning a defense… but will they be too late? Against this backdrop of interstellar war, Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider – two novice Jedi Knights – find that in the heat of war, there can be flames of passion!
Next in issue #3, “Descent to the Dark Side”, After Jedi Knight Exar Kun, in a test of his lightsaber skills, cruelly defeats his Master Vodo Baas, he abandons his teacher and begins a search for the remnants of the ancient Sith race and their Jedi rulers, the Dark Lords of the Sith. Elsewhere, in the Empress Teta system, Satal Keto and his cousin Aleema lead a planetary attack on Koros Major, the last Tetan planet to resist the Krath dictatorship. Jedi and Republic joint forces, led by Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider, arrive over Koros Major to deal with the Tetan situation. Sorceress Aleema attempts to terrify the joint forces with Sith illusions, and Satal Keto launches suicidal Chaos attack ships against the Jedi/Republic fleet. Nomi Sunrider sees through Aleema’s magic – but when one of the chaos fighters plows into the bridge of the Jedi/Republic command ship, Ulic Qel-Droma is seriously hurt. Meanwhile, on the planet Onderon, Exar Kun finds two followers of Freedon Nadd who guide him to a mausoleum on the Dxun moon. There, the spirit of Freedon Nadd himself appears to Kun and orders him to exhume the Sith scrolls hidden in a Nadd’s sarcophagus. With the scrolls to guide him, Exar Kun crosses the Galaxy to one of the lost worlds of the ancient Sith magicians and their dark Jedi rulers.
The Krath attack! During a seemingly peaceful meeting of the Jedi Knights, a deadly blow is struck for the dark side of the Force! The first casualties of this struggle between dark and light galvanize Ulic toward a rash decision that may cost him his life.
Next in issue #4, “Death of a Dark Jedi”, Following a disastrous confrontation with the malevolent Krath, Jedi Knights from all over the Galaxy come together on the planet Deneba to deal with this new threat to peace and justice. Ulic Qel-Droma makes a dangerous proposal: he will infiltrate the Krath and learn the secrets of their dark-side power. As Ulic’s own Master Arca and others protest his plan, assassin droids sent by the Krath unleash deadly weaponry, killing many brave Jedi before they can be destroyed. Among the fallen is the great Master Arca himself. As Ulic mourns his teacher, Nomi Sunrider warns Ulic Qel-Droma that it is foolish to think he can eradicate the dark side by learning its ways. But Ulic Qel-Droma vows to succeed where others have failed: “I will do this for Master Arca… for all the Jedi Knights… and for the good of the Republic!” Few among the great Jedi gathered on Deneba have foreseen the far greater disturbance that is about to divide the Galaxy. On the planet Korriban, the wandering Jedi Exar Kun discovers a valley of spectacular Sith tombs. There, the spirits of the ancient Dark Lords of the Sith test their new protégé. As alchemical Guardian creatures attack him, Kun finds his light-side powers mysteriously blocked. The only way Exar Kun can defeat the monsters is to release the power of anger, which bursts through him with great force. Now, guided by the dark spirit of Freedon Nadd, Exar Kun sets out to retrieve ancient Sith power objects on a remote jungle moon…
In search of ancient Sith magic, the Jedi Exar Kun travels to a place of mysterious, mystical power – a power so dark, so evil, that his very link to the light side of the Force is shattered. Jedi powers can’t help him here. Only the dark side of the Force can save him – even as it consumes him!
Next in issue #5, “Sith Secrets”, The spirit of dark Jedi Freedon Nadd leads his protégé Exar Kun to the fourth moon of Yavin, the legendary refuge of a group of Sith renegades. There, Exar Kun is captured by Massassi tribesmen, the degenerate descendants of ancient Sith. The Massassi torture Exar Kun and destroy his ship. Kun finds his light-side power mysteriously blocked, but through the unrelenting insistence of Freedon Nadd, Kun uses the dark side to free himself and take control of the Massassi. Exploring Yavin’s temple ruins, Exar Kun finds a powerful Sith amulet… and unwittingly frees a hideous guardian creature. The monster slaughters dozens of the Massassi before Exar Kun manages to subdue it by focusing dark-side power through the Sith amulet. Peering into the depths of the amulet, Exar Kun beholds a vision of himself as the great and powerful Dark Lord of the Sith of Massassi legends. Empowered by the vision, Exar Kun turns on the spirit of Freedon Nadd, using the amulet to obliterate the dark spirit. As he vanishes, Nadd manages to send a warning across the galaxy to his other protégés: Satal Keto and Aleema of the Krath. Elsewhere, Ulic Qel-Droma formulates his own plans for infiltrating the Krath and bringing about their downfall. Completing his research at the great Jedi learning center on Ossus, Ulic bids farewell to his friends… and to Nomi Sunrider. Nomi, whose love for Ulic continues to grow, tells him she will come looking for him in a month. Ulic orders her to stay away, and they part on a note of discord. Arriving in the Tetan capital city of Cinnagar, Ulic poses as a fallen Jedi turned smuggler. During a public execution ceremony, a group of dissidents attempt to assassinate Satal Keto and Aleema. Seeing his opportunity, Ulic joins the battle, and saves Aleema’s life. Sensing Ulic’s power, Aleema welcomes him as a powerful ally. But her cousin Satal is not convinced of Ulic Qel-Droma’s intentions…
The Krath are tearing through the galaxy, laying claim to any inhabitable planets they come across, and they’re crushing anyone who stands in their way! But Ulic Qel-Droma isn’t just anyone; he’s a Jedi, perhaps the greatest of his time. Ulic poses as a fallen Jedi turned smuggler in an effort to infiltrate the Krath, figuring the best way to stop their tour of terror is from the inside.
Finally, in issue #6, “Jedi Assault”, Deep in the jungles of Yavin Four, the dark Jedi Exar Kun constructs Sith temples to serve as focus points of dark-side energies. Kun has found magician Naga Sadow’s ancient laboratory. Using Sadow’s lost alchemy, Kun transforms a living Massassi chief into a hideous monstrosity filled with destructive power. Elsewhere, the Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider travels to the Empress Teta system to contact Ulic Qel-Droma, who has succeeded in joining the Krath posing as a fallen Jedi. Nomi is captured and dragged before the Krath rulers Satal Keto and Aleema – and their new military commander, Ulic Qel-Droma. Rather than jeopardize his mission, Ulic makes a fateful decision under Satal’s urging: Ulic delivers the order for Nomi’s execution, and counts on her ability to save herself. Using her Jedi battle meditation, Nomi escapes captivity, and confronts Cay Qel-Droma and Tott Doneeta, who are waiting in orbit over the city. As the ”Nebulon Ranger” touches down outside the Krath fortress, the three young Jedi find themselves in a pitched lightsaber battle with Satal Keto and his men. Meanwhile, Ulic learns from Aleema that it was Satal Keto who unleashed the assassin droids that killed Master Arca on Deneba. Joining the battle, Ulic’s thirst for revenge is ignited by Sith poisons that Satal injected into his blood. Ulic kills Satal… and then turns on his Jedi friends with irrational fury. Under attack by Ulic and by ground troops, Nomi, Cay, and Tott are forced to abandon their friend and return to Ossus. Meanwhile, Exar Kun has also sensed Sith power at work in distant Cinnagar: “When I annihilated Freedon Nadd, I felt him contact others… they are a threat to my work. It is time to reach out to these other students of Freedon Nadd… and destroy them.”
In the final, climactic issue of this landmark series, two renegade Jedi, Ulic Qel-Droma and Exar Kun, clash in mortal combat. One will be awarded the title of Dark Lord of the Sith, the most feared and powerful force in the galaxy; the other may be awarded a shallow grave. The fate of the entire universe rests on the outcome!
